[Intestinal perforation secondary to intestinal malrotation in an adult: Case report].

BACKGROUND: Intestinal malrotation is a congenital anomaly resulting from abnormal rotation of the intestine during fetal development, affecting its fixation and orientation. Although it is primarily diagnosed in infancy, it can cause severe complications in adults, such as intestinal obstruction, volvulus, and perforation. The objective is to illustrate the clinical presentation and management of intestinal malrotation in adults, highlighting the complications and the importance of early diagnosis. CLINICAL CASE: 53-year-old man with generalized abdominal distension and pain, nausea, vomitin

Regionalization of intestinal microbiota and metabolites in the small intestine of the Bactrian camel.

INTRODUCTION: Peyer's patches (PPs) are crucial antigen-inductive sites of intestinal mucosal immunity. Prior research indicated that, in contrast to other ruminants, PPs in the small intestine of Bactrian camels are found in the duodenum, jejunum, and ileum and display polymorphism. Using this information, we analyzed the microbial and metabolic characteristics in various segments of the Bactrian camel's small intestine to further elucidate how the immune system varies across different regions. METHODS: In this study, the microbiota and metabolite of 36 intestinal mucosal samples, including

Generation of Fetal Intestinal Organoids and Their Maturation into Adult Intestinal Cells.

During embryonic development, the gut tube undergoes massive morphological changes from the simple tube structure composed of the pseudostratified epithelium into the mature intestinal tract composed of the columnar epithelium and characterized by the unique crypt-villus structures. In mice, maturation of fetal gut precursor cells into adult intestinal cells starts around embryonic day (E) 16.5, during which adult intestinal stem cells and their differentiated progenies are generated. In contrast to adult intestinal cells that form budding organoids containing both the crypt-like and villus-li

Intestinal obstruction caused by catheter balloon inflation in the small intestine.

We present a unique case of small bowel obstruction secondary to a urethral catheter balloon. A gentleman at early 80s presented with a blocked catheter, passing a tiny amount of stool through the catheter. Recurrent admissions with a blocked catheter required washouts and exchanges by Urology. 24 hours post-catheter exchange, the patient developed signs and symptoms of SBO, including a distended abdomen, vomiting, and constipation. A CT abdomen/Pelvic revealed small bowel obstruction due to the inflated balloon of the catheter migrating to the small bowel loop. The case was managed by re-siti

Intestinal microbiota and its interaction to intestinal health in nursery pigs.

The intestinal microbiota has gained increased attention from researchers within the swine industry due to its role in promoting intestinal maturation, immune system modulation, and consequently the enhancement of the health and growth performance of the host. This review aimed to provide updated scientific information on the interaction among intestinal microbiota, dietary components, and intestinal health of pigs. The small intestine is a key site to evaluate the interaction of the microbiota, diet, and host because it is the main site for digestion and absorption of nutrients and plays an i

Small Intestinal Diverticulosis: A Rare Cause of Intestinal Perforation Revisited.

Jejunoileal diverticulosis (JID) is a rare and nonspecific symptomatic disease. It is usually an acquired condition associated with false diverticula and integrated with colonic diverticulosis which can be diagnosed incidentally or later with complications. A sixty-nine-year-old male presented with sudden onset generalized abdominal pain. Computed tomography (CT) imaging was suggestive of ileal diverticulitis with localized perforation. The patient was treated conservatively with IV fluids and antibiotics and kept nil per orem for three days and discharged after symptoms subsided. The patient

[Intestinal Rehabilitation in Short Bowel Syndrome and Chronic Intestinal Failure].

Patients with severely orally decompensated malsaborption due to surgical rescetion suffer from short bowel syndrome (SBS). The resultant decrease in intestinal surface area after rescetion of parts of the intestines leads to chronic functional intestinal insufficiency or even complete failure (cIF) which requires parenteral fluid and nutrient restoration for establishment of metabolc stability. Since the introduction of glucagon-like peptide (GLP)-2 analogues such as teduglutide functional rehabilitation of the remaining gastrointestinal tract has become a causal treatment option. Teduglutide…

Management of the Patient with Chronic Intestinal Pseudo-Obstruction and Intestinal Failure.

Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) is a severe form of intestinal dysmotility disorder, characterized by the impairment of gastrointestinal propulsion of the gut content in the absence of fixed occluding lesions. CIPO is a rare disease that can develop in both children and adults. CIPO is classified as primary/idiopathic, when no underlying disorder is demonstrated, or secondary, when related to systemic diseases. Diagnosis relies on the finding of chronic/recurrent obstructive type symptoms with radiological features of dilated intestine with air/fluid levels without any lumen occlu

Segmental dilatation of intestine presenting as partial intestinal obstruction in a child.

Segmental dilatation of the intestine in pediatric age group is a rare entity. Patients usually present with partial intestinal obstruction which may delay surgical decision. Our case was an 18-month-old girl, who presented with partial intestinal obstruction, provisionally diagnosed as a case of Hirschsprung's disease. Diagnostic evaluation with contrast study gave a clue of small intestinal obstruction with a dilated segment.

Outcomes in children with intestinal failure following listing for intestinal transplant.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to describe the population of pediatric patients waiting for intestinal transplant and to evaluate the risk of death or transplant by specific disease states. METHODS: We studied the United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) database (Jan 1,1991 to 5/16/08) for patients 21 years old or younger at first listing for intestinal transplant and examined their age, sex, weight, and diagnoses. Time to list removal was summarized with cumulative incidence curves. Multinomial logistic regression was used to compare relative risk ratios for removal from the list for

Probiotics in intestinal and non-intestinal infectious diseases--clinical evidence.

There is increasing evidence that certain probiotic strains can be useful in improving human health. The use of probiotics has received attention as a natural way of restoring body's normal microbiota, and an alternative and inexpensive way of preventing or treating infectious diseases without side effects. The best-documented clinical application of probiotics comes from trials on the treatment of gastrointestinal infections, mainly infectious diarrhoea. The enhancement of local as well as systemic immune responses by probiotics also offers new opportunities for probiotics in preventing infec

[Inflammatory intestinal diseases and their extra-intestinal manifestations observed at Liban].

101 cases classified as inflammatory bowel disease at the Hôtel-Dieu de France Hospital between 1982 and 1994 were investigated. Files containing a sure diagnosis and complete clinical and biological investigations were included. 65 files were retained for the study: 48 cases had ulcerative colitis (UC), 17 had Crohn's disease (CD). UC averaged 4.7 admissions per 10,000 admissions to the hospital, while CD averaged 1.54 per 10,000. The UC/CD ratio was 2.8 and the Female/Male ratio was 1.4 for UC and 0.9 for CD. Medium follow-up was 6.4 years. 30% of our group was followed for more than 10 year

Intestinal permeability and function in dogs with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth.

Small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) has been reported to occur commonly in dogs with signs of chronic intestinal disease. There are usually few intestinal histological changes, and it is uncertain to what extent bacteria cause mucosal damage. The aim of this study was to apply a differential sugar absorption test for intestinal permeability and function to the objective assessment of intestinal damage in dogs with SIBO. Studies were performed on 63 dogs with signs of chronic small and, or, large bowel disease, in which SIBO (greater than 10(5) total or greater than 10(4) anaerobic col
