Knuckle pads--a forgotten skin condition: report of a case and review of the literature.

A 12-year-old boy presented with knuckle pads, palmar keratoderma, and hand eczema. Since Morginson's description of knuckle pads associated with other dermatoses almost forty years ago, little attention has been given to this disorder. We describe a case and review some of the clinical aspects of this disorder.

[Problems in surgery of the sole of the foot].

The structure of the weight-bearing plantar skin and the subcutaneous cushion is adapted to mechanical loads of 3-10 kp/cm2 under walking conditions. Such loads, however, are only tolerated when compensated by constant alternation of loaded points. If the surgical therapy with free skin grafts or pedicled flaps does not take into account the vascular and neural architecture of the plantar skin, healing without problems may result--but only for a short time. As a rule, such grafting is later followed by painful keratotic lesions or non-healing "trophic" ulcers, which are caused by loss of sensi

[Porokeratosis palmaris et plantaris disseminata with squamous cell carcinoma].

A 53-year-old man presented porokeratosis palmaris, plantaris et disseminata with some features (exacerbation of lesions, in the sun light, zosteriform fashion of them on the trunk and extremities) distinctive of other variants of porokeratosis. Lately, four squamous cell carcinomas had arisen on the areas involved by disease. Histologic study of porokeratosis lesions showed epidermal changes typical of the disease ("cornoid lamella"), but also a mild disorder of malpighian stratification. Neoplasms were removed surgically and the patient was given etretinate orally (75 mg/day for a week, 50 m

Unusual presentation of porokeratosis palmaris, plantaris et disseminata.

Porokeratosis plantaris, palmaris et disseminata is an autosomal dominant genodermatosis characterized by multiple lesions on the palms and soles, and later on other areas, both sun-exposed and non-sun-exposed. We report a 66-year-old man with porokeratosis plantaris, palmaris et disseminata whose disease had an unusual evolution. To our knowledge this is the first case of the disease in which the lesions first appeared on the trunk and extremities and later involved the palms and soles.

Keratosis palmaris et plantaris with clinodactyly. A distinct autosomal dominant genodermatosis.

Keratosis palmaris et plantaris and clinodactyly of the 5th finger was diagnosed in 11 members of a family with a typical pattern of autosomal dominant inheritance. It is concluded that both traits are probably the expression of a single mutant gene (p less than 0.001).

Sarcoidosis in a child, presenting as an erythroderma with keratotic spines and palmar pits.

A case of sarcoidosis with generalized erythroderma, exfoliation and micropapule formation in a 6-year-old boy is presented. Follicular spiny keratoses, resembling those seen in pityriasis rubra pilaris, and palmo-plantar pitting were among the other extraordinary features in this case. The epidermis overlying the widespread sarcoid granulomata showed parakeratosis, lymphocytic infiltration and degeneration of the basal layer.

Phenotypic spectrum of autosomal recessive Keratitis-Ichthyosis-Deafness Syndrome (KIDAR) due to mutations in AP1B1.

Inborn errors in copper metabolism result in a diverse set of abnormalities such as Wilson disease and MEDNIK syndrome. Homozygous pathogenic variants in AP1B1 lead to KIDAR (Keratitis-Ichthyosis-Deafness Syndrome). The main phenotypic features of KIDAR are ichthyosis, keratitis, erythroderma, and progressive hearing loss accompanied by developmental delay and failure to thrive. Herein, we describe a six-and-a-half-year-old boy with KIDAR caused by a novel pathogenic variant in AP1B1 (NM_001127.4:c.1263C > A, p.Tyr421*). The proband presented with ichthyosis, erythroderma, palmoplantar keratod

Using a Distant Abdominal Skin Flap to Treat Digital Constriction Bands: A Case Report for Vohwinkel Syndrome.

In this study, a Vohwinkel syndrome case is presented where in 5th digit constriction bands in the right hand were reconstructed using a distant abdominal skin flap. Vohwinkel syndrome, or keratoderma hereditarium mutilans, is a rare, autosomal dominant genetic skin condition that causes palmoplantar hyperkeratosis and constricts finger and/or toe bands. In a typical manifestation, the finger and toe constriction bands lead to progressive strangulation and autoamputation, which requires immediate clinical treatment. Topical keratolytics and systemic retinoids have been used to treat hyperkerat

A case of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy-Naxos disease.

We present a case of arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy (ARVC)-Naxos disease. The patient is 21-year-old male with no history of previous heart disease admitted in a private hospital for rhythm disorder in heart. The condition was diagnosed as ventricular tachycardia (VT) and was treated with cardioversion. The patient was referred to our hospital for further evaluation. On examination patient had palmoplantar keratoderma, wooly hair, and dystrophic nails. The cardiovascular system examination was clinically normal. His electrocardiogram showed epsilon wave in lead V1; echocardiog

[Botulinum toxin in disabling dermatological diseases].

Botulinum toxin could represent nowadays a new treatment modality especially for cutaneous conditions in course of which conventional treatments remain unsuccessful. Besides palmar and plantar hyperhidrosis, botulinum toxin has demonstrated efficacy in different conditions associated with hyperhidrosis, such as dyshidrosis, multiple eccrine hidrocystomas, hidradenitis suppurativa, Frey syndrome, but also in different conditions worsened by hyperhidrosis such as Hailey-Hailey disease, Darier disease, inversed psoriasis, aquagenic palmoplantar keratoderma, pachyonychia congenital. Moreover, diff

No exonic mutations at GJB2, GJB3, GJB4, GJB6, ARS (Component B), and LOR genes responsible for a Chinese patient affected by progressive symmetric erythrokeratodermia with pseudoainhum.

OBJECTIVE: Progressive symmetric erythrokeratodermia (PSEK) is characterized by symmetric and growing erythematous hyperkeratotic patches over the body shortly after birth, particularly trunk and limbs, the buttocks, and the face, sometimes together with palmoplantar keratoderma (PPK). The GJB2, GJB3, GJB4, GJB6, ARS (Component B), and LOR gene mutation might contribute to PSEK manifestation. This study aimed to identify sequence alteration of these genes in a Chinese PSEK patient with pseudoainhum. METHODS: Genomic DNA was purified from the patient's peripheral blood. Mutation analysis of ta

Personal observation of skin disorders in malnutrition.

This is a description of some unknown skin disorders found by a physician inmate in a concentration camp, 1958 to 1962. After prolonged semistarvation and ultraheavy physical labor, skin lesions developed among the inmates including cutaneous pigmentation overlying bony prominence, buccal membrane pigmentation, palmoplantar keratoderma with fissures, palmar crease clefts, nail layering, intra-nail hemorrhage, and so on. These lesions responded dramatically to nutrition therapy, including dietary improvement, yeast administration, or thiamin injection. Thiamin deficiency was confirmed to be one

Noncompaction and dilated cardiomyopathy in carvajal syndrome.

INTRODUCTION: Carvajal syndrome, a rare autosomal recessive disorder caused by mutations in the DSP gene, is characterised by woolly hair, palmoplantar keratoderma, and left ventricular dilated cardiomyopathy. Although less frequently reported, noncompaction cardiomyopathy can co-occur, further complicating the clinical picture. Early diagnosis and management are crucial due to the high risk of progressive heart failure and sudden cardiac death in affected individuals. CASE REPORT: A 13-year-old male with autism presented with a 1.5-month history of persistent cough and worsening clinical sym
