Using scene proximity judgments to study food-specific recognition ability.

The visual recognition of food depends on both domain-general and domain-specific visual mechanisms. Food-recognition ability negatively correlates with food neophobia (the tendency to avoid novel foods), possibly because the avoidance of novel food may limit perceptual experience that supports food recognition abilities. In prior work this relationship remained when domain-general object shape recognition ability (o) was controlled for, suggesting that this relationship is specific to food recognition. However, it is possible that other general recognition abilities, such as those for color a

Predatory marketing and false health promotion on social media: risk pathways in diet, fitness, and supplement communication.

As the commercial circulation of health content on social media continues to intensify, large volumes of fitness, nutrition, and wellness information lacking scientific grounding are repeatedly pushed to users, heightening the likelihood that psychologically susceptible individuals internalize distorted beliefs and engage in harmful practices. This study examines the mechanism through which exposure to such content influences psychological vulnerability, strengthens false health beliefs, shapes risky behavioral choices, and ultimately affects perceived health status. Using 482 valid survey res

Nomogram for the Pathological Complete Response After Neoadjuvant Chemotherapy in Muscle-Invasive Bladder Cancer Patients.

BACKGROUND: No validated instrument currently exists to predict neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) response in muscle-invasive bladder cancer (MIBC) patients. We aim to develop and validate a nomogram based on clinicopathological factors for predicting who would benefit most from NAC. METHODS: Between January 2016 and April 2023, 361 consecutive MIBC patients treated with NAC were enrolled in the study. Two hundred sixty patients at the Hu Nan institution comprised the development cohort. The validation cohort (91 patients) was from the Xiang Hua center. Patient clinicopathologic information was

Effect of auditory deprivation on adaptive locomotion: Interaction with lower visual field occlusion.

Auditory stimuli have been suggested to play a role in adequately controlling movement; however, their influence is not fully understood, particularly regarding dynamic behaviors, such as adaptive locomotion. This study aimed to investigate whether auditory deprivation affects adaptive locomotion. In particular, we aimed to elucidate the role of the auditory sense in obstacle avoidance by manipulating the visual field, which provides crucial sensory information for movement control. Sixteen participants approached a 15-cm obstacle located 6 m away and stepped over it under four different condi

Medical Students' Stress and Uncertainty During the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic triggered extraordinary levels of stress and uncertainty nationwide. In the current study, we use stress and coping theory and uncertainty management theory to examine how medical students coped with the stress and uncertainty associated with the disruption COVID-19 created in their training. Students completed a mixed-methods cross-sectional online survey one week after shifting to online instruction due to COVID-19. The survey included a measure of coping strategies and a series of open-ended questions designed to capture barriers and facilitators of coping and uncertai

Adverse events and labeling issues related to suspected sesame allergy reported in an online survey.

BACKGROUND: Allergen avoidance is critical for those with immunoglobulin E-mediated food allergy, but can only be successful with accurate product information. Although the Food and Drug Administration maintains the Center for Food Safety and Nutrition Adverse Event Reporting System to collect adverse event (AE) reports related to foods, there is substantial underreporting, and information regarding product labeling issues is limited. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe allergic reactions associated with accidental oral exposure to sesame and the role of product labeling. ME

The Laboratory's Role in Opioid Pain Medication Monitoring.

Opioid analgesics are the most potent pain medications therefore they are often used for the treatment of chronic malignant and non-malignant pain. Their strong addictive potential requires close monitoring of patients on opioid therapy for possible non-compliance with prescriptions, for drug diversion, and for proof of avoidance of non-prescribed or illicit opioids. Monitoring can be performed by urine drug screens or qualitative or quantitative drug confirmation assays. Natural, semi-synthetic and synthetic opioids have dissimilar chemical structures and they undergo extensive metabolism. Ph

Errorless learning in cognitive rehabilitation: a critical review.

Cognitive rehabilitation research is increasingly exploring errorless learning interventions, which prioritise the avoidance of errors during treatment. The errorless learning approach was originally developed for patients with severe anterograde amnesia, who were deemed to be at particular risk for error learning. Errorless learning has since been investigated in other memory-impaired populations (e.g., Alzheimer's disease) and acquired aphasia. In typical errorless training, target information is presented to the participant for study or immediate reproduction, a method that prevents partici

West Nile virus: a primer for the clinician.

This paper provides the clinician with an understanding of the epidemiologic and biological characteristics of West Nile virus in North America, as well as useful information on the diagnosis, reporting, and management of patients with suspected West Nile virus infection and on advising patients about prevention. Information was gathered from the medical literature and from national surveillance data through May 2002. Since the identification of West Nile virus in New York City in 1999, enzootic activity has been documented in 27 states and the District of Columbia. Continued geographic expans

The mean duration of gastroesophageal reflux during sleep as an indicator of respiratory symptoms from gastroesophageal reflux in children.

The coexistence of gastroesophageal reflux (GER) and respiratory symptoms has been reported in children, but identifying a reliable indicator of reflux-induced respiratory symptoms has been difficult. The mean duration of reflux episodes during sleep (ZMD), extracted from a 18- to 24-hour esophageal pH recording, has been presented previously as a reliable correlate of respiratory symptoms caused by GER in infants. To reexamine the accuracy of the ZMD we report 519 consecutive children with respiratory symptoms (aged 1 week to 15 years) who were referred for documentation of GER by 18- to 24-h

Making brain monitoring routine: why processed EEG monitoring should be standard practice.

Despite major technological advances and a growing evidence base, perioperative electroencephalographic (EEG) monitoring remains underused, even though general anaesthesia is fundamentally a brain-targeted intervention. Processed EEG (pEEG) captures clinically relevant brain physiology and provides actionable information to guide anaesthetic dosing, yet its adoption has been hindered by expectations of outcome certainty that exceed those applied to other standard monitors. Much of the controversy reflects misaligned endpoints-such as movement or binary awareness detection-rather than the domai

A Multicentre Italian Study on the Psychological Impact of an Inconclusive Cystic Fibrosis Diagnosis after Positive Neonatal Screening.

BACKGROUND: An inconclusive diagnosis of cystic fibrosis (CF) after positive newborn screening (NBS) may cause parental distress. We compared the psychological impact of CF transmembrane conductance regulator-related metabolic syndrome (CRMS)/CF screen-positive, inconclusive diagnosis (CFSPID), and clear CF diagnosis, on parents. METHODS: The participants were administered the Generalized Anxiety Disorder Scale, Patient Health Questionnaire-9, and the Italian version of the Impact of Event Scale-Revised as quantitative tools and semi-structured interviews as qualitative tools. A Case of Eating Disorder Diagnosed As Orthorexia Nervosa.

A 13-year-old girl presented to our hospital with chief complaints of rapid weight loss, fatigue, discomfort, chills in the extremities, and alopecia. We initially suspected anorexia nervosa (AN). However, she did not express fear of gaining weight or have a distorted perception of her weight or body shape; thus, her presentation was not typical of AN. We also suspected avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID), but she did not exhibit any food-avoidance behaviors. However, she was obsessed with nutrition control, so we diagnosed her with orthorexia nervosa (ON). She was hospitalized,

Post-Stroke Sleep-Disordered Breathing-Pathophysiology and Therapy Options.

Sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), encompassing both obstructive and central sleep apnea, is prevalent in at least 50% of stroke patients. Small studies have shown vast improvements in post-stroke functional recovery outcomes after the treatment of SDB by continuous positive airway pressure. However, compliance to this therapy is very poor in this complex patient group. There are alternative therapy options for SDB that may be more amenable for use in at least some post-stroke patients, including mandibular advancement, supine avoidance, and oxygen therapy. There are few studies, however, that

Reductions in experiential avoidance as a mediator of change in symptom outcome and quality of life in acceptance-based behavior therapy and applied relaxation for generalized anxiety disorder.

As a field, we lack information about specific mechanisms that are responsible for changes that occur over the course of treatments for anxiety disorders (Kazdin, 2007). Identifying these mechanisms would help streamline evidence-based approaches, increase treatment response rates, and aid in the dissemination and implementation of evidence-based approaches in diverse contexts. The current study examined reductions in experiential avoidance (EA; Hayes, Wilson, Gifford, Follette, & Strosahl, 1996), attempts to control or eliminate distressing internal experiences, regardless of behavioral conse

The Pressure Is On!: Neonatal Skin and Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure.

BACKGROUND: Premature infants have an increased risk for developing skin breakdown. Perceivably noninvasive interventions may have detrimental effects on the infant's skin. PURPOSE: This case presentation describes an extreme case of nasal breakdown associated with nasal continuous positive airway pressure (nCPAP). METHODS: Highlighted is the vital importance of proper placement, along with appropriate apparatus size, in the efforts to prevent skin breakdown. Ensuring that pressure points are avoided is imperative to prevent nCPAP-related injuries, along with treating the area in the event o

Putting evidence into practice: cancer-related lymphedema.

Cancer-related lymphedema is a progressive and chronic syndrome of abnormal swelling and multiple symptoms resulting from cancer treatment. Even with modern medical advances, lymphedema remains a major health problem affecting thousands of cancer survivors. To provide healthcare professionals with evidence-based clinical practice guidelines for lymphedema treatment and management, a systematic review was conducted to evaluate 75 selected articles from 2009-2014 by the Oncology Nursing Society Putting Evidence Into Practice lymphedema team. Findings of the systematic review support complete dec

Diagnostic approach in allergic and irritant contact dermatitis.

Contact dermatitis is a highly frequent disease with a significant impact on the quality of life of the affected patients and a relevant socioeconomic impact. According to the pathophysiological mechanisms involved, two major types of contact dermatitis may be recognized: irritant contact dermatitis (ICD) and allergic contact dermatitis (ACD). The two types may, and often do, coexist. Differentiating between ICD and ACD is often difficult in the clinical setting. The basis for a diagnosis of either ICD or ACD is mainly established by a comprehensive clinical history and physical examination, a

Preventing postnatal transmission of HIV-1 through breast-feeding: modifying infant feeding practices.

Approaches to reducing or preventing the risk of postnatal transmission through breast-feeding include the avoidance of all breast-feeding and the use of exclusive replacement feeds or exclusive breast-feeding for a limited duration with early and rapid cessation of breast-feeding around 4-6 months of age. The efficacy and safety of the latter approach have not been established and studies are in progress to provide further information. In addition, inactivation of HIV in breast milk would allow breast-feeding to continue while reducing the risk of postnatal transmission of HIV and may be usef
