Case report: Ileocecal preservation for multiple small intestinal duplications.

Small-intestinal duplication is a rare congenital developmental anomaly that is mainly single; multiple small-intestinal duplications are rare. Most malformations are located in the ileocecal region. The primary surgical treatment is complete resection of the malformations and adjacent intestinal ducts. However, the ileocecal junction plays an important role in children, and it is difficult to preserve it; multiple intestinal repairs increase the risk of postoperative intestinal fistula, which is a challenge for pediatric surgeons. Herein, we report a case of ileocecal preservation surgery for…

Stimulation of intestinal apolipoprotein A-IV by lipid is independent of capsaicin-sensitive afferent signals.

We tested the hypothesis that stimulation of synthesis and secretion of intestinal apolipoprotein A-IV (apo A-IV) by intestinally infused lipid is mediated by capsaicin-sensitive afferent signals. Vehicle or capsaicin (125 mg/kg) was systemically administered to rats; then the effects of intestinal infusion of lipid emulsions on lymph lipid and apo A-IV transport were determined in rats equipped with duodenal infusion cannulas and mesenteric lymph fistulas. Capsaicin treatment did not significantly affect lymph outputs of triglyceride, phospholipid, and apo A-IV during duodenal infusion of tri

Tumor-Bowel Fistula as a Rare Form of Recurrent Ovarian Cancer-Imaging and Treatment: Preliminary Report.

BACKGROUND: The aim of this pilot study was to evaluate the value of imaging techniques, including computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), in the diagnosis of a tumor-bowel fistula as a rare form of epithelial ovarian cancer (EOC) relapse. We also performed an initial assessment of the effectiveness of the treatment of this form of relapse. METHODS: The study group consisted of eight patients with suspected platinum-sensitive recurrence in the form of a tumor/bowel fistula. All patients finished their first line of chemotherapy and subsequently showed complete remission

Clinical Remission of Crohn's Disease and Closure of a Rectovaginal Fistula After Autologous Non-Myeloablative Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Crohn's Disease is a chronic, heterogeneous, recurrent and remitting inflammatory bowel disease that can affect any part of the digestive system. To date there is no cure for this disease. Clinical treatment aims to reestablish a balance and avoid crises that are common in an immune-mediated disease that promotes intestinal dysregulation. Anti-inflammatory medications, corticosteroids, immunosuppressants and biologics are part of the therapeutic arsenal for the disease. Obstructions, strictures and intestinal fistulas are complications that require repeat surgery in most patients. …

Laparoscopic management of Crohn's disease-related complex enterovesical, enterocutaneous and enteroenteric fistula: A case report.

The management of Crohn's disease is medical, with surgery reserved for emergencies and complications. Fistulizing Crohn's disease can present with either an internal or external fistula. Internal fistulae are common in patients with ileocolonic disease. Enterovesical fistulae form a very small part of these internal fistulae. An ileovesical fistula with other concomitant internal or external fistulae is a complex fistula. A patient with an ileovesical fistula further compounded by an enteroenteric fistula and an enterocutaneous fistula is a difficult surgical patient to manage because of the

Indications and outcomes of enterovesical and colovesical fistulas: systematic review of the literature and meta-analysis of prevalence.

BACKGROUND: Entero-colovesical fistula is a rare complication of various benign and malignant diseases. The diagnosis is prominently based on clinical symptoms; imaging studies are necessary not only to confirm the presence of the fistula, but more importantly to demonstrate the extent and the nature of the fistula. There is still a lack of consensus regarding the if, when and how to repair the fistula. The aim of the study is to review the different surgical treatment options, focus on surgical indications, and explore cumulative recurrence, morbidity, and mortality rates of entero-vesical an

Enterovesical fistulas in Crohn's disease.

BACKGROUND: Crohn's disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the bowel, that may affects the urinary system. Although fistula formation has been reported in up to 35% patients suffering from Crohn's disease, urinary fistulas affect only 2 to 8% patients. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Authors have done a retrospective study with the aim to investigate the incidence of enterovesical fistulas in patients admitted due to Crohn's disease to the IInd Department of Surgery of the Comenius University Medical School and Department of Surgery of University Hospital Nitra during 10 years long period.
