[Malaria and pregnancy].

In regions where malaria is endemism, the disease is a recognised cause of complications of pregnancy such as spontaneous abortion, prematur … sing steadily, chemoprophylaxis should be supplemented by mechanical protection against malaria and insect repellents. As a rule, malaria is treated with chloroquine. In cases of Falciparum malaria in whom chloroquine resistance is suspected, treatment with mefloquine may be employed although this should only be employed in cases of dire necessity in pregnant patie …

Ethnobotany, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and toxicology of the genus Datura (Solanaceae).

Datura (Solanaceae), a traditional Chinese medicine, has been used to treat arthralgia, asthma, cough, gastrointestinal cramps, neuropathic migraine, and injuries from falls. More than 432 bioactive constituents were isolated and identified from different species of Datura, including steroids, alkaloids, flavonoids, terpenoids, -phenolics, and aliphatics compounds. Pharmacological studies demonstrated that Datura extracts and the compounds showed anti-inflammatory, analgesic, antibacterial, antioxidant, anti-cancer, cell protection, and insect-repellent activities. However, many studies were m

Relevance of enantiomeric separations in environmental science.

A significant number of all organic chemicals that are released into the environment are racemic mixtures. Most environmental regulations and scientific environmental studies treat racemic mixtures as though they were single, pure compounds. This can lead to incorrect toxicological, distribution, degradation and other data. A series of new enantioselective chromatographic techniques have been developed that allow the facile separation and quantitation of chiral compounds of environmental importance. Nineteen racemic compounds that have been or currently are being released to the environment ar

The acute toxicity and primary irritancy of 2-ethyl-1,3-hexanediol.

2-Ethyl-1,3-hexanediol (EHD), an insect repellant, was found to have acute peroral LD50 values in the rat of 9.85 ml/kg (males) and 4.92 ml/kg (females). Acute percutaneous LD50 values in the rabbit were 10.8 ml/kg (males) and 9.51 ml/kg (females). There were neither deaths nor signs of toxicity during or following a 6 hr exposure to a statically or dynamically generated substantially saturated vapor atmosphere. A 4 hr exposure to a high concentration (3.8 mg/liter) of a respirable aerosol of EHD (mass median aerodynamic diameter of 2.0 um) produced only minor signs of irritation during exposu

Extraction, Chemical Composition and Insecticidal Activities of Lantana camara Linn. Leaf Essential Oils against Tribolium castaneum, Lasioderma serricorne and Callosobruchus chinensis.

Storage pests and the food spoilage they cause are problems of great concern. Using essential oil obtained from different plants as an insecticide against these storage pests can be considered an environmentally friendly pest management option. Lantana camara Linn. (family Verbenaceae) is a flowering species, and is also a noxious weed that can proliferate well in nearly all geographical habitats. A biopesticide derived from the essential oil extracted from this plant can offer an effective solution for controlling storage pests. The goal of this study is to extract and analyse the chemical co

However, studies to show the effect … together, these findings suggest that use of Cu(II) or Co(III) conjugation to organic compounds, in insect repellents and/or food additives could enhance DENV2/ZIKV loads in human cells and perhaps induce pathogenesis in infected individuals or individuals pre-exposed to such conjugated complexes. IMPORTANCE: Mosquito-borne diseases are of great concern to the man …

Volatile organic compounds released from cabbage plants infested with wingless green peach aphid (Myzus persicae) attracts more conspecifics.

BACKGROUND: Plants release a diverse array of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that play a role in interactions with other plants and arthropod herbivores. The potential of using plants that emit either repellent or attractive VOCs to help managing insect populations have been shown. However, the response of the green peach aphid (Myzus persicae), a major sucking insect pest worldwide, to VOCs from cabbage and infested with conspecific remains unknown. This study investigated how VOCs released by cabbage infested or uninfested by Myzus persicae influenced host selection in seven different cul

Nutrition Influences Caffeine-Mediated Sleep Loss in Drosophila.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Plant-derived caffeine is regarded as a defensive compound produced to prevent herbivory. Caffeine is generally repellent to insects and often used to study the neurological basis for aversive responses in the model insect, Drosophila melanogaster. Caffeine is also studied for its stimulatory properties where sleep or drowsiness is suppressed across a range of species. Since limiting access to food also inhibits fly sleep-an effect known as starvation-induced sleep suppression-we tested whether aversion to caffeinated food results in reduced nutrient intake and assessed how t

Carnivore Attractant or Plant Elicitor? Multifunctional Roles of Methyl Salicylate Lures in Tomato Defense.

Synthetic plant volatile lures attract natural enemies, but may have non-target effects due to the multifunctional nature of volatile signals. For example, methyl salicylate (MeSA) is used to attract predators, yet also serves as a signaling hormone involved in plant pathogen defense. We investigated the consequences of deploying MeSA lures to attract predators for tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) defense against herbivores. To understand the spatial distribution of the lure's effect, we exposed tomatoes in the field to MeSA along a linear distance gradient and induced defenses by simulating feed

Arthropod-Borne Diseases: The Camper's Uninvited Guests.

Arthropod-borne diseases are a major problem whenever outdoor activities bring arthropods and people into contact. The arthropods discussed here include arachnids (ticks) and insects. Most arthropod bites and stings are minor, with the notable exception being bee-sting anaphylaxis. Ticks cause the most disease transmission. Key hard tick vectors include black-legged (Ixodes), dog (Dermacentor), and lone star (Amblyomma) ticks, which transmit Lyme and various rickettsial diseases. Insect repellents, permethrin sprays, and proper tick inspection reduce this risk significantly. Lyme disease and t…

Knowledge of mosquitos in relation to public and domestic control activities in the cities of Dar es Salaam and Tanga.

A study of community awareness of mosquitos and related subjects in the residential areas of two Tanzanian cities (Dar es Salaam and Tanga) showed that residents were well aware of mosquitos. Almost all claimed to use some form of domestic mosquito control product for their personal protection, and many spend a significant portion of the household income on this. The problems of nuisance-biting and malaria transmission are usually not separated and are considered to be the result of poor environmental hygiene, for which both residents and local authorities are responsible. Although Culex mosqu

α-Copaene is a potent repellent against the Asian Citrus Psyllid Diaphorina citri.

The Asian Citrus Psyllid (ACP), Diaphorina citri, severely threatens citrus production worldwide by transmitting the greening (= Huanglongbing)-causing bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter asiaticus. There is growing evidence that the push-pull strategy is suitable to partially mitigate HLB by repelling ACP with transgenic plants engineered to produce repellents and attracting the vector to plants with a minimal disease transmission rate. Species that pull ACP away from commercial citrus plants have been identified, and transgenic plants that repel ACP have been developed. The concept of a repell

Phytochemistry, Mode of Action Predictions, and Synergistic Potential of Hypenia irregularis Essential Oil Mixtures for Controlling Aedes aegypti.

Aedes aegypti, also known as the yellow fever mosquito, presents a major public health challenge, highlighting the need for effective biorational agents for mosquito control. Here, we investigated the synergistic effects of essential oil mixtures derived from Hypenia irregularis that is a mint-family shrub native to Brazil's Cerrado biome, known as "alecrim do Cerrado", in combination with essential oils from noni (Morinda citrifolia), Brazilian mint ("salva-do-Marajó", Hyptis crenata), and lemongrass (Cymbopogon citratus) against Ae. aegypti. We conducted phytochemical analyses and assessed l

Evaluation of the protective efficacy of a spatial repellent to reduce malaria incidence in children in Mali compared to placebo: study protocol for a cluster-randomized double-blinded control trial (the AEGIS program).

BACKGROUND: Spatial repellents have been widely used for the prevention of mosquito bites but their efficacy in reducing mosquito-borne diseases has never been evaluated in Africa. Additionally, spatial repellents have the potential of being critical tools in the prevention of mosquito-borne diseases in contexts where typical vectors control efforts such as insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spray (IRS) are inaccessible or underutilized such as among displaced populations or in emergency relief settings. To address this knowledge gap, Kolondieba District, Sikasso Region, Mali

A rapid method for screening mosquito repellents on Anopheles pseudopunctipennis and Aedes aegypti.

One of the main vectors for malaria in Latin America is Anopheles pseudopunctipennis (Theobald), whereas Aedes aegypti (L.) is the primary vector of dengue, yellow fever, Zika and chikungunya viruses. The use of repellents is recommended as a personal protection method against these mosquitoes. However there are very few studies evaluating the effect of repellents on An. pseudopunctipennis. The use of a Petri dish to study repellence has been applied by several authors on flies, cockroaches, kissing bugs and mosquitoes, being a valuable technique for species that are difficult to breed under l

Mothball ingestion as a manifestation of pica, leading to paradichlorobenzene CNS toxicity.

BACKGROUND: Pica is a poorly understood psychiatric disorder that presents with the ingestion of non-nutritious substances for unclear reasons. A high index of suspicion for unusual toxin exposure aids in the diagnosis of pica patients presenting with unexplained neurodegenerative features. METHODS: We present a 47-year-old female with worsening gait over the past year. Prior to this, she was fully independent with activities of daily living, but is now mostly housebound due to frequent falls. Past medical history is significant for menorrhagia, iron deficiency anemia and pica. CBC and iron s

Repellency of DEET, picaridin, and three essential oils to Triatoma rubida (Hemiptera: Reduviidae: Triatominae).

The kissing bug, Triatoma rubida (Uhler) is a common hematophagous bug in Tucson, AZ, and is responsible for causing severe allergic reactions in some bitten individuals. DEET, picaridin, tea tree oil, peppermint oil, and citronella oil were tested for repellency to T. rubida and its ability to probe and feed on a small restrained rat. No long range repellency was observed with any of the test materials. The lowest repellent concentrations observed were: 10% DEET, 7% picaridin; 30% tea tree oil, 3.3% peppermint oil, and 0.165% citronella oil. Only citronella oil was able to stop all probing an
