OBJECTIVE: To analyze the genetic features of melanocytomas and melanomas of the anterior uvea and assess the value of molecular testing for diagnosis and prognostication.
DESIGN: Retrospective case-control study.
SUBJECTS: Patients with melanocytoma (n = 16) and melanoma (n = 19) of the anterior uvea.
METHODS: Targeted next-generation sequencing was performed on formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded tumor tissue from anterior uveal melanocytic tumors and correlated with clinicopathologic features.

Retinoblastoma and congenital ocular abnormalities rarely coexist. The appearance of an intraocular tumor in a child with preexisting leukokoria may make the diagnosis of retinoblastoma more challenging. This report describes a unique case of unilateral congenital uveal coloboma and ipsilateral retinoblastoma in a patient with no family history of either abnormality and normal cytogenetic analysis.

Purpose: To assess the late complications after the I-125 brachytherapy of uveal melanoma. Material and methods: 129 patients (71 women – 55%, and 58 men – 45%) treated at the Department of Ophthalmology and Ocular Oncology of the University Hospital in Krakow between January 2005 and December 2009 were evaluated. Aniridia occurs as a phenotypically heterogeneous condition which may be inherited as an autosomal dominant disorder or as part of several systemic syndromes. It has been linked with the loci of chromosomes 1 and 2 and associated with the deletion of the p-13 band of chromosome 11. Aniridia may occur in a highly penetrant form in association with other ocular abnormalities with poor vision or in a more variable form with good vision. The recognition of a child with sporadic aniridia should alert physicians to the increased risk of development of Wilms' tumor.

Genetic analysis of the cells of a WAGR patient (W, predisposition to Wilms tumor; A, aniridia; G, genitourinary abnormalities; R, mental retardation), bearing a partial deletion of band 11p13, was performed with biochemical and antigenic 11p markers by using gene dosage, somatic hybridization, molecular hybridization, and indirect immunofluorescence techniques. These studies allowed the regional assignment of the gene for catalase, which is linked to the Wilms tumor locus, between MIC4 and MIC11, two loci encoding for membrane antigens previously mapped to band 11p13.

PURPOSE: To report a case where iris metastasis was the presenting sign of hitherto undiagnosed non-small cell lung carcinoma. The diagnostic approach and patient management are discussed.
