Insights Into Stroke Risk and Prediction for Underweight Individuals.

This review explores the relationship between underweight status and stroke risk and outcomes. Although the impact of obesity on stroke is well-documented, the harmful effects of being underweight are often overlooked. Drawing on evidence from observational studies, case-control studies, and meta-analyses, this review highlights that underweight individuals face increased mortality, poorer functional recovery, and higher rates of major adverse cardiovascular events and recurrent strokes post-stroke. Challenges in stroke prediction for this population are examined, including the limited researc

Understanding cognitive ageing: individuals, institutions, and inequalities.

Population ageing has drawn growing attention to cognitive ageing as a major public health and social policy issue. However, cognitive ageing is marked by substantial heterogeneity, reflecting not only biological and genetic processes but also the cumulative influence of social, economic, and institutional conditions across the life course. This editorial introduces a Special Issue that advances a social determinants perspective on cognitive ageing by integrating life-course, inequality, and contextual approaches across diverse geographical settings. Drawing on longitudinal surveys, administra

Revisiting the link alexithymia-depression in individuals with obesity.

Alexithymia is a psychological construct characterized by difficulty in recognizing and describing emotions. It has been linked to both obesity and depression. Our aim was to investigate the interplay between alexithymia and depressive symptoms in a sample of individuals with obesity. A sample of 275 adults with obesity (BMI ≥30 kg/m2) was randomly recruited from a nutrition clinic. Psychometric measures included Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and Toronto Alexithymia Scale -20 (TAS-20). The relationship between alexithymia and depressive mood was further confirmed using the structured clinica

Trip Detection Algorithms for Healthy and Amputee Individuals.

Amputation disrupts normal gait biomechanics, reducing strength, balance, and toe clearance. These factors contribute to an increase in falls in amputees, leading to both physical injury and psychological burden. Powered and microprocessor prosthetic legs can potentially react to external perturbations, but fast and reliable perturbation detection algorithms are needed. We developed three different algorithms for trip detection, each based on a different approach: thresholds, machine learning, or anomaly detection. Each trip detection method was validated offline with data acquired from 17 hea

Personalized Hemodialysis Approaches in Frail Older Individuals.

The hemodialysis population has progressively aged over the past two decades; in several settings, adults aged ≥75 years represent one of the fastest-growing populations receiving dialysis. Frailty, characterized by reduced physiological reserve and heightened vulnerability to stressors, has emerged as a critical determinant of outcomes and is commonly assessed using validated instruments such as the Fried Frailty Phenotype or the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS). Reported frailty prevalence in hemodialysis varies widely (approximately 20% to >80%), largely depending on the assessment instrument a

Distance judgement in individuals with vision and hearing loss.

Distance judgement is essential for safe navigation. People with vision loss (VL) increasingly rely on hearing for distance judgement. However, it is unclear how well auditory cues compensate for visual deficits, especially in those with additional hearing loss (dual sensory loss, DSL). This study evaluated the visual, auditory and audiovisual distance judgement in VL and DSL, by both verbally estimating and walking to remembered target locations. Fifty adults (16 controls, 19 VL, 15 DSL) estimated the distances of visual, auditory, and audiovisual targets across six distances (0.9-5.4 m) in a

The Impact of Insomnia on Dementia Risk in Hypertensive Individuals.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Hypertension is a vascular disorder that affects both the vascular system and neural tissue. Insomnia may further impair health and contribute to dementia development. This study examined the association between insomnia and dementia in individuals with hypertension using a retrospective cohort design. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Participants diagnosed with hypertension were classified into insomnia (n=97,751) and non-insomnia groups. Primary outcomes included Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and Parkinson's disease. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate adjus

[Individualized surgical treatment of benign prostate syndrome].

Benign prostate syndrome (BPS) encompasses various irritative and obstructive signs of micturition complaints. A frequent cause of BPS is benign prostatic obstruction (BPO). Due to the prevalence of the disease and the associated impairment of the quality of life guideline-based diagnostics and personalized selection of available treatment options are becoming increasingly more important in routine urological practice. The treatment decision is based on symptom severity, prostate volume, comorbidities and, last but not least, patient preference. A wide range of interventional treatment options

Inhibition in individuals with Williams syndrome and neurotypical children.

Individuals with Williams syndrome may experience challenges in executive function relative to neurotypical individuals, including inhibition. However, previous studies have reported conflicting findings on the extent of these differences. This may partially reflect a failure to account for the effects of working memory on inhibition task performance. This study, therefore, examined the extent of any differences in inhibition between individuals with Williams syndrome and neurotypical children, while investigating whether such differences are moderated by concurrent working memory load and ind

Biomechanical evaluation of individual 3D-printed vertebrae.

BACKGROUND: Personalized 3D-printed bone models are becoming increasingly popular in clinical care. Common applications include the visualization of idiopathic deformities or complex joint fractures. Functionalizing such printed replicas in terms of individual mechanical properties holds great potential for clinical training and research but is challenging due to the complexity of the bone structure. This study aims at developing a parametrizable structure as a substitute for spongious bone by simplifying 3D reconstruction and printing. METHODS: 43 vertebrae from 6 body donors aged 86.8 ± 7.8

Rehabilitation for individuals with post-tuberculosis lung disease.

Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a global clinical and public health threat, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. TB care has primarily been centred around timely diagnosis and expanding access to treatment. Post-TB lung disease (PTLD), characterised by persistent respiratory symptoms, functional impairment and structural lung changes, is highly prevalent among TB survivors, with a prevalence ranging from 40% to 90%. This requires an effort to evaluate TB survivors in need of further care at the end of anti-TB treatment, for consideration of pulmonary rehabilitation. This review

Insomnia Treatment Preferences and Barriers of Individuals With Arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep disturbances, including difficulty initiating sleep, maintaining sleep or early morning awakenings, are prevalent in arthritis, contributing to fatigue, pain, and reducing quality of life. Cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTi) is the first-line treatment. Accessibility remains challenging. Internet-delivered CBTi (ICBTi) increases accessibility. To tailor ICBTi to arthritis, a needs assessment survey was conducted. METHODS: Individuals with arthritis, recruited through social media and patient organizations, completed an online survey assessing insomnia, help-seeki

Neuroanatomy reflects individual variability in impulsivity in youth.

Individual differences in neural circuits underlying emotional regulation, motivation, and decision-making are implicated in many psychiatric illnesses. Interindividual variability in these circuits may manifest, at least in part, as individual differences in impulsivity. Impulsivity reflects a tendency towards rapid, unplanned reactions to internal or external stimuli without considering potential negative consequences, coupled with difficulty inhibiting responses. Here, we use multivariate machine learning approaches (brain-based predictive models) to explore the neural bases of impulsivity.

Dyslipidemia management in stroke prevention: An individualized approach.

Dyslipidemia remains a major, modifiable determinant of global stroke burden, accounting for more than one-fifth of ischemic strokes (IS) worldwide. Recent evidence has shifted emphasis from conventional lipid fractions to apolipoprotein B (ApoB)-containing lipoproteins, including lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], which more accurately reflect atherogenic particle burden than low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) alone and are increasingly used for stroke risk stratification. While the principle "the faster and the lower, the better" underpins dyslipidemia management, evidence-based, subtype-speci
