Extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy treatment for calculi of the upper urinary tract was performed on 4 children between 6 and 13 years old. The patients were treated under general anesthesia with Lithostar. Good fragmentation was achieved in all cases. No undue side effects or complications were encountered in the cases. We conclude that extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy is a safe and effective method of treating renal and ureteral calculi in children.

The Siemens Lithostar lithotriptor was used to treat 20 children (4 to 17 years old) with renal or ureteral calculi. Two patients had bilateral renal and 2 had ureteral calculi. Of 34 calculi treated 47% were in the renal pelvis, 29% in the lower calix, 12% in the upper calix, 3% in the middle calix and 9% in the upper ureter. Stone size ranged from 2 X 2 to 40 X 20 mm. and averaged 10 X 7 mm. Of the children 60% were treated while they were under neuroleptic anesthesia. No major complications were encountered. The 3-month rate free of stones after 1 treatment was 60% and increased to 80% with

Extracorporeal shock waves lithotripsy is a well established procedure for the treatment of renal and ureteral calculi. From January 1985 to December 1987, 1034 patients underwent 1152 treatments with the Dornier HM3 lithotripter; from January 1988 and December 1988, 466 patients underwent 566 treatments with the modified Dornier HM3. Treatments with the original HM3 were performed mainly under general anaesthesia (97%). Only 2.4% of modified Dornier HM3 treatments have been performed under general anaesthesia; the 97.6% were treated under a combination of anxiolytic and analgesic drugs. An av

ESWL has been accepted as a method for treatment of urinary tract calculosis. In most cases with urinary tract calculi, the method has replaced the classic surgical procedure. Staghorn calculi are still too large to be simply managed with classic procedure; however, they may be successfully disintegrated (crushed) with the available lithotriptors, particularly with second generation lithotriptors such as LITHOSTAR. Technological innovations which appeared during the last two decades have induced sudden changes in the treatment of urinary tract calculosis. They were enabled by extracorporeal sh

Emphysematous pyelonephritis (EPN) is a rare, life-threatening necrotizing renal infection characterized by gas formation within the renal parenchyma, collecting system, or perirenal tissues. Its occurrence in a pelvic ectopic kidney is exceptionally uncommon. We report the case of a 56-year-old man with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes mellitus who presented with fever, pelvic pain, and septic shock. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated a left pelvic ectopic kidney with multiple renal calculi and an obstructing ureteral calculus, with gas confined to the collecting system, consistent with H

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the surgical anatomy of the kidney collecting system through a narrative review of the literature, highlighting its importance during diagnosis and its approach during surgical procedures for the treatment of renal stones.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: We carried out a review about the anatomy of the kidney collecting system. We analyzed papers published in the past 40 years in the databases Pubmed, Embase and Scielo, and we included only papers in English and excluded case reports, editorials and opinions of specialists.
RESULTS: Renal collecting system could be divided in fo

BACKGROUND: Ureteral injuries are not very common and can occur after many surgical procedures. Kidney salvage is desirable. Renal autotransplantation is a final option for some cases. In this case, we report an autotransplantation of the kidney after an iatrogenic injury of the ureter with totally extraperitoneal approach.
CASE REPORT: A 41 years old female underwent left endoscopic ureterolithotomy with holmium laser for ureteral calculi. An iatrogenic ureteral injury, probably ureteral avulsion, occurred. After multiple interventions, she referred to us with a nephrostomy tube. Imaging was

Causes for acquired unilateral obstruction of the ureter are numerous: calculi, infections, blood clots and tumors are the most common underlying pathologies. Hematologic tumors with initial clinical manifestation in the lower urinary tract are rare. Primary localization of plasmocytoma has been described in kidney, bladder and urethra. Herein, we describe the first manifestation of a primary solitary extramedullary plasmacytoma of the ureter. The tumor was discovered upon diagnostic workup of gross hematuria and asymptomatic hydronephrosis. Thus far, after radical surgery the patient remains

After studying two rural communities with varing endemicity of urinary schistosomiasis by total cross-sectional population survey, a stratified sample was obtained using defined criteria. Plain X-ray abdomen and intravenous pyelogram were carried out on the sample. Findings on plain X-ray of the abdomen, using the usual parameters of psoas and kidney shadows in the Nigerian, indicate that the two communities studied are similar but urinary calculi and urinary tract distortion are significantly more prominent in the community with the higher endemicity of urinary schistosomiasis.

Crossed renal ectopia is a rare congenital anomaly, where one of the kidneys crosses the midline and lies opposite to the site of its normal ureteral insertion. Ninety percent of crossed ectopic kidneys are fused to their ipsilateral uncrossed kidney. Crossed renal ectopia without fusion is rare. We present the case of a 53-year-old male with an unusual incidental finding of crossed nonfused renal ectopia, with the left ectopic kidney lying anterior to the right kidney without fusion. The ectopic kidney had dual arterial supply: one from the aorta and another from the right renal artery. It al

Neglected renal calculi can lead to a variety of complications secondary to obstruction and infection. Pyonephrosis arising in this scenario often presents as a urological emergency and requires urgent surgical intervention. In rare circumstances, when left unaided, the kidney is unable to contain the infection and spread of pus may occur into the surrounding spaces like the retroperitoneum and the peritoneum. We report a very unusual complication of pyonephrosis leading to a hepatic abscess. We believe this is the first reported case of an acute renal infection due to stone disease ascending

An 18-year-old male intact white Tiger (Panthera tigris) was euthanized after a clinical diagnosis of severe renal failure. Postmortem macroscopic examination of the kidneys revealed unilateral hydronephrosis with renal calculi and bilateral cortical and medullary fibrosis and papillary coagulation necrosis. Interestingly, multiple large persistent metanephric ducts were found at the corticomedullary junctions accompanied by marked interstitial fibrosis, tubular atrophy, and lymphoplasmacytic interstitial nephritis. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of persistent metanephric du

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Urinary biomarkers such as neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL), kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) and N-acetyl-B-D-glucosamindase (NAG) are recognised as being useful for the detection of kidney tubular damage but their role in the diagnosis and prognosis of kidney stone disease (KSD) is still unknown. To clarify this, we performed a systematic review of literature in accordance with Cochrane methodology from inception to September 2020.
RECENT FINDINGS: Twelve studies were included and a variety of urinary biomarkers (KIM-1, NGAL, NAG, proteins/peptides, cytok

A 66-year-old woman had a 22 mm right kidney stone accompanied with a horseshoe kidney. The size of this stone had been increasing gradually from 7 mm to 22 mm during the past 5 years. Although apparent pelviuretic junction stenosis could not be identified by intravenous urography, external pelvis was dilated in both kidneys. Complete excretion of fragmented stones by extracorporeal shockwave lithotripsy seemed to be difficult because impaired urinary passage from the renal pelvis to the ureter was suspected. Percutaneous nephrolithotomy was also difficult due to malrotation of the pelvic-cali

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively evaluate the safety and efficacy of flexible ureteroscopy (FURS) in combination with holmium laser lithotripsy for the treatment of bilateral upper urinary calculi.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The stone-free status was defined as the absence of any stones or asymptomatic status, or the presence of clinically insignificant residual fragments <4 mm, and was assessed by plain kidney, ureter, and bladder X-ray. The operative time, stone-free rates (SFRs), serum creatinine (SCr), and complications were recorded.
RESULTS: During the operation, there was no bleeding, ureter

INTRODUCTION: Urolithiasis in renal allografts is relatively rare with an incidence of 0.17-4.40%. It is nonetheless an important issue, as there is a risk of obstruction, sepsis and even loss of the renal allograft. The management of stones in renal allografts remains challenging because of the anatomy, the renal denervation and the use of immunosuppressive medication.
CASE PRESENTATION: This report discusses the ex-vivo treatment of asymptomatic nephrolithiasis in a living donor kidney allograft. A CT abdomen revealed a lower pole stone (5.9 × 5.5 × 5.0 mm; 920 HU) in the right kidney of th

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of hydronephrotic ectopic kidney with lithiasis and pelvic localization, its diagnostic aspects and surgical treatment.
METHODS/RESULTS: A 39-year-old male consulted at the emergency services for low abdominal pain. Physical examination disclosed a hypogastric mass. Patient evaluation by ultrasound, intravenous urography and pyelography revealed a right hydronephrotic ectopic kidney with lithiasis and pelvic localization. Nephrectomy via a right infraumbilical incision was performed.
CONCLUSION: Pelvic renal ectopy is uncommon, but not rare in our area. This anoma
