Distance judgement in individuals with vision and hearing loss.

Distance judgement is essential for safe navigation. People with vision loss (VL) increasingly rely on hearing for distance judgement. However, it is unclear how well auditory cues compensate for visual deficits, especially in those with additional hearing loss (dual sensory loss, DSL). This study evaluated the visual, auditory and audiovisual distance judgement in VL and DSL, by both verbally estimating and walking to remembered target locations. Fifty adults (16 controls, 19 VL, 15 DSL) estimated the distances of visual, auditory, and audiovisual targets across six distances (0.9-5.4 m) in a

Universalism and individuality as a structural tension in modern medicine.

This paper examines the structural tension between universalism and individuality in modern medicine. By universalism, I refer to the epistemological commitment to producing general, abstract knowledge about health and disease through classifications, generalizable models of physiological process, statistical evidence, and standardized therapeutic protocols. By individuality, I refer to the biological uniqueness of each patient as a concrete organism possessing a singular configuration of traits and circumstances. The central argument is that modern medicine has historically depended on univer

The Impact of Insomnia on Dementia Risk in Hypertensive Individuals.

BACKGROUND/AIM: Hypertension is a vascular disorder that affects both the vascular system and neural tissue. Insomnia may further impair health and contribute to dementia development. This study examined the association between insomnia and dementia in individuals with hypertension using a retrospective cohort design. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Participants diagnosed with hypertension were classified into insomnia (n=97,751) and non-insomnia groups. Primary outcomes included Alzheimer's disease, vascular dementia, and Parkinson's disease. Cox proportional hazards models were used to estimate adjus

[Individualized surgical treatment of benign prostate syndrome].

Benign prostate syndrome (BPS) encompasses various irritative and obstructive signs of micturition complaints. A frequent cause of BPS is benign prostatic obstruction (BPO). Due to the prevalence of the disease and the associated impairment of the quality of life guideline-based diagnostics and personalized selection of available treatment options are becoming increasingly more important in routine urological practice. The treatment decision is based on symptom severity, prostate volume, comorbidities and, last but not least, patient preference. A wide range of interventional treatment options

Inhibition in individuals with Williams syndrome and neurotypical children.

Individuals with Williams syndrome may experience challenges in executive function relative to neurotypical individuals, including inhibition. However, previous studies have reported conflicting findings on the extent of these differences. This may partially reflect a failure to account for the effects of working memory on inhibition task performance. This study, therefore, examined the extent of any differences in inhibition between individuals with Williams syndrome and neurotypical children, while investigating whether such differences are moderated by concurrent working memory load and ind

Sleep profiles in individuals with rare neurogenetic syndromes.

AIM: To characterize sleep profiles in individuals with neurogenetic disorders (NGDs) and examine the contribution of key clinical and psychiatric symptoms to these profiles. METHOD: The parents of 248 individuals (aged 3-45 years) diagnosed with a range of NGDs, including PTEN hamartoma tumor syndrome (n = 111), SYNGAP1-related intellectual disability (n = 46), Malan syndrome (NFIX; n = 22), and other NGDs (n = 69; e.g. pathogenic variants in ADNP, CSNK2A1, GRIN2B, and STXB1) participated in this cross-sectional caregiver-report study. Parents completed the Neurobehavioral Evaluation Tool ab

Biomechanical evaluation of individual 3D-printed vertebrae.

BACKGROUND: Personalized 3D-printed bone models are becoming increasingly popular in clinical care. Common applications include the visualization of idiopathic deformities or complex joint fractures. Functionalizing such printed replicas in terms of individual mechanical properties holds great potential for clinical training and research but is challenging due to the complexity of the bone structure. This study aims at developing a parametrizable structure as a substitute for spongious bone by simplifying 3D reconstruction and printing. METHODS: 43 vertebrae from 6 body donors aged 86.8 ± 7.8

Rehabilitation for individuals with post-tuberculosis lung disease.

Tuberculosis (TB) continues to be a global clinical and public health threat, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. TB care has primarily been centred around timely diagnosis and expanding access to treatment. Post-TB lung disease (PTLD), characterised by persistent respiratory symptoms, functional impairment and structural lung changes, is highly prevalent among TB survivors, with a prevalence ranging from 40% to 90%. This requires an effort to evaluate TB survivors in need of further care at the end of anti-TB treatment, for consideration of pulmonary rehabilitation. This review

Insomnia Treatment Preferences and Barriers of Individuals With Arthritis.

OBJECTIVE: Sleep disturbances, including difficulty initiating sleep, maintaining sleep or early morning awakenings, are prevalent in arthritis, contributing to fatigue, pain, and reducing quality of life. Cognitive-behavioral therapy for insomnia (CBTi) is the first-line treatment. Accessibility remains challenging. Internet-delivered CBTi (ICBTi) increases accessibility. To tailor ICBTi to arthritis, a needs assessment survey was conducted. METHODS: Individuals with arthritis, recruited through social media and patient organizations, completed an online survey assessing insomnia, help-seeki

Neuroanatomy reflects individual variability in impulsivity in youth.

Individual differences in neural circuits underlying emotional regulation, motivation, and decision-making are implicated in many psychiatric illnesses. Interindividual variability in these circuits may manifest, at least in part, as individual differences in impulsivity. Impulsivity reflects a tendency towards rapid, unplanned reactions to internal or external stimuli without considering potential negative consequences, coupled with difficulty inhibiting responses. Here, we use multivariate machine learning approaches (brain-based predictive models) to explore the neural bases of impulsivity.

Dyslipidemia management in stroke prevention: An individualized approach.

Dyslipidemia remains a major, modifiable determinant of global stroke burden, accounting for more than one-fifth of ischemic strokes (IS) worldwide. Recent evidence has shifted emphasis from conventional lipid fractions to apolipoprotein B (ApoB)-containing lipoproteins, including lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)], which more accurately reflect atherogenic particle burden than low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) alone and are increasingly used for stroke risk stratification. While the principle "the faster and the lower, the better" underpins dyslipidemia management, evidence-based, subtype-speci

Individual dynamics in stress-related pain responses.

BACKGROUND: Stress and pain are adaptive, bidirectionally related systems, modulated by shared factors. However, how stress reactivity relates to individual differences in pain-related distress and pain sensitivity remains unclear. This preregistered study therefore investigates how physiological reactivity to acute stress relates to trait pain-related distress and stress-induced changes in pain sensitivity, and whether pain-related distress acts as moderator. METHODS: Trait pain-related distress was assessed in 148 healthy males using questionnaires. Baseline blood pressure, pulse rate, alph

Evaluation of Endothelial Responses in Individuals With Primary Hyperparathyroidism.

Primary hyperparathyroidism is a prevalent endocrine disorder marked by excessive parathyroid hormone secretion. Beyond its classical biochemical features, accumulating evidence suggests that primary hyperparathyroidism may adversely affect cardiovascular homeostasis. In this context, we aimed to evaluate whether patients with primary hyperparathyroidism exhibit impaired vascular function and heightened systemic inflammation compared with matched healthy controls. This cross-sectional study initially recruited 39 patients with primary hyperparathyroidism. After predefined exclusion criteria we

The Effects of Individualized Arousal on Recognition Memory of Words.

Emotional information often modulates recognition memory, but the relative roles of arousal and valence remain debated, partly because many studies rely on normative emotion categories rather than individualized affective experience. This study examined whether post-test individualized arousal and valence ratings were associated with recognition-confidence responses to emotional Chinese words and whether the learning task influenced later recognition. Forty participants studied neutral, positive, and negative words under semantic-judgment and recognition-judgment learning conditions. After a 2

Multidimensional assessment of interoception in blind and deaf individuals.

Previous studies have documented compensatory interactions across different sensory modalities, including cross-modal compensation between external senses such as visual-auditory and visual-tactile systems. However, whether such compensatory effects extend to the interaction between exteroception and interoception in hearing loss remains unclear, as prior evidence has been largely limited to visual deprivation. Interoception is the ability to perceive, understand, and respond to internal bodily signals. To investigate the potential for cross-modal compensation between interoception and exteroc

Menopausal Considerations in Transgender and Gender-Diverse Individuals.

Assessing and treating menopause in transgender and gender diverse (TGD) individuals is of increasing interest to clinicians providing gender-affirming care. There currently exists a small body of literature that describes cardiovascular, bone health, neurocognitive, and other outcomes in the TGD population who experience loss of endogenous sex hormone production, whether through gender-affirming hormone therapy, surgical gonadectomy, or natural aging. However, the literature is currently insufficient to provide clear evidence-based guidance for the medical management of menopause in TGD indiv

A Model for Implementing Psychotherapy for Individuals With Cognitive Impairments.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and Alzheimer's disease and Alzheimer's disease-related dementias (AD/ADRD) are at greater risk for mental health concerns than those without cognitive impairments. We report the implementation of psychological services for patients with MCI and mild AD/ADRD within a large public health-care system in the United States. METHODS: Preimplementation process included identifying a clinic champion. Referrals were initially provided by the clinic champion and then opened to the entire Memory Assessment Clinic with predetermined eligibilit
