The clinical presentation of toxocariasis, a zoonotic parasitosis transmitted from dogs and cats to humans, can be very diverse, which is one of the reasons why Toxocara-related disease may go unnoticed. This paper gives a brief summary of the various clinical presentations (covert/common toxocariasis, visceral larva migrans, ocular toxocariasis and neurotoxocariasis), diagnostic and differential-diagnostic considerations as well as treatment and prevention. In brief, the diagnosis of human toxocariasis relies mainly on patient data, anamnestic information, symptoms, eosinophil count and total…

In this review we discuss our recently results showing interleukin 5 (IL-5) involvement in eosinophil migration and in the maintenance of eosinophilia in blood, bone marrow, lung and peritoneal cavity, in a visceral larva migrans syndrome model using guinea-pigs infected with Toxocara canis. We also describe the sequential release of TNF-alpha and IL-8 during the course of infection. Finally we propose a biological role for IL-5, at least in our model, as a modulator of IL-8 release and secretion.

Ectoparasitic infestations are highly prevalent in resource-poor populations throughout the world and are associated with considerable morbidity. Reliable data on the epidemiology, immunology, and therapy of ectoparasitic infestations and on the biology of the parasites remain scarce. The control of parasitic skin diseases, such as scabies, pediculosis, tungiasis, myiasis, and cutaneous larva migrans in endemic areas remains a challenge. Using appropriate study designs, it is imperative to increase further the knowledge on the various aspects of the parasites and the infestations they cause.

Several cases of visceral larva migrans syndrome in children led to an investigation of the ova of Toxocara spp. and other species in stool specimens from stray dogs and cats in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Fecal samples from 474 stray dogs and 299 stray cats were examined. Ova of Toxocara canis or cati were present in stools from 26.6% of the dogs and 25.1% of the cats. In dogs the prevalence of Toxocara canis was noticeably greater in puppies (56.1%) than in mature animals (11.9%).

Gnathostoma doloresi parasitizes the gastric wall of wild (boars) and domestic (pigs) swine (Sus scrofa). Its larvae cause cutaneous larva migrans in humans. Amphibians, reptiles and a freshwater fish are infected with the advanced 3rd stage larvae. Prevalence of G. doloresi larvae were surveyed in several snakes, especially in a common frog-eating snake (Rhabdophis tigrinus). All species of snakes examined were infected with G. doloresi larvae suggesting that snakes are important reservoir hosts. Prevalence of G. doloresi larvae in frog-eating snakes was lower than that found in mammal-eating…

CONTEXT: Toxocara canis is a parasite known to cause visceral larva migrans. The infection rarely affects the central nervous system but there have been several reports of myelitis caused by visceral larva migrans due to Toxocara canis. In previous reported cases, the lesions were located in the thoracic or cervical spinal cord. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of a lesion involving the lumbosacral region.
FINDINGS: A 60-year-old man developed weakness and dysesthesia in the lower limbs. The symptoms resolved spontaneously, but recurred after five months. One month later…

Lyme disease is the most common vector-borne illness in the United States. It is caused by the spirochete Borrelia burgdorferi, which is transmitted by the deer tick. Deer ticks have a four-stage life cycle (egg, larva, nymph, and adult), and nymphal ticks transmit B. burgdorferi to humans more frequently than adult ticks. Transmission of this spirochete typically requires a minimum of 24 to 48 hours of tick attachment. Early stages of Lyme disease are characterized by a hallmark rash, erythema migrans. The overall risk of acquiring Lyme disease is low in a person who has a deer tick bite. If

Rituals are an integral part of human life but a wide range of rituals (both religious and non-religious), from self-flagellation to blood brotherhood to ritual sprinkling of holy water, have been associated with transmission of infections. These infections include angiostrongyliasis, anthrax, brucellosis, cholera, COVID-19, cutaneous larva migrans, Ebola, hepatitis viruses, herpes simplex virus, HIV, human T-cell leukemia virus (HTLV), kuru, Mycobacterium bovis, Naegleria fowleri meningoencephalitis, orf, rift valley fever, and sporotrichosis. Education and community engagement are important …

Baylisascaris procyonis is a zoonotic nematode whose main definitive host is the raccoon, an invasive carnivore in Europe introduced from the United States. B. procyonis causes larva migrans with poor prognosis in humans. This parasite was unexpectedly detected in France for the first time upon molecular screening of wolf faecal samples. Because no patent infection was found, the wolf cannot be considered as a definitive host. This discovery of B. procyonis in France nonetheless raises questions about the parasite status of the expanding raccoon populations in the country, which will be invest…

Toxocariasis is an extensive helminthic infection that leads to visceral larva migrans in humans. A 2.5-year-old girl referred for abdominal mass. She had history of pharyngitis for two weeks. There were no other symptoms. Abdominal examination revealed an irregular solid mass in right lower quadrant (RLQ). Abdominal ultrasonography revealed an echohetrogenic large mass in RLQ, liver, and retroperitoneal area. Abdominal CT scan showed a huge mass. At laparotomy a large retroperitoneal mass that involved right liver lobe, bladder, ileocecal valve, small and large intestines was found. At histop…

Skin lesions provide an important clue to the diagnoses of many infections in returned travelers. New information related to epidemiology, recognition, diagnosis, or management is described for the systemic infections--dengue fever, several of the rickettsial infections, African trypanosomiasis, and coccidioidomycosis. Many pathogens cause focal skin findings. Recent findings are presented for cutaneous leishmaniasis, Buruli ulcer, gnatho-stomiasis, cutaneous larva migrans, myiasis, tungiasis, and scabies. This paper describes the most common skin problems in returning travelers and outlines t…

Several intestinal helminths may involve the skin. In cutaneous larva migrans and enterobiasis this is often the only organ involved, whereas hookworm and trichinosis are characterized by multisystem disease. The clinical spectrum of strongyloidiasis may range from a low-grade chronic dermatitis to a fulminant, often fatal, hyperinfection syndrome in the immunocompromised host. In the absence of recent breakthroughs in diagnostic testing, a meticulous history and knowledge of the life cycles and the often characteristic skin manifestations of these parasites remain essential to prompt diagnosi…

A 9-year-old boy in Teheran, Iran developed severe asthmatic symptoms, productive cough, and moderate eosinophilia. Lung biopsy demonstrated a helminth in a granulomatous lesion with foreign-body type cellular reaction leading to a tentative diagnosis of visceral larva migrans. Diethylcarbamazine, thiabendazole, and steroids were given, rapidly relieving the symptoms. In a subsequent review of the biopsy the helminth was identified as a Capillaria, probably Capillaria (Thominx) aerophila, a nematode parasite of dogs, cats, and other carnivores, apparently the ninth such infection to be reporte…

A total of 200 patients with acute and chronic hepatic diseases and 100 apparently normal cross-matched controls were examined for the parasitic cause. The IHAT showed 3% had hydatid cysts, 3% had fascioliasis and 53.5% had schistosomiasis. However, no eggs were detected in the fascioliasis patients and only 4 & 3 cases showed S. mansoni and S. haematobium eggs in stools & urines respectively. ELISA showed 10% with visceral larva migrans & 65.5% with toxoplasmosis (IgG, IgM or both). On the other hand, 27% of the controls showed antibodies against toxoplasmosis.

The author reports an anatomoclinical observation of eosinophilic granulomatous hepatitis due to toxocariasis. The problems of the histologic differential diagnosis are discussed. Human cases of parasitic infestation by Toxacara canis--larva migrans syndrome--are quite uncommon (1, 2). In the acute stage the hepatic lesion most often consists in eosinophilic granulomatous hepatitis. The chance finding of an eosinophilic granuloma in a puncture biopsy of the liver may rise problems as concerns the histological differential diagnosis, especially when there is no clinical evidence of a parasitosi…
