Higher prenatal dietary glycemic index in the third trimester of pregnancy is associated with infant negative affect at 6 months.

The dietary glycemic index (GI) reflects post-prandial plasma glucose generation rate, with higher-GI foods rapidly increasing blood sugar. Prenatal consumption of high-GI foods is associated with offspring risk for obesity and metabolic disorders. The impact of prenatal dietary GI exposure on infant neurodevelopment remains unclear. Maternal dietary intake, percent adiposity, and insulin resistance were prospectively assessed during the second and third trimesters in a sample of women with healthy, singleton pregnancies (N = 302). Infant negative affect was prospectively assessed at six month

Gastrointestinal allergy to food: a review.

Gastrointestinal food allergy still poses a challenge to the clinician because of its variable symptomatology and lack of reliable diagnostic tests. Its prevalence is estimated at 2 approximately 5%, higher in children than in older age-groups. Allergy to food usually diminishes with advancing age. Although a wide variety of foods can cause allergic reactions, cow's milk is the most common cause of food allergy in infants and young children. Depending upon the speed of onset of symptoms, immediate and delayed types of food allergy have been described. Gastrointestinal symptoms in food allergy

Parent feeding practices in infants and toddlers referred to a hospital-based feeding program in the United States.

While considerable research exists on parent feeding practices for infants and toddlers, past research has not focused on children with feeding problems. The goal of this study was to identify parent feeding practices in a sample of infants (n = 178) and toddlers (n = 221) referred to a hospital-based feeding clinic and then examine how these parent feeding practices were correlated with specific feeding problems. Parents completed surveys to report child demographics, feeding problems, and use of 54 feeding practices. Forty-eight (88.8%) of 54 practices were utilized more often for toddlers t

Egg Allergy Prevalence Before and After Guidelines for Earlier Egg Introduction.

IMPORTANCE: Egg allergy is among the most common food allergies in infants. Allergy prevention guidelines have been updated globally based on evidence that earlier egg introduction reduces the risk of egg allergy, and these guidelines have been adopted widely. However, the association of this guideline change with the prevalence of egg allergy is unclear. OBJECTIVE: To estimate the change in population prevalence of egg allergy after a guideline update recommending earlier introduction of egg into the infant diet. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This cross-sectional study included infants

[Significance of hypo-osmolar diets for oral nutrition build-up in very severe malabsorption--clinical observations exemplified by infants with subtotal small intestine resection].

Regenerative and adaptive processes of the gut are apparently analogous to the absorption rate in small bowel diseases. These processes can be enhanced by the prolongation of passage time which, in turn, is influenced by the osmolality of the formula diet. Since infants who have undergone a subtotal bowel resection, like other children with serious diseases of the small bowel, are extraordinarily sensitive to hyperosmolar food, any preparation with special indications should be balanced and rendered hypoosmolar in full caloric concentration. Such formulas may well facilitate food supply to inf

What are pharmacists recommending for infant teething treatment?

OBJECTIVES: In 2011, the Food and Drug Administration issued a warning to avoid the use of any benzocaine-containing products for infant teething treatment owing to a risk of methemoglobinemia. Several benzocaine-containing products targeted for infant teething are currently available over the counter. Pharmacists are commonly asked for medical advice in the community, and there is no current literature evaluating what pharmacists are recommending for infant teething. The objectives of this study were to evaluate what pharmacists are currently recommending for infant teething treatment and ass

Global occurrence of infant botulism, 1976-2006.

OBJECTIVE: To summarize the worldwide occurrence of reported infant (intestinal toxemia) botulism cases since first recognition of the disease in 1976. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We collected information on infant botulism cases by active and passive surveillance, by provision of therapeutic Human Botulism Immune Globulin to suspected cases, and by searching the medical literature. We defined a case as laboratory-confirmed botulism that occurred in an infant <or=12 months of age that was not caused by the ingestion of botulinum toxin in food. RESULTS: Twenty-six countries representing 5 continent

[Toxigenicity of microorganisms isolated from dry products for infant and dietetic nutrition].

The authors describe the results of studying the dissemination with Bac. cereus cells and staphylococci of raw material, components and ready-made products for infants' and dietetic nutrition after varying times of storage under the conditions of uncontrolled humidity and temperature. It has been demonstrated that Bac. cereus and staphylococcal strains isolated are potentially enterotoxigenic. Prevention of food poisoning with the microorganisms in question should be aimed at the improvement of industrial sanitary and hygienic conditions.

A case of severe allergic reaction to cooked potato.

UNLABELLED: White potato is a very common ingredient in the diet of infants in Mediterranean countries, and in its cooked form, it is one of the first solid foods introduced, usually around the age of 4-6 months. Allergy to potato is uncommon, and allergic reactions to cooked potato have been reported only in children. We report a case of severe potato-induced allergic reaction in an 8-month-old infant with atopic dermatitis and multiple food allergies that raises questions about differential diagnosis between anaphylaxis and food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES). CONCLUSION: Al

Nutrition education and infant growth in rural Indian infants: narrowing the gender gap?

Growth faltering and malnutrition are highly prevalent in most South Asian countries. Among the serious consequences of malnutrition are increased risks of morbidity and mortality in children as well as deficits in physical stature and lowered cognitive measures. Childhood malnutrition in poor households has been well documented in India, with the highest rates observed in those aged 12-23 months. Countrywide National Family Health Survey II (NFHS II) data show mean underweight prevalence increases from 11.9% among infants under six months of age to 58.4% at 12-23 months of age. This paper dis

Early-life dietary patterns and the risk of juvenile-onset ankylosing spondylitis: a nationwide cohort study in South Korea.

OBJECTIVES: Emerging evidence suggests that early-life exposures may influence the development of inflammatory joint diseases. This study investigated the association between early-life exposures and the incidence of juvenile-onset ankylosing spondylitis (JAS) in a nationwide South Korean cohort. METHODS: This study included 1 242 257 infants from the South Korean National Health Insurance Service. The association between early-life exposures-such as food diversity, frequency of solid food intake, antibiotic use, and breastfeeding status-and the development of JAS, was examined. Food diversit

Interactions between food antigens and the immune system in the pathogenesis of gastrointestinal diseases.

This review details the evidence that interactions between food antigens and the immune system may play a role in the pathogenesis of several gastrointestinal diseases. In immediate hypersensitivity reactions to foods involving the gastrointestinal system, in milk-induced gastrointestinal disease in infants and children, and in some forms of hypereosinophilic gastroenteritis, the evidence for the participation of food antigens is extensive. Gluten-induced enteropathy and some forms of dermatitis herpetiformis are also induced by defined food proteins where the response is specific and characte

Vitamin C in breast milk may reduce the risk of atopy in the infant.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effects of maternal dietary and supplement intake of vitamins C and E on breast milk antioxidant composition (vitamin C, alpha-tocopherol and beta-carotene) and their protective potential against the development of atopy in the infant. DESIGN, SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Mothers with atopic disease were recruited at the end of gestation and maternal sensitization was assessed by skin-prick testing. The 4-day food records of the mothers and breast milk samples were collected at the infants' age of 1 month. Infants' atopy was defined by the presence of atopic dermatitis durin

Maternal Fiber Dietary Intakes during Pregnancy and Infant Allergic Disease.

Maternal diet during pregnancy plays a likely role in infant immune development through both direct nutrient specific immunomodulatory effects and by modulating the composition and metabolic activity of the maternal gut microbiome. Dietary fibers, as major substrates for microbial fermentation, are of interest in this context. This is the first study to examine maternal intakes of different fiber sub-types and subsequent infant allergic disease. In an observational study of 639 mother-infant pairs (all infants had a family history of allergic disease) we examined maternal intakes of total fibe

Nutrition management of congenital glucose-galactose malabsorption: a case study.

In this article we describe the clinical history, diagnostic evaluation, and management of an infant who had congenital glucose-galactose malabsorption (CGGM)--a rare disorder thought to be inherited as an autosomal recessive trait. Because of defective sodium-coupled cotransport of glucose and galactose in the intestinal mucosa, infants with CGGM suffer from chronic, profuse, watery diarrhea that often leads to hypertonic dehydration. This infant experienced persistent diarrhea and hypernatremic dehydration during the first 3 months of life. Despite management with elemental formulas and cont

Complementary Feeding in the Clinical Practice: An Exploratory Survey among Italian Primary Care Pediatricians.

Introduction: Complementary feeding (CF) is the process of introducing solid or liquid foods (complementary foods, CFs) other than human breast milk (HBM) or infant formula into infants' diet when HBM or infant formula is no longer sufficient to meet infants' nutritional needs. Primary care pediatricians (PCPs) are paramount in guiding and educating infants' families during CF. Materials and Methods: Our exploratory survey aimed to investigate PCPs' current clinical approach to managing CF. From 1 March 2024 to 30 April 2024, a digital questionnaire composed of 32 multiple-choice questions inv

Egg allergy: an update.

Egg allergy is the commonest infant food allergy both in Australia and world-wide. The clinical presentation of egg allergy is varied - egg is involved in both IgE and non-IgE-mediated allergic reactions and has been implicated in conditions such as anaphylaxis, food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome, atopic dermatitis and eosinophilic oesophagitis. The clinical presentation, pathophysiology and diagnosis as well as the natural history and management of egg allergy will be discussed. Current theories about primary prevention as well as potential future therapies are presented. Finally, pr…

Neonatal BCG Vaccination for Prevention of Allergy in Infants: The MIS BAIR Randomised Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: The beneficial off-target effects of Bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccination potentially include protection against allergy. OBJECTIVE: In the MIS BAIR trial, we aimed to determine whether neonatal BCG vaccination reduces atopic sensitisation and clinical food allergy in infants. METHODS: In this randomised controlled trial, 1272 neonates were allocated to BCG-Denmark vaccine (0.05 mL intradermal dose) or no BCG at birth. Randomisation was stratified by recruitment site, mode of delivery and plurality of birth. The primary outcome was the incidence of atopic sensitisation deter
