Barriers to patient participation in a self-management and education website Renal PatientView: A questionnaire-based study of inactive users.

OBJECTIVES: The Renal PatientView (RPV) website is an information and education tool aimed at increasing patient involvement in their care. We have conducted this study to elucidate why some users remain inactive on RPV despite initially signing up for the service. METHODS: Patients at a teaching hospital in United Kingdom, who originally signed up for RPV but are no longer active (no logins during previous 6 months), were sent paper questionnaires. Responses were collected for up to 6 months. RESULTS: Of the 190 questionnaires, 69 (39%) were returned partially or fully completed. Majority o

Musculoskeletal disorders: epidemiology and treatment seeking behavior of secondary school students in a nigerian community.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological information paucity exists on musculoskeletal disorders (MSD) among secondary school students in Nigeria. We aimed to determine the prevalence, pattern, and treatment seeking behaviors (TSB) of MSD in Southwest, Nigeria. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A school-based cross-sectional study was conducted in four randomly selected secondary schools in Ile-Ife in 2007. All the students were screened for MSD using an interviewer-administered questionnaire and physical examination, which involved the use of a scoliometer and a goniometer. Affected children were recommended for fo

Stratified patterns of healthcare-seeking behavior among older adults in Fujian, China: exploring the behavioral foundations of health inequality.

BACKGROUND: China is experiencing rapid population aging amid longstanding but gradually narrowing disparities in health resource allocation. As insurance coverage, primary care capacity, and basic service availability become increasingly equitable, variations in healthcare-seeking behaviors have become a key pathway through which socio-economic differences are reproduced as health inequalities. This study examined the distribution, latent patterns, and socio-demographic correlates of five representative healthcare-seeking behaviors among older adults in China. METHODS: A cross-sectional surve

Harnessing the power of midwifery: Transforming self-efficacy and health navigation among women with polycystic ovarian syndrome.

The impact of a midwife-led intervention on self-efficacy and health information-seeking behavior (HISB) in women with Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is of interest. Sixty women were divided into an experimental and a control group, with the experimental group receiving a structured intervention over four weeks. Results showed significant improvements in self-efficacy and HISB in the experimental group, compared to no change in the control group. Thus, we show that midwife-led interventions effectively empower women by enhancing their ability to manage PCOS. It emphasizes the importance of

Sex differences in informational needs and media dependencies during the 2018 California wildfires.

Previous research has suggested that men and women differ in a number of crisis-related behaviors including information-seeking behavior and media dependencies. The 2018 California wildfires provided a context where demographic differences are largely unexplored, as most prior emergency communication research has focused on slower moving events such as hurricanes and storm surges. Participants were identified based on their residence in areas affected by the Camp and Woolsey fires (N = 363). Sex differences were discovered for how people found out about the fires, perceptions of medium utility

Muscarinic Acetylcholine M2 Receptors Regulate Lateral Habenula Neuron Activity and Control Cocaine Seeking Behavior.

The lateral habenula (LHb) balances reward and aversion by opposing activation of brain reward nuclei and is involved in the inhibition of responding for cocaine in a model of impulsive behavior. Previously, we reported that the suppression of cocaine seeking was prevented by LHb inactivation or nonselective antagonism of LHb mAChRs. Here, we investigate mAChR subtypes mediating the effects of endogenous acetylcholine in this model of impulsive drug seeking and define cellular mechanisms in which mAChRs alter LHb neuron activity. Using in vitro electrophysiology, we find that LHb neurons are d

A COM-B and Theoretical Domains Framework Mapping of the Barriers and Facilitators to Effective Communication and Help-Seeking Among People With, or Seeking a Diagnosis Of, Endometriosis.

Endometriosis is a chronic condition in which tissue resembling the endometrium grows outside the womb, causing severe chronic pain. People with endometriosis report difficulty in help-seeking and communicating with healthcare professionals, contributing to diagnosis delays and ineffective management. The present study aimed to identify barriers and facilitators to effective communication using the Theoretical Domains Framework (TDF) and COM-B model to inform behavior change intervention development. This study was a qualitative semi-structured interview and open-ended survey design. Thematic

Astrocytic HIV-1 Nef Expression Decreases Glutamate Transporter Expression in the Nucleus Accumbens and Increases Cocaine-Seeking Behavior in Rats.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Cocaine use disorder is an intersecting issue in populations with HIV-1, further exacerbating the clinical course of the disease and contributing to neurotoxicity and neuroinflammation. Cocaine and HIV neurotoxins play roles in neuronal damage during neuroHIV progression by disrupting glutamate homeostasis in the brain. Even with combined antiretroviral therapy (cART), HIV-1 Nef, an early viral protein expressed in approximately 1% of infected astrocytes, remains a key neurotoxin. This study investigates the relationship among Nef, glutamate homeostasis, and cocaine in t

Personality correlates of revenge-seeking: Multidimensional links to physical aggression, impulsivity, and aggressive pleasure.

People differ in how much they seek retribution for interpersonal insults, slights, rejections, and other antagonistic actions. Identifying individuals who are most prone towards such revenge-seeking is a theoretically-informative and potentially violence-reducing endeavor. However, we have yet to understand the extent to which revenge-seeking individuals exhibit specific features of aggressiveness, impulsivity, and what motivates their hunt for retribution. Toward this end, we conducted three studies (total N = 673), in which revenge-seeking was measured alongside these other constructs. Anal

Anogenital warts: influence on quality of life in Dutch soldiers.

BACKGROUND: Anogenital warts are one of the most prevalent sexually transmitted virus infections in the Netherlands and cause frustration, shame, and even depression. This study was performed to determine the effect of having anogenital warts on the quality of life in Dutch soldiers with the use of a dermatology-specific quality of life (QoL) questionnaire. METHODS: We used the Skindex-29 QoL questionnaire in 100 predominantly heterosexual soldiers with clinically confirmed first episode of condylomata acuminate in this study. RESULTS: Results confirmed that first episodes of anogenital wart

Complementary and alternative medicine use among older Australian women--a qualitative analysis.

BACKGROUND: The use of complementary and alternative medicines (CAM) among older adults is an emerging health issue, however little is known about older people's experiences of using CAM and the cultural, geographical and other determinants of CAM use in this population. This study used qualitative methods to explore older women's views of CAM and reasons for their use of CAM. Participants for the project were drawn from the Australian Longitudinal Study on Women's Health (ALSWH) 1921-1926 birth cohort. Women who responded positively to a question about CAM use in Survey 5 (2008) of the ALSWH

Associations between cancer-related information seeking and receiving PET imaging for routine cancer surveillance--an analysis of longitudinal survey data.

BackgroundRoutine cancer surveillance with positron emission tomography (PET) is not recommended for most patients who have completed curative treatment for cancer. Yet, recent trends suggest that PET is increasingly used for follow-up among patients with cancer. This study investigates whether information-seeking behaviors predicted self-reported utilization of PET for routine surveillance in patients with colorectal, breast, and prostate cancer.MethodsWe conducted annual surveys for 3 years in a cohort of Pennsylvania cancer survivors diagnosed with colorectal, breast, or prostate cancer in

Seeking Care for Obsessive-Compulsive Symptoms Among African Americans: Findings From the National Survey of American Life.

Although obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is associated with clinically significant distress, many OCD patients do not seek treatment. Studies show that Black Americans with OCD are even less likely to obtain treatment due to differences in access. This study explored demographic and symptom outcomes associated with mental health service use for obsessions and compulsions among a nationally representative sample of African American adults (n = 3,570). The analytic sample for this analysis is African Americans who endorsed either obsessions (n = 435) or compulsions (n = 543). Few respondents

Social Determinants Associated with Substance Use and Treatment Seeking in Females of Reproductive Age in the United States.

Introduction: Females of reproductive age (FoRA; 15-49 years) are the demographic most likely to be diagnosed with a substance use disorder. Preventative treatment prior to or during pregnancy is critical. Stigma and social inequities can delay access to care. There is limited research examining social determinants of health (SDoH) and how they are related to substance use and treatment seeking in this demographic. Methods: We analyzed the 2016-2019 data from the United States National Survey on Drug Use and Health using multivariable logistic regression models. Statistically significant varia
