Understanding physicians' intention to use a simple infection control measure: wearing gloves.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to identify the factors that explain the intention of physicians to wear gloves when contact with blood or body fluids was possible. METHODS: A survey was given to a representative sample of physicians (general practitioners, medical specialist, and surgeons of the Canadian province of Québec). A total of 720 physicians completed the self-administered questionnaire. The respondents' intention to wear gloves, psychosocial variables (attitude, perceived social norm, perceived behavioral control, perceived risk of infection, and habit of wearing gloves), and

The role of hospital infection control in the quality system of hospitals.

Like other highly specialized fields, quality systems have their own vocabulary which we must be familiar with; it has been internationally standardized. This standard should be adhered to in order to avoid unnecessary ambiguities and confusion, and to facilitate exchange of information between disciplines. We, in the infection control field, are quality pioneers in hospitals. We have, within our discipline, created quality systems and practised quality surveillance for decades. This must be recognized. Medical quality audits intended for comparisons between hospitals, services and wards requi…

[Postoperative infection control in patients with hepatic, biliary tract, and pancreatic cancers].

Postoperative infection occurs more frequently in patients with malignant disease than in patients with benign disease. Postoperative infection control in patients with hepatic cancer, biliary tract cancer and pancreatic cancer is studied. Although in patients with jaundice due to malignancy the rate of positive bacterial culture of the bile collected at the time of PTCD was low, the rate of positive bile culture increased after 10 to 14 days of PTCD. The predominant strain was Enterococcus spp., followed by Klebsiella spp., Enterobacter spp. and E. coli in that order. These bacteria isolated …

Control of Leptospira hardjo infection in beef cattle by whole-herd vaccination.

A whole-herd vaccination programme to control Leptospira hardjo infection was applied to a closed herd of approximately 800 beef cattle on the island of Luing in Scotland. An experimental vaccine was produced and the herd was vaccinated annually for five years. Progress was monitored by means of a catalytic model using data for age-specific serological prevalences and geometric mean titres. Any cattle introduced to the herd were subject to antibiotic treatment and quarantine, and at the end of the trial the whole herd was treated prophylactically with antibiotics to minimise the risk of residu

The enhancement of infection control in-service education by ward opinion leaders.

Opinion leaders are members within a social group with significant social influence over others. A guideline on urinary catheter care was introduced in three groups (A, B, and C) of two randomly allocated wards. Two opinion leaders per ward were identified by nurses in groups A and B with the use of a sociometric method. For education, in-service lectures for 30% of nurses and opinion leaders' tutorials for all nurses were used in group A; opinion leaders' tutorials alone in B, and lectures alone in C. Before and after the education program, the guideline's frequency of practice was assessed b

Evaluating the efficacy of the infection control liaison nurse in the hospital.

The infection control liaison nurse (ICLN) is a nurse in the ward, appointed to participate in education for infection control, and to liaise between the ward and the infection control nurse (ICN). The efficacy of ICLNs was evaluated when a guideline on urinary catheter care was introduced in a 1000-bed hospital in Hong Kong. The 27 public wards were divided randomly into a test (24 wards) and control group (three wards), and ICLNs were appointed in the test group by the nursing administration. For education, the ICN conducted in-service lectures for both groups, while in the test group, the I…

Infection prevention and control in the era of the AIDS/HIV epidemic.

The chronology of important events in the AIDS/HIV epidemic is presented in Table 2. Nurses are the largest group of health care workers and persons who provide direct care and handle sharp objects regularly. As the number of persons infected with HIV increases and as more infected persons become ill enough to require care, the opportunity for an individual nurse to have contact with an infected person will increase. Because many persons with HIV infection also have Kaposi's sarcoma and other malignancies, some oncology nurses may have more contact with HIV-infected individuals than nurses in

Histocompatibility-linked genetic control of disease susceptibility. Murine lymphocytic choriomeningitis virus infection.

Acute necrotizing inflammatory disease after intracerebral injection of LCM virus is largely dependent on the host immune response to the virus and is controlled, in part, by a dominant gene which is closely linked to the H-2 locus. The F(1) hybrid (H-2(q/k)) from mating a susceptible SWR/J mouse (H-2(q/q)) to a resistant C3H/HeJ mouse (H-2(k/k)) is susceptible to LCM virus disease. When such hybrids (H-2(q/k)) are backcrossed to susceptible parents (H-2(q/q)), all F(2) offspring (H-2(q/q), H-2(q/k)) are highly susceptible. In contrast, hybrid (H-2(q/k)) backcross to resistant parents (H-2(k/k

Efficient control of Plasmodium yoelii infection in BALB/c and C57BL/6 mice with pre-existing Strongyloides ratti infection.

About 225 million malaria cases have been reported worldwide in 2009, and one-third of the world's population is infected with parasitic helminths. As helminths and Plasmodium are co-endemic, concurrent infections frequently occur. Helminths have been shown to modulate the host's immune response; therefore, pre-existing helminth infections may interfere with the efficient immune response to Plasmodium. To study the interaction between helminths and Plasmodium, we established a murine model of co-infection using the gastrointestinal nematode Strongyloides ratti and Plasmodium yoelii. We show th

Deliberate infection in research: ethical perspective of controlled human infection studies.

A controlled human infection study is the deliberate exposure of a healthy volunteer to an infectious pathogen under a strict controlled environment. Although there has been noticeable contribution of such studies to the biomedical research involving understanding of disease pathogen interaction, vaccine development, etc, they are in direct contradiction of core ethical principles such as non-maleficence. The major ethical dilemma lies in the deliberate exposure without certain direct benefits. This narrative review discusses the ethical challenges and need for robust ethical framework taking

The epidemiological implications of a multiple-infection approach to the control of human helminth infections.

It has been suggested that there is economic advantage in using a single community therapy programme to deliver multiple treatments against several parasitic infections. This preliminary study estimates the occurrence of concurrent helminth infection in Africa and Brazil to determine whether such an approach is justified epidemiologically. The results indicate that the occurrence of geohelminthiasis with schistosomiasis is sufficiently frequent in some areas of both Africa and Brazil for a combined approach to control to be appropriate, but that the relatively low frequency of occurrence of on

Evaluation of infection control parameters according to the 1994 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention Tuberculosis guidelines: a 2-year experience.

BACKGROUND: Because of classification as a high-risk institution for potential Mycobacterium tuberculosis exposure and an employee purified protein derivative conversion rate of 2.7%, a large university-affiliated county hospital enhanced administrative and engineering controls, as recommended by its tuberculosis task force in early 1994. METHODS: For 1994 and 1995 the medical records of all patients with culture-confirmed M. tuberculosis were reviewed according to the 1994 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention guidelines for case surveillance and risk assessment (infection control param…
