An outbreak of leptospirosis occurred during the rainy season in the city of Mumbai, India. Out of 169 suspected cases, 74 (43.7%) were determined serologically positive by microagglutination test (MAT) carried out with a battery of eight pathogenic serovars, while 78 (46.1%) were shown positive for IgM antibodies to leptospira by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. With the establishment of National Cancer Registry Programme, incidence rates per 100,000 are available from six metropolitan registries and one rural registry. A serological survey of brucellosis in cattle and buffalo was performed in 23 States of India. A total of 30,437 bovine samples, comprising 23,284 cattle and 7,153 buffalo (Bubalus bubalis), were screened. The screening initially used the rose bengal plate test: doubtful and positive samples were then titrated in the serum tube agglutination test. The overall prevalence rate of antibodies was 1.9% in cattle and 1.8% in buffalo. A survey was conducted in Sikkim to determine the prevalence of endemic cretinism in the state. A household was the basic sampling unit. Villages were selected randomly in the state and from these households were selected randomly using the electoral lists. All members of the households were studied. Total of 17,837 individuals from 3,197 households from 249 villages were studied. There were 8,953 males and 8,884 females. A total of 617 endemic cretins were identified: 316 males and 301 females. Over the last 10 years, 17 patients (13 males and 4 females) diagnosed as having classical polyarteritis nodosa (PAN) were treated and followed up in the rheumatology clinic of our institute. The median age and duration of symptoms at presentation were 29 years (range 13-59) and 9.5 months, respectively. Patients presented with the typical clinical picture of classical PAN. AIM: To identify the causes of childhood cataract in south India with emphasis on factors that might be potentially preventable.
METHODS: A total of 514 consecutive children with cataract attending an eye hospital outpatient clinic were examined and their parents interviewed by a trained interviewer using a standardised questionnaire in the local language.
