Abdominal Complications Related to Ventriculoperitoneal Shunt Placement: A Comprehensive Review of Literature.

Ever since the shunt device became the gold standard treatment for hydrocephalus, complications due to infections and mechanical problems have increased while lives have been saved. In addition, abdominal complications have become an important issue as the peritoneum is now the main place to insert the distal catheter. The most common complications were abdominal pseudocyst, distal catheter migration, inguinal hernia, catheter disconnection, and intestinal obstruction. The pediatric population is more prone to develop most of these complications due to their rapidly growing body, weaker abdomi

Appendicitis and infections of the appendix.

The pathologic spectrum of the acutely inflamed appendix encompasses a wide range of infectious and noninfectious entities. The appendix suffers alone in some of these disorders, and in others may be involved through extension from other areas of the gastrointestinal tract. Although the appendix is the most commonly resected and examined intraabdominal organ, the pathogenesis and etiology of acute nonspecific appendicitis (the most common diagnosis made in this organ) remains enigmatic. This review encompasses the pathology, pathogenesis, and bacteriology of acute appendicitis, as well as cont

Persistent fever after recovery from granulocytopenia in acute leukemia.

We reviewed the hospital admissions of 168 patients with acute leukemia to determine the incidence of persistent fever following recovery from chemotherapy-induced granulocytopenia. This phenomenon was observed during 26 (15.5%) hospital admissions. The microbiologically and/or clinically documented causes identified in 23 instances included viral infection (two patients), perirectal abscess (two patients), Hickman catheter-related bacteremia (two patients), intraabdominal infection (four patients), and nine fungal infections (five resolving pneumonia, one disseminated candidiasis, three focal

Risk factors and prognosis of gastric stasis, a crucial problem after laparoscopic pylorus-preserving gastrectomy for early middle-third gastric cancer.

BACKGROUND: Pylorus-preserving gastrectomy (PPG) is a function-preserving procedure for cT1N0 gastric cancer located in the middle-third of stomach, which is currently performed through a laparoscopic approach (LPPG). PPG is sometimes associated with a crucial problem during the early postoperative course, designated gastric stasis. However, information regarding gastric stasis remains to be fully elucidated. METHODS: The study included 897 patients who underwent LPPG between 2005 and 2017. Early postoperative gastric stasis (E-stasis) was defined when the following conditions were fulfilled:

Invasive Candida in the abdomen: how to differentiate infection from colonization.

INTRODUCTION: Intra-abdominal candidiasis (IAC) is a serious complication in critically ill patients, particularly after abdominal surgery or trauma. Differentiating Candida colonization from invasive infection is crucial, as misdiagnosis can lead to inappropriate antifungal use, increased resistance, and worse outcomes. However, IAC remains underrecognized due to the limitations of conventional culture-based diagnostics. Relevant literature was identified through a non-systematic search of the PubMed database. AREAS COVERED: This review highlights the challenges in diagnosing and managing IA

Predictive Role of Changes in Presepsin and Early Sepsis in ICU Patients After Abdominal Surgery.

INTRODUCTION: It is difficult to identify early sepsis after surgery due to postoperative inflammatory reactions. Presepsin, a glycoprotein expressed on the surface of innate immune cells, is produced during bacterial phagocytosis, and its level increases in the bloodstream of sepsis patients. We aimed to measure the differences between the diagnostic ability of presepsin and other biomarkers to identify postoperative sepsis and septic shock in acute period after major abdominal surgery. METHODS: From March 2020 to March 2021, patients who underwent surgery due to intra-abdominal infection we

Pylephlebitis and Right-Sided Endocarditis: A Rare Complication of an Intra-abdominal Infection.

Right-sided infective endocarditis is less common than left-sided endocarditis and can be a difficult clinical diagnosis. The presence of intracardiac devices is a major risk factor. The presentation is less clear than left-sided forms because of the presence of respiratory symptoms and the absence of systemic embolization. Pylephlebitis, or septic thrombosis of the portal vein, is a serious infectious condition that often delays diagnosis. It is a complication of intraabdominal or pelvic infections. Streptococcus gallolyticus (S. gallolyticus) can cause infective endocarditis and is associate
