The scientific literature referring to tumors in African pygmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) is expanding, enhanced by an increased lifespan under human care. This study compiles the clinical records and pathologic findings in a 2-year and 7-month-old male African pygmy hedgehog (Atelerix albiventris) with a metastatic giant-cell renal sarcoma. Metastases to the lungs, retroperitoneum, lymph nodes, pericardium, and mediastinal adipose tissue were observed. Immunohistochemical assessment with a panel of 11 antibodies (cytokeratins [AE1/AE3, CK19, and CK20], vimentin, thyroid transcription fac

Epithelioid angiomyolipoma (EAML) of the kidney is an uncommon neoplasm with malignant potential. It can occur sporadically or be associated with tuberous sclerosis. EAML is a monotypic variant of angiomyolipoma (AML), which is classified as neoplasm of the perivascular epithelioid cell or perivascular epithelioid cell tumor. Due to its epithelioid nature and paucity of fat components, unlike classic AML, which has abundant adipose tissue with characteristic features on CT scans, it is difficult to distinguish EAML from renal cell carcinoma and fat-poor AML on CT or MRI preoperatively, which m

Neuroblastoma is the most common solid malignant neoplasm in the paediatric age group; accounting for 7% of all childhood malignancies, but neuroblastoma in adult, is a rare occurrence, finding mention in aeons of medical literature with an overall incidence of 1 in 10 million adults/year. We report the case of a 24-year-old male patient presenting with the complaints of progressive abdominal distention of 2 months duration. Multiple Detector Computed Tomography (MD-CT) of abdomen revealed a huge enhancing mass in the retroperitoneum abutting the left kidney, and a subsequent CT-guided biopsy

A primary neoplasm of the right adrenal gland in a 4-year-old boy was discovered after the patient developed bowel obstruction following an appendectomy. Until the histologic examination, the tumor was thought to be a neuroblastoma. However, the intra-adrenal tumor was composed of blastematous nodules, primitive tubules, and glomeruloid structures whose overall composition resembled a Wilms' tumor. Other than a single focus of mucinous glands, the tumor lacked the range of somatic tissue types of a teratoma. Approximately 50 cases of putative extrarenal Wilms' tumor have been reported. The ret

Infection of susceptible chickens with avian leukosis virus (ALV) results in the development of bursal lymphomas. These neoplasms develop within the bursa of Fabricius following a latent period of several months. The response exhibited by two previously uncharacterized chicken lines to ALV infection has been examined. The two lines, Hyline SC and FP, responded differently to ALV infection. During a 24-week period following intravenous ALV infection, 27 of 50 SC chickens developed bursal lymphomas. No lymphomas developed in the 36 FP chickens tested. A majority of the SC chickens that developed

An unusual case is reported of the rare Castleman's disease localized in the retroperitoneal area in an elderly asymptomatic patient. A similar benign lymphoadenopathy of unknown etiology is generally found in the mediastinum and interests just one lymph-node that results abnormally hyperplastic. Histologically, most cases are of the hyaline-vascular type and much more rarely of the plasmacell variant. After a careful review of the literature the anatomical, pathological and clinical characteristics, the main etiopathogenetics hypotheses and diagnostic criteria are explained. The particular si

OBJECTIVES: Rosai-Dorfman disease (RDD) is one of 3 major types of histiocytosis, along with Erdheim-Chester disease and Langerhans cell histiocytosis. While historically, RDD was considered a benign self-limited condition, current data show MAPK/ERK pathway mutations in 30% to 50% of cases, indicative of a clonal process. Rosai-Dorfman disease was incorporated as a histiocytic neoplasm in the fifth edition of the World Health Organization classification of hematopoietic tumors and the International Consensus Classification.
METHODS: We discuss the diagnosis of RDD using 2 illustrative cases,

Post-transplant patients reportedly have a higher risk of de novo neoplasms. However, intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) of the native pancreas after pancreas transplantation (PTx) has not been well investigated. The choice of treatment, especially invasive treatment, for de novo neoplasms in transplant patients should consider their impaired immunity. In this context, we present a case of IPMN developing in the native pancreas of a PTx patient. A 53-year-old man underwent a follow-up abdominal computed tomography scan 6 years after a simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplant for typ

INTRODUCTION: NeuroEndocrine Neoplasms (NENs) are rare and can originate from any epithelial organ. We describe a very rare case of retroperitoneal metastasis from a non-functioning neuroendocrine tumor of the ethmoid region and focus on the various issues related to NENs, from their nosological classification up to the most recent acquisitions in the diagnostic and therapeutic field.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A woman presented with a mass in the right retroperitoneal area that infiltrated liver and kidney. The anamnestic data showed a previous undifferentiated small cell tumor of the left ethmoi

Two guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus) were presented with a clinical history of a chronic, unresponsive skin disorder with scaling, itching and alopecia. After clinical differential diagnoses (e. g. ectoparasitosis, dermatomycosis, endocrinopathy or allergy) had been ruled out, a skin biopsy revealed an epitheliotropic lymphoma (Mycosis fungoides). The pathohistological examination of the skin showed focal intraepidermal accumulations of tumorous lymphocytes also known as pautrier microabscesses. A full necropsy displayed also metastases in lymph nodes, and additionally tumor cells within skeletal

Phyllodes tumors are rare breast neoplasms. Surgery is the treatment of choice. The role of postoperative radiotherapy and chemotherapy is still under dispute, as there are no equivocal prognostic factors. Treatment failure results in the occurrence of distant metastasis-mainly to the lungs, bones, liver, and brain. We have described the case of a woman with a malignant phyllodes tumor of the breast that was surgically treated. She did not receive adjuvant therapy because there is no consensus on the role of postoperative chemotherapy and radiotherapy. One year following the surgery, the patie

A 20-year-old neutered male ring-tailed lemur (Lemur catta) diagnosed with an intrathoracic mass died during surgical excision. Morphological characteristics of the mass during necropsy were consistent with a mediastinal abscess in the left hemithorax. Histological examination identified a disseminated histiocytic sarcoma involving spleen, kidneys, multiple lymph nodes, diaphragm and parietal pleura, as well as a concurrent follicular lymphoma in a separate lymph node. A mixed metastatic infiltrate composed of both neoplasms was found within the capsule of the intrathoracic abscess. Immunohist

Tubulocystic Renal Cell Carcinoma (TC-RCC) and Polycythemia Vera (PV) are both infrequent medical conditions. TC-RCC was recognized as a distinct subtype of kidney cancer by the World Health Organization in 2016, while PV is a rare myeloproliferative neoplasm distinguished by the excessive production of red blood cells. The coexistence of these two conditions is exceptionally uncommon and lacks comprehensive documentation. This study presents a case report of a 35-year-old male patient who has been diagnosed with PV for the past 20 years. The patient underwent a radical nephrectomy to remove t

INTRODUCTION: Paraneoplastic syndromes are frequent in patients with renal cell carcinoma. Dermatomyositis is an idiopathic inflammatory myopathy that may be associated with neoplasms. This case aims to describe the rare association of dermatomyositis with renal cell carcinoma and to increase clinical suspicion of this neoplasm when systemic rheumatologic symptoms are present.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old female developed severe rheumatologic symptoms (progressive muscle weakness, heliotrope rash, and Gottron's papules). Clinical and laboratory findings indicated dermatomyositis. During t

BACKGROUND: Pancreatic cancer is associated with a dismal prognosis, with ductal adenocarcinoma being the most common form of primary neoplasm diagnosed. Clear cell carcinoma is usually associated with kidney, ovarian or bladder malignancy but rarely associated with pancreatic malignancy. According to the WHO classification, primary clear cell adenocarcinoma of the pancreas is a rare "miscellaneous" carcinoma, and to date few cases have been reported in the literature.
CASE: A 63-year old female who presented to a metropolitan hospital in Australia with abdominal pain suggestive of pancreatit

We present 5 paratesticular tumors, which manifested ovarian-type stroma and various serous müllerian epithelial structures including serous fallopian-like epithelium and proliferations closely mimicking cystic serous borderline tumors of the ovary. In addition, 3 of the tumors in our series revealed a solid epithelial component, which was morphologically and immunohistochemically similar to so called "female adnexal tumor of probable wolffian origin," which is a rare neoplasm described so far only in the female genital tract, retroperitoneum, and the pelvic cavity. In analogy with mixed epith

An inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare neoplasm with an unclear origin that can arise anywhere on the body. It contains spindle cells (myofibroblasts) with different inflammatory elements. Primary IMT of the kidney is a clinically rare disease and is difficult to differentiate from other renal malignancies. We reported a 49-year-old male who presented with right flank pain in the past year. A computed tomography scan showed a mixed density with slight heterogeneous enhancement mass in the upper pole of the right kidney, two small hypodense nodules invading the liver, and another

Papillary architecture is rare in FLCN-mutated renal epithelial neoplasms in Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome. We report a papillary-predominant FLCN-mutated renal epithelial neoplasm in a 79-year-old woman with known Birt-Hogg-Dubé syndrome and a pathogenic germline FLCN frameshift mutation, who presented with bilateral renal masses and underwent right partial nephrectomy. Gross examination revealed a 2.5 cm well-circumscribed yellow mass confined to the kidney (pT1a). Histologically, the tumor demonstrated predominantly papillary architecture with focal cystic change and rare nested oncocytic cells a

BACKGROUND: High-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (HAMN) is an uncommon epithelial neoplasm of the appendix, and it is a median risk lesion that can be placed between benign low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) and malignant adenocarcinoma. The diagnosis can be both incidental during surveillance imaging or clinically similar to acute appendicitis, which presents as pain in the right lower quadrant, or local pressure on adjacent organs. It carries the potential to progress to cancer if left untreated. Our aim is to review the literature and to report this rare tumor with outlining

Ossifying fibromyxoid tumors (OFMTs) are rare mesenchymal neoplasms which typically present in the superficial subcutaneous tissues and have not been reported to arise in visceral organs. We now report 4 molecularly confirmed cases of OFMT involving the genitourinary tract. All patients were males, ranging in age from 20 to 66 years (mean: 43 y). One case each arose in the kidney, ureter, perirenal soft tissue, and penis. All neoplasms demonstrated bland epithelioid to spindled cells set in a variably fibrous to fibromyxoid stroma, and only 1 had a peripheral shell of lamellar bone. All cases
