Partner-serving moral cognition helps men to maintain romantic relationships from which they benefit more than women.

Wahring, Simpson, and Van Lange's model is well-argued but underspecifies the psychological processes contributing to men's relationship maintenance behaviors. Extending their model to the realm of moral cognition, we propose that men utilize partner-serving moral double standards to excuse their female partners' everyday relationship transgressions. Such hypercrisy helps men to sustain romantic relationships from which they benefit more than women do.

Relational cultural theory: Context in therapy.

Relational cultural theory identifies relational connection as central to healing. Relational cultural theory's tenets-authenticity, zest, mutuality, and collaboration-engender healing through promoting clients' relational connection with the self, the clinician, and other people. Understanding the individual, familial, community, and sociocultural contexts in which clients are located allows for deliberately incorporating political processes into therapy. Though there are similarities and differences between CBT and relational cultural therapy, recent progress builds on past work that identif

Better Together?: A Systematic Review of the Effectiveness of HIV Prevention Interventions that Build or Strengthen Social Ties.

Although social relationships impact health and social dynamics play a key role in shaping HIV vulnerability, results from intentional efforts to build or strengthen social relationships have not been synthesized to understand if and how such interventions work to prevent HIV in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). We conducted a systematic review of HIV prevention interventions implemented in LMICs, published between 2010 and 2022, that used pre/post or multi-arm methods to evaluate interventions that focused on building/strengthening social relationships to impact HIV-related outcomes.

Green-eyed monster or green-eyed mirage? A new procedure for telling when begrudging others' success is or is not envy.

Begrudging others' success is a hallmark of envy. Understandably, this has made envy researchers keen to discover the variables that prompt people to begrudge successful others. However, not all negative reactions toward successful individuals stem from envy; for instance, one need not invoke the green-eyed monster to explain our desire to see immoral villains fail. While seemingly uncontroversial, this point poses a challenge to a large and growing body of research that has linked envy with (un)deservingness, finding that undeserved success prompts more ill will than deserved success: Are the

Cooperation and social organization depend on weighing private and public reputations.

To avoid exploitation by defectors, people can use past experiences with others when deciding to cooperate or not ('private information'). Alternatively, people can derive others' reputation from 'public' information provided by individuals within the social network. However, public information may be aligned or misaligned with one's own private experiences and different individuals, such as 'friends' and 'enemies', may have different opinions about the reputation of others. Using evolutionary agent-based simulations, we examine how cooperation and social organization is shaped when agents (1)

Sources and processes of social influence on health-related choices: A systematic review based on a social-interdependent choice paradigm.

BACKGROUND: Most choices in healthcare are not made in social isolation. However, current econometric models treat patients' preferences as the sole determinants of their choices. Through the lens of sociology and medical sociology theories, this paper presents a systematic literature review of identifiable social influences on patients' choices, serving as a first step in developing a social-interdependent choice paradigm. METHODS: Following the PRISMA guideline and using nine databases, we identified the individual agents or groups involved in health-related choices, the functional content

A Model of Trust Processes in Borderline Personality Disorder: A Systematic Review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Unstable relationships are a core feature of borderline personality disorder (BPD). Impairments in trust processes (i.e., appraisal and learning regarding others' trustworthiness) can subserve interpersonal problems associated with BPD, but the determinants, mechanisms, consequences, and variations in trust impairments among individuals with BPD remain poorly characterized. Thus, a better understanding of such impairments could help target interventions that address the interpersonal problems of individuals with BPD beyond emotion dysregulation, impulsivity, and aggression.

Couples communication and cancer: Sequences and trajectories of behavioral affective processes in relation to intimacy.

Cancer poses a set of physical and emotional challenges to the patient, spouse, and their relationship. One challenge for couples is discussing cancer-related concerns in a manner that facilitates intimacy. Current couple-based interventions have been shown to have mixed efficacy, and little is known about how they bring about improvements. This study aims to expand our understanding of dyadic communication and intimacy to adapt and/or develop more effective interventions for couples coping with cancer. To accomplish this goal, the present study examined affective and behavioral processes asso

Building a deeper understanding of social relationship health in adolescents with narcolepsy disorder.

STUDY OBJECTIVES: Common symptoms for patients with narcolepsy can have a significant impact on social health. As one peak for symptom onset is adolescence, these symptoms impact social relationships during a critical developmental period. Much of the existing literature in this domain has relied on broad questionnaires, with less insight into the nuances of patients' potential social struggles. METHODS: Adolescents (aged 12-17 years) with narcolepsy and their parents individually completed a semistructured interview (n = 14 dyads). Interview transcripts were analyzed using a multistage thema

Character Perceptions of Storytellers: Investigating the Mediated Contact Hypothesis and Stories About Living With HIV.

Research into mediated contact hypothesis shows that exposure to people sharing their stories of living with a stigmatized condition can decrease negative stereotypes and improve willingness to engage in future interpersonal contact, but results are inconsistent. In this study, we offer novel reasons for why mediated intergroup contact can facilitate positive inter-group outcomes, by focusing on audience members' perceptions of the storyteller's character (i.e., perceptions of attributes or features that make up an individual). Our model was tested (N = 369, U.S. adults) with video-recorded st

A randomized controlled trial of enhanced mentoring program practices for children of incarcerated caregivers: Assessing impacts on youth and match outcomes.

Parental incarceration is an adverse childhood experience that is associated with heightened risk for negative outcomes in youth. Mentoring programs seek to mitigate this risk by providing children of incarcerated parents (COIP) with a supportive relationship that fosters positive outcomes. The current study presents findings from a longitudinal evaluation of enhanced mentoring program practices designed for supporting COIP. One thousand three hundred and thirty-four COIP mentees, their parents or guardians, and their mentors were randomly assigned to receive either enhanced or business as usu

Psychoanalysis of COVID-19 Patient Narratives: A Descriptive Study.

Background and Objectives: COVID-19 patients are a psychologically vulnerable patient group who suffer from both physical symptoms and psychological problems. The present study is a psychoanalytic investigation of COVID-19 patients utilizing Lacan's desire theory. We aimed to explore the manner in which patients' desire is presented in their lived experience narratives and sought to discover factors which directly impacted on this process. Materials and Methods: In-depth semi-structural interviews were conducted with 36 COVID-19 patients in China. During each interview, participants narrated t

Altered activation in the action observation system during synchronization in high loneliness individuals.

Lonely people tend to evaluate social exchanges negatively and to display difficulties in interactions. Interpersonal synchronization is crucial for achieving positive interactions, promoting affinity, closeness, and satisfaction. However, little is known about lonely individuals' ability to synchronize and about their brain activity while synchronizing. Following the screening of 303 participants, we recruited 32 low and 32 high loneliness participants. They were scanned while engaged in movement synchronization, using a novel dyadic interaction paradigm. Results showed that high loneliness i

Precuneus brain response changes differently during human-robot and human-human dyadic social interaction.

Human-human interactions (HHI) and human-robot interactions (HRI) are compared to identify differences between cognitive processes reflecting bonding in social interactions with natural and artificial agents. We capitalize on a unique corpus of neuroimaging data (fMRI) recorded while participants freely discussed with another human or a conversational robotic head, in order to study a crucial parameter of human social cognition, namely that social interactions are adaptive bidirectional processes that evolve over time. We used linear statistics to identify regions of the brain where activity c

Social Undermining and Interpersonal Rumination among Employees: The Mediating Role of Being the Subject of Envy and the Moderating Role of Social Support.

Rumination is a common problem and is associated with reduced psychological well-being. However, little is known about how rumination in the workplace is affected by interpersonal relationships. We propose that negative workplace behavior could serve as a potential influencing factor for rumination. Therefore, the current study constructed a multilevel moderated mediation model to investigate the relationship between workplace unit social undermining and interpersonal rumination. We also examined whether unit social support moderated that relationship and whether being the subject of envy medi

Scaling Up a Peer-Mediated Program Statewide: Lessons Learned Through Peer to Peer.

Peer-mediated interventions are a powerful and practical way of promoting the social relationships, learning, and inclusion of students with disabilities. In this article, we describe one state's efforts to scale up a research-based, peer-mediated program called Peer to Peer throughout Michigan. Among the more than 700 schools that now offer this program, as many as 18,000 peers are involved in supporting nearly 5,000 schoolmates with autism and other developmental disabilities in their learning and relationships. We share our perspectives on eight key factors that have contributed to the grow

The social side of personality: Do affiliation and intimacy motives moderate associations of personal relationships with well-being?

BACKGROUND: The quantity of social relationships and social interactions is positively related to well-being, but the underlying role of personality dispositions in these associations is unclear. The present study investigated whether social motives for affiliation and intimacy moderate associations of personal networks with well-being. METHOD: We analyzed data from N = 389 individuals living alone (aged 35-60 years) who provided self-reports of social motives and well-being, and who completed an ego-centered social network task. A subsample of N = 331 individuals participated in a social net

The Empathic Responses: A Neglected Field for Research.

The more fully one comprehends the nature of the shifts in theoretical and methodological orientation which have been taking place in social psychology during the past two decades, the greater becomes his appreciation of the fundamental contributions made by Harry Stack Sullivan to this highly significant movement in social science. An appraisal of the changes here indicated has been made elsewhere1. Briefly stated the basic trend has been toward what may be called interactional theories of human behavior and personality and away from static atomistic attributive theories, with accompanying ef

Interpersonal attachment, early family environment, and trauma in hoarding: A systematic review.

The formation of intense emotional attachments to objects, difficulty parting with possessions, and the extreme accumulation of clutter are key features of Hoarding Disorder (HD). Although substantial literature implicates processes such as dysfunctional beliefs and maladaptive emotional cycles in HD, little is known about the vulnerability factors that lead to their development and hoarding symptomatology. The current review sought to systematically collate and integrate findings from studies investigating the relationship between hoarding symptoms and three proposed vulnerability factors: i)
