Measuring functional skills in preschool children at risk for neurodevelopmental disabilities.

Approximately 400,000 preschool children have a major neurodevelopmental disorder impacting on mobility, cognitive-adaptive, or communicative skills. As many as 1 in 3 children live at psychosocial disadvantage because of poverty, parental mental illness or substance misuse, or low parental educational (i.e. less than high school). In the past decade over 500,000 preschool children have survived being born with very low birth weight (1001-1500 g) or extremely low birth weight status (< or =1000 g). Given the scope of these risks and the importance of optimizing outcomes for vulnerable children

The development of a structured schedule for collecting ICF-CY-based information on disability in school and preschool children: an action research from Italy.

The aim of this study was to present the development of an instrument to collect disability information in school settings, based on the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health, Children and Youth version (ICF-CY): the ICF-PEI Schedule (ICF-CY-based schedule for Individualized Education Plan). Through an action-research process, a group of 14 teachers participated in the definition of a comprehensive list of ICF-CY categories, which were then used in a pilot test: categories relevant in at least 30% of the cases were retained. Teachers also reported the most relevant…

Laying the foundation for an instrument to assess environmental factors in people with chronic pulmonary diseases: mapping the content of the Craig Hospital Inventory of Environmental Factors (CHIEF) to ICF core sets.

PURPOSE: To map the concepts assessed by Craig Hospital Inventory of Environmental Factors (CHIEF) to International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) and to ICF core sets related to pulmonary diseases. METHODS: Two professionals with adequate taxonomic knowledge of the ICF performed the initial linking, following standardized and updated linking rules. The same professionals subsequently linked the CHIEF items to the ICF core sets for post-acute cardiopulmonary diseases, obstructive pulmonary diseases, and interstitial pulmonary diseases to map CHIEF's alignment with

Difficulties in Daily Life Reported by Patients With Homonymous Visual Field Defects.

BACKGROUND: Homonymous visual field defects (HVFD) are common after postchiasmatic acquired brain injury and may have a significant impact on independent living and participation in society. Vision-related difficulties experienced in daily life are usually assessed using questionnaires. The current study 1) links the content of 3 of these questionnaires to the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) and 2) provides analyses of vision-related difficulties reported by patients with HVFD and minimal comorbidities. METHODS: Fifty-four patients with homonymous hemi…

ICF framework in cardiac rehabilitation: a real-life implementation in post-cardiac surgery and chronic heart failure patients.

BACKGROUND: The International Classification of Functioning, Disability, and Health (ICF) is growing in importance in cardiac rehabilitation (CR) as the number of elderly comorbid patients increases. AIM: To classify through the ICF framework a group of post-cardiac surgery (CS) and chronic heart failure (CHF) patients undergoing rehabilitation. Then, to compare the two groups and identify possible factors at admission that could affect ICF evaluations at discharge. DESIGN: Observational retrospective real-life study. SETTING: Two inpatient CR units. POPULATION: Consecutive CS and CHF pati

SCADI: A standard dataset for self-care problems classification of children with physical and motor disability.

Self-care problems diagnosis and classification is an important challenge in exceptional children health care systems. Since, self-care problems classification is a time-consuming process and requires expert occupational therapists, using an expert system in classifying these problems can decrease cost and time, efficiently. Expert systems refer to the systems that are based on artificial intelligence methods, which have the ability to learn, infer, and predict. In order to configure and train an expert system, a standard dataset is critical for the learning phase. Hence, in this research, a n

None of the studies used the framework for environmental factors presented in the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF). The outcome variable psychopathology was rarely assessed using a diagnostic standard. Experiences of women with disabilities during and after COVID-19: Needs, sources of support and implications for policy and practice.

Approximately 700 million women and girls worldwide live with disabilities, facing compounded discrimination due to both gender and disability. Despite their large numbers, they are often excluded from decision-making and rendered invisible. Research shows that crisis such as nature disasters and public health crises affects people with disabilities more severely than the general population, and women more than men. Yet, studies focusing specifically on women with disabilities in such contexts remain scarce. The present qualitative study aimed to address this gap by analyzing 56 semi-structure

Novel subgroups of functional ability in older adults and their associations with adverse outcomes.

BACKGROUND: There is no general agreement on a standard form of functional classification in older adults and is mainly assessed by Activities of Daily Living (ADL) and/or Instrument Activity of Daily Living. A refined classification based on evaluation the limitations of intrinsic capacity, environment and social interaction, could provide a basis to predict the future disability and identify individuals with increased risk of adverse outcomes. METHODS: A new functional classification among older adults aged 60 and over was conducted by latent class analysis and compared with the traditional

Caregiver Perceptions of an Interdisciplinary Intensive Therapy Program: A Qualitative Study.

PURPOSE: To explore perceptions of caregivers of children with neurodevelopmental conditions participating in an interdisciplinary intensive therapy program. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews were completed with caregivers. The intensive program consisted of occupational, physical, and/or speech therapy 3 to 6.5 hours/day, 3 to 5 days/week, for 4 weeks. Team-based collaborative goal setting was used to determine each child's plan of care. Reflexive thematic analysis identified interview themes. RESULTS: Thirteen caregivers participated. Children ranged in age from 6 to 13 years; diagnoses

Is My University Inclusive? Towards a Multi-Domain Instrument for Sustainable Environments in Higher Education.

We present a pilot study on three Italian Universities using a multi-domain set of indicators for Inclusion. The indicators are expressed in the coding system of the International Classification of Functioning Disability and Health - ICF - (World Health Organization, 2001). We selected three medium-sized Italian Universities: Brescia, Trieste and Venice. We combined a student-centered Universal Design philosophy for the built environment and Universal Design for Learning for the instructional environment. We identified four ICF Environmental Chapters (E1, E3, E4 and E5) and made them specific
