Total DNAs obtained from Japanese patients with molluscum contagiosum (MC) were analyzed by agarose gel electrophoresis after digestion with Bam HI, Hind III or Cla I restriction enzymes, which revealed the presence of four different cleavage patterns of MC virus (MCV) DNAs. The comparison with previously reported MCV types clarified that two of them were identical with MCV-1 and -2, respectively. The other two isolates were considered as yet unrecognized types and named MCV-3 and -4, respectively.

Fifty-four cases of glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD) deficiency have so far been reported in Japan. Among them, 21 G6PD variants have been characterized. Nineteen out of the 21 variants were characterized in our laboratory and G6PD Heian and "Kyoto" by others. The Intractable Liver Diseases Study Group of Japan, supported by the Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare, established novel diagnostic criteria for "acute liver failure" in 2011. In these criteria, patients without histological findings of hepatitis are included in the disease entity of "acute liver failure", as in Europe and the USA. In this report, classification criteria for the etiologies of "acute liver failure" in Japan are proposed.

CONCLUSION: Similarly to almost all delayed endolymphatic hydrops (DEH) cases with both precedent sudden deafness and mumps deafness, two-thirds of DEH cases with precedent deafness of unknown cause with onset in early childhood developed DEH symptoms within 40 years after the precedent deafness. In spite of the diagnosis of precedent deafness, viral labyrinthitis may build up the late endolymphatic hydrops in most DEH cases up to four decades.

Two rages of epidemic of aseptic meningitis (AM) due to echovirus 30 (E30) in Japan were analyzed with respect to two sources of information, AM incidence and E30 isolation, both gathered through the National Epidemiological Surveillance of Infectious Diseases. Although cerebral syphilitic gummas are generally considered to be rare manifestations of tertiary syphilis, many reports exist of early cerebral syphilitic gumma. Our finding of cerebral syphilitic gumma in an HIV-negative man within 5 months after syphilis infection suggests that this condition should be considered in syphilis patients who have neurologic symptoms.

Minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS), first introduced in the 1990s, was originally performed via partial sternotomy, the subxyphoid approach, and right anterolateral thoracotomy. Over the past 20 years, MICS procedures have progressed from mere alternatives to standard full sternotomy to endoscope-assisted and then to totally endoscopic open-heart procedures.
