Heterogeneity of depressive symptoms and associated factors in Korean adults: a latent class analysis using a national data survey.

PURPOSE: This study aimed to identify latent classes of depressive symptoms among Korean adults and to examine the sociodemographic and biobehavioral factors associated with each subgroup. METHODS: This secondary analysis used data from 4,646 adults who participated in the 2022 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Latent class analysis was applied to the 9 items of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 to identify distinct subgroups. Multinomial logistic regression was then performed to determine the factors associated with class membership. RESULTS: Three distinct latent cla…

Derivation and validation of clinical subphenotypes of adult sepsis in Africa: A latent class analysis of infection site and organ dysfunction.

OBJECTIVE: Sepsis is a heterogeneous syndrome characterized by substantial variation in infection source, organ dysfunction, and clinical outcomes, and a disproportionate burden in Africa. We aimed to derive and externally validate clinical subphenotypes among adults hospitalized with sepsis in Africa. DESIGN: We used latent class analysis with infection source and organ dysfunction as model inputs. We labeled classes post hoc according to their predominant clinical features. We evaluated associations between subphenotypes and 30-day mortality using multivariable logistic regression. SETTING…

Use and experience of intimate partner violence and coercive control among veterans in primary care: A latent class analysis.

Intimate partner violence (IPV) occurs at elevated rates among Veterans, with recent meta-analyses estimating 31.8% of Veterans use IPV and 24.3% of Veterans experience IPV. While Johnson's (2008) typology distinguishes IPV types based on control patterns, limited research has applied latent class analysis to identify IPV typologies that incorporate measures of coercive control. This study used latent class analysis to examine patterns of IPV use and experience among Veterans in primary care, focusing on coercive control dynamics and their associations to mental health outcomes. Cross-sectiona…

Impact Profiles in Psoriatic Arthritis: An Exploratory Latent Class Analysis of the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis International Society Health Index.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify and characterize distinct subgroups of patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) based on their responses to the Assessment of SpondyloArthritis international Society Health Index (ASAS HI), using latent class analysis (LCA). METHODS: We performed an exploratory LCA on 17 dichotomous ASAS HI items in a cohort of patients with PsA (n = 90). Model adequacy was evaluated by log-likelihood, Akaike information criterion (AIC), Bayesian information criterion (BIC), entropy, and average posterior probabilities (AvePP). Clinical measures (Psoriatic Arthritis Impact of Di…

Latent Class Analysis for the Identification of Phenotypes Associated with Increased Risk in Atrial Fibrillation Patients: The COOL-AF Registry.

Patients with atrial fibrillation (AF) often have clinical complexity phenotypes. Latent class analysis (LCA) is based on the concept of modeling of both observed and unobserved (latent) variables. We hypothesized that LCA can help in identification of AF patient groups with different risk profiles and identify patients who benefit most from the Atrial fibrillation Better Care (ABC) pathway. We studied non-valvular AF patients in the prospective multicenter COOL-AF registry. The outcomes were all-cause death, ischemic stroke/systemic embolism (SSE), major bleeding, and heart failure. Components…

A Latent Class Analysis of Psychopathology Among Adults in Residential Substance Use Treatment: Associations With Craving and Treatment Dropout.

OBJECTIVE: Adults receiving residential treatment for substance use disorders (SUDs) who have comorbid psychopathology face unique challenges, including an increased risk of substance use craving and treatment dropout against medical advice (AMA). Prior studies have investigated associations between specific forms of psychopathology and these outcomes. However, psychological disorders often co-occur and may cluster together to amplify risk for craving and treatment dropout AMA. METHODS: This study used latent class analysis to identify patterns of psychopathology in 1046 adult patients receiv…

Profiles of tobacco product use and related consumer characteristics in the US and Israel: A multiple-group latent class analysis.

Despite tobacco marketing diversification, limited research has examined use profiles across countries, particularly in relation to consumer values (e.g. appeal of innovation, conscientiousness). Using 2021 data, latent class analysis assessed past-month use of seven tobacco products (cigarettes, electronic cigarettes [e-cigarettes], heated tobacco products, cigars, hookah, pipe, smokeless) among adults reporting past-month use in the United States (US n = 382) and Israel (n = 561). Multivariable multinomial regression examined consumer values and sociodemographics in relation to country-speci…

Reasons for Migration and Their Associations with HIV Risk and Prevention Among Cisgender Sexual Minority Men: A Latent Class Analysis.

The immigrant population in the United States (U.S.) is rapidly growing; yet there is limited knowledge about how reasons for migrating to the U.S. are associated with HIV prevention behaviors. Using data from the American Men's Internet Survey (2018-2020), we performed a Latent Class Analysis (LCA) to identify patterns in reasons for migration among cisgender gay, bisexual, and other sexual minority men (SMM) who born outside the U.S. We used multivariable logistic regression controlling for demographic characteristics to assess class associations with the following in the past 12 months: con…

Classifying migraine subtypes and their characteristics by latent class analysis using data of a nation-wide population-based study.

Migraine neither presents with a definitive single symptom nor has a distinct biomarker; thus, its diagnosis is based on combinations of typical symptoms. We aimed to identify natural subgroups of migraine based on symptoms listed in the diagnostic criteria of the third edition of the International Classification of Headache Disorders. Latent class analysis (LCA) was applied to the data of the Korean Sleep-Headache Study, a nationwide population-based survey. We selected a three-class model based on Akaike and Bayesian information criteria and characterized the three identified classes as "mil…

A Latent Class Analysis of Gender Attitudes and Their Associations with Intimate Partner Violence and Mental Health in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Gender role attitudes, views held by individuals regarding the roles men and women should play in society, are a powerful social determinant of health. However, work remains in elucidating the associations between gender attitudes and intimate partner violence (IPV) perpetration or victimization and mental health problems. We used latent class analysis to classify patterns of responses on survey items on gender attitudes by male and female adults in households that participated in an economic empowerment intervention and evaluation in rural villages in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Attitud…

Latent class analysis to evaluate performance of point-of-care CCA for low-intensity Schistosoma mansoni infections in Burundi.

BACKGROUND: Kato-Katz examination of stool smears is the field-standard method for detecting Schistosoma mansoni infection. However, Kato-Katz misses many active infections, especially of light intensity. Point-of-care circulating cathodic antigen (CCA) is an alternative field diagnostic that is more sensitive than Kato-Katz when intensity is low, but interpretation of CCA-trace results is unclear. To evaluate trace results, we tested urine and stool specimens from 398 pupils from eight schools in Burundi using four approaches: two in Burundi and two in a laboratory in Leiden, the Netherlands.
