Differences in infant feeding practices between Chinese-born and Australian-born mothers living in Australia: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Chinese immigrants are the third largest immigrant group in Australia. Recent qualitative evidence from Victorian Maternal and Child Health nurses indicate that infants of Chinese parents commonly have rapid growth trajectories and that high value is placed on rapid growth and having a fatter child; with low breastfeeding rates and overfeeding of infant formula. The aim of this study was to compare infant feeding practices (breastfeeding, infant formula, other liquids, solids) of Chinese-born and Australian-born mothers living in Australia. METHODS: Using the Australian National I…

Design and preparation of market baskets of European Union commercial baby foods for the assessment of infant exposure to food chemicals and to their effects.

The assessment of acute and chronic dietary exposure to contaminants in baby foods is needed to ensure healthy infant growth. Monthly European Union market baskets of commercial baby foods were designed for the first 9 months of life by the 'babyfood' study group of the CASCADE Network of Excellence for the specific purpose of assessing exposure to potentially toxic substances in infants fed with such foods. The present paper reports the different steps that led to the preparation of monthly pooled samples of commercial baby foods ('Infant formulae and follow-on formulae' and 'Other baby foods…

Formula Feeding Is Associated with Rapid Weight Gain between 6 and 12 Months of Age: Highlighting the Importance of Developing Specific Recommendations to Prevent Overfeeding.

We examined differences in mean daily calorie intake and rapid weight gain risk among 6- to 12-month-old infants by milk feeding status: breastmilk only, breastmilk and formula (combined), or formula only. Another objective was to determine what frequency and amount of formula fed were associated with overfeeding among infants. Mother-infant dyads (n = 240) were recruited from a pediatric clinic mainly serving Medicaid recipients. At 6, 9, and 12 months of infants' age, 24 h feeding recalls were conducted using the multiple-pass method. Infant weight measurements were accessed from clinic reco

My 40-Year History with Cronobacter/Enterobacter sakazakii - Lessons Learned, Myths Debunked, and Recommendations.

Much has been learned about organism in the Cronobacter/Enterobacter sakazakii complex since I first named and described Enterobacter sakazakii in 1980. However, there are still wide knowledge gaps. One of the most serious is that are still many uncertainties associated with assessing the public health risk posed by these bacteria, particularly in neonatal meningitis. Over the last few decades, Cronobacter contamination of commercial powdered infant formula products has apparently been reduced, but it is still an ongoing problem. The powdered infant formula industry still cannot produce powder…

Cronobacter species isolation in two infants - New Mexico, 2008.

Cronobacter spp. (formerly Enterobacter sakazakii) are rare causes of infant septicemia and meningitis, resulting in death in approximately 40% of cases. Since 1958, 120 cases of Cronobacter infection in infants have been reported, an average of fewer than three cases per year worldwide. Powdered infant formula (PIF), which is not sterile, has been implicated repeatedly as a vehicle of Cronobacter infection; consequently, the World Health Organization (WHO) has issued guidelines for safer preparation, handling, and storage of PIF. This report describes isolation of Cronobacter spp. in two nonh…

Prevention and Management of Cow's Milk Allergy in Non-Exclusively Breastfed Infants.

Introduction: The prevention and management of cow milk allergy (CMA) is still debated. Since CMA is much less frequent in breastfed infants … rmatitis. There are pros and cons to consider partially hydrolysed protein as an option for starter infant formula for each non-exclusively breastfed infant. A challenge test is still recommended as the most specific and sensitive diagnostic test, although a positive challenge test does not proof that the immune system is involved. The Cow Milk Symptom Score (Co …

Parental Reports on Early Autism Behaviors in Their Children with Fragile X Syndrome as a Function of Infant Feeding.

This study evaluates the prevalence of autistic behaviors in fragile X syndrome as a function of infant diet. Retrospective survey data from the Fragile X Syndrome Nutrition Study, which included data on infant feeding and caregiver-reported developmental milestones for 190 children with fragile X syndrome enrolled in the Fragile X Online Registry with Accessible Database (FORWARD), were analyzed. Exploratory, sex-specific associations were found linking the use of soy-based infant formula with worse autistic behaviors related to language in females and self-injurious behavior in males. These …

Neonatal circumcision: when can infants reliably be expected to void?

OBJECTIVE: Analysis of factors influencing voiding after neonatal circumcision. DESIGN: Prospective study of the following factors in 200 circumcised infants: birth weight, gestational and postnatal age, type and timing of feeding before the procedure, and timing of last voiding before circumcision. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in the age when circumcision was performed between breastfed infants (6 and 60 hours) and in those formula-fed (8 and 130 hours). All infants voided after circumcision, with 75% of breastfed infants and 100% of formula-fed infants voiding within 8 hour

Comparing barriers to breastfeeding success in the first month for non-overweight and overweight women.

BACKGROUND: Women who enter pregnancy overweight or obese tend to have poorer breastfeeding outcomes compared to non-overweight women. Women's experiences of specific breastfeeding-related problems and reasons for use of formula have not been systematically investigated according to pre-pregnancy BMI. The aim of this study was to compare self-reported breastfeeding problems in non-overweight and overweight women and identify the main reasons for use of infant formula during the first month postpartum. METHODS: The present study involved a cross-sectional secondary analysis of data collected a…

Maternal Adverse Childhood Experiences and Delayed Initiation of Complementary Foods: A Nationwide Online Cohort Study.

Background/Objectives: Infant feeding is critical for health and development, yet the influence of maternal psychosocial factors on its timing is not fully understood. While maternal adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) are known to affect perinatal outcomes, their impact on the specific timing of initiating formula and complementary foods remains under-investigated. We hypothesized that maternal ACEs are associated with delayed initiation of infant formula and complementary foods and that this association is mediated by postpartum depression (PPD). This study aimed to examine the link between…

Randomised trial of nutrition for preterm infants after discharge.

In a randomised double blind trial, the effect on growth and clinical status of a nutrient enriched 'post-discharge' milk formula versus a standard term formula, was compared in 32 exclusively bottle fed preterm infants. The formulas were used as the sole milk intake up to a postnatal age of 9 months. Significant increases in linear growth and weight gain were observed in the infants who received the enriched diet. There were no differences in vomiting, posseting, or bowel habit between the groups. Formula volumes ingested were similar between diet groups, indicating that the difference in for

Association Between Infant Feeding Modes and Gastroesophageal Reflux: A Repeated Measurement Analysis of the Infant Feeding Practices Study II.

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux in neonates is frequently reported by parents, potentially motivating changes in infant feeding mode and/or addition of solid food. OBJECTIVE: The authors prospectively analyzed associations between repeated measurement of feeding modes and reflux in infancy. METHODS: The Infant Feeding Practices Study II, conducted between 2005 and 2007 (2,841 infants), provides data on reflux and feeding modes at nine time points from months 1 to 12. Feeding modes were defined based on direct breastfeeding, feeding of bottled human milk, formula feeding, their combinatio

Inhibition of beta-glucuronidase by casein hydrolysate formula.

BACKGROUND: A casein hydrolysate infant formula has been shown to be associated with lower levels of neonatal jaundice than are standard infant formulas. Because beta-glucuronidase is related to neonatal jaundice, this study examined the effect of a casein hydrolysate formula on beta-glucuronidase. METHODS: Beta-glucuronidase activity was measured with or without added dietary components. The beta-glucuronidase sources used were meconium, breast milk, and the purified bovine liver enzyme. The dietary components assayed for their effect on beta-glucuronidase activity included casein hydrolysat…

It was evaluated the nutritional recovery of infants with marasmus using two different formulas: formula "X", soy based formula enriched con L-methionine; formula "Y" modified milk based formula; both, added with corn syrup at 10%. Seventeen infants were fed formula "X" and seventeen infants received formula "Y". The calorie and water intake were similar in both groups (p greater than 0.05). The protein intake was higher with formula "X" (p less than 0.05). After four weeks of study weight, height, triceps and sub-scapular skinfold, weight/age, height/age and weight/height did not showed signi

Premature thelarche in an infant girl with failure to thrive related to dietary soy exposure.

A 7-month-old female infant presented with failure to thrive. She was breastfed till 3 months of age, thereafter switched to soy-based milk formula. There was no history to suggest excess energy losses, recurrent infections or chronic diarrhoea. Three months after switching to exclusive soy-based milk formula, parents noticed significant enlargement of both breasts. Clinical examination was unremarkable except for enlargement of both breasts. None of the other secondary sexual characteristics were present. Initial blood investigations showed hyponatraemic hypokalaemic hypochloraemic metabolic

LGBTQ+ Parents and Infant Feeding: An Analysis of the Household Pulse Survey Dataset.

PURPOSE: Human milk is the optimal food for newborns; however, infant feeding practices of parents who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans, queer, or sexual and gender minorities (LGBTQ+) are largely unknown. The purpose of this study was to describe infant feeding practices in LGBTQ+ families and compare to heterosexual or cisgender families. METHODS: Secondary analyses of parents with an infant less than 12 months from the Household Pulse Survey (April-July 2024) were conducted. Demographic characteristics to include sexual orientation and gender identification were extracted. Infant feeding

Chronic diarrhea and soy formulas. Inhibition of diarrhea by lactose.

Soy protein formulas are often poorly tolerated by infants with chronic nonspecific or postinfectious diarrhea syndrome. We found that these adverse responses may be prevented by using lactose, instead of sucrose or dextrimaltose, in soy formula. We studied 40 infants diagnosed as soy intolerant. They were given soy formula with differing carbohydrate contents in a randomized, blinded prospective study. Stool output, stool sodium content, and symptoms were significantly improved in infants receiving a soy-lactose formula; no difference was seen in formulas with sucrose or maltose. Improvement

Plasma selenium in preterm and term infants during the first 12 months of life.

The goal of the present study was to prospectively assess the plasma selenium (Se) concentrations of term and preterm infants during the fir … at least 6 months. The levels were lower than those of term infants fed an identical unsupplemented infant formula during the first 4 months of life. These data support routine monitoring in hospital and selenium supplementation of preterm infants, preferably in hospital before discharge.

Challenges of matching human milk fatty acid patterns technically and functionally.

A vegetable oil fat blend resulting in formula major fatty acid levels similar to human milk is appropriate for infant feedings even though the palmitic acid may have a somewhat different positional distribution. Growth, bone mineral content, and visual acuity (as measured by the Teller acuity card procedure) achieved in normal infants consuming such formulas are at least as good as those from human milk. The quantitatively minor LC-PUFA levels may also be important in infant development and useful once safety of their sources has been adequately demonstrated. Such formula fat blends mimicking

Iron nutrition in the breast-fed infant.

Breast-fed infants were compared with infants fed a prepared formula not fortified with iron during the first nine months of life. Despite efforts to provide equal iron intakes from cereal and other foods, the breast-fed infants ate less iron-containing foods than the formula-fed infants. The incidence of mild anemia and biochemical iron deficiency was the same in both groups. The breast-fed infants had a significantly lower total iron binding capacity. Breast-fed infants appear to utilize iron more efficiently than formula-fed infants.
