BACKGROUND: Malignant primary cardiac tumors are infrequent and can lead to an unfavorable prognosis if not identified and treated promptly. Early detection and prompt treatment of malignant primary cardiac tumors are crucial for a better prognosis. This article presents a case of primary cardiac leiomyosarcoma and reviews the literature on this topic.
CASE PRESENTATION: Female patient that developed recurrent pericardial effusion and hemodynamic instability caused by a cardiac tumor, later identified as leiomyosarcoma. Multidisciplinary treatment was administered to the patient.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) represents one of the most common soft tissue sarcomas, involving various anatomical sites like the retroperitoneum, genitourinary tract, and extremities. LMS of the bone is extremely rare, with a 0.7% incidence of all primary malignant bone tumors. They are histologically identical to the leiomyosarcomas of other sites but pose a diagnostic dilemma due to their rarity and varied presentation when it manifests as a bony lesion.

This case report highlights a patient with a leiomyosarcoma originating in the ureter. A chart review was performed on a single patient who presented with a malignant retroperitoneal mass measuring 11.5 × 8.2 × 6.5 cm with subsequent metastasis sites to the breast, pancreas, liver, and lungs. The diagnosis of a leiomyosarcoma is uncommon, accounting for 0.1-0.4% of all cancer diagnoses in the United States. The diagnosis of a leiomyosarcoma originating from the ureter is extremely rare with fewer than 20 reported cases to date. Lack of typical urinary tract cancer signs and symptoms prevented …

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Prostatic leiomyosarcoma is a rare aggressive tumor. The presentation came with non-specific signs and symptoms likewise other forms of prostatic pathology like benign prostatic hyperplasia.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 64 years old man presented to the emergency with a recurrent macroscopic hematuria, he was a heavy smoker and has reported lower urinary tract symptoms. On the physical examination, the patient was hemodynamically stable and afebrile. However, the digital rectal exam revealed an enlarged homogeneous prostate without any palpable nodule. Pelvic transabdomin…

BACKGROUND: Penile leiomyosarcoma arises from smooth muscles, which can be from dartos fascia, erector pili in the skin covering the shaft, or from tunica media of the superficial vessels and cavernosa. We describe presentation, treatment options, and recurrence pattern of this rare malignancy.
CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of penile leiomyosarcoma in a 70-year-old patient who presented to the urology clinic with 1-year history of a slowly enlarging penile mass associated with phimosis.
CONCLUSIONS: Prognosis of penile LMS is difficult to ascertain because reported cases are rare. Pen…

Primary mediastinal leiomyosarcomas are extremely rare soft tissue tumors, accounting for less than 15% of all primary mediastinal sarcomas. Middle mediastinal tumors are very rare, with a prevalence of 0.1% in healthy individuals. Usually, mediastinal leiomyosarcoma originates and involves mediastinal structures such as oesophagus, heart or great vessels. Here we report the rare case of a giant middle mediastinal leiomyosarcoma without involvement of any surrounding structures in a 70 years old female. Main related symptoms were cough and increasing dyspnea. Imaging work-up showed an 11-cm gi…

PURPOSE: A randomized phase III study evaluated the efficacy of eribulin versus dacarbazine in patients with advanced liposarcoma and leiomyosarcoma. Improved overall survival (OS) led to approval of eribulin for liposarcoma, but not for leiomyosarcoma.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: We explored the molecular profile of 77 archival leiomyosarcoma samples from this trial to identify potential predictive biomarkers, utilizing low-coverage whole-genome and whole-exome sequencing. Tumor molecular profiles were correlated with clinical data, and disease control was defined as complete/partial response or st…

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is one of the most common forms of soft tissue sarcoma with approximately 2,500 cases per year in the United States. The symptoms LMS vary depending upon the location, size, and spread of the tumor. In early stages, it may not be associated with any obvious symptoms so diagnosis and treatment may be delayed. In some cases, it can grow quickly and behave aggressively. Most types of LMS occur in the abdomen or in the uterus; although, scrotal LMS can be a very rare presentation of the disease. Here we present our case of a large, ulcerated scrotal LMS originating from subcut…

BACKGROUND/AIM: Leiomyosarcoma is an extremely rare, small bowel neoplasm (2% of all gastrointestinal tumours). Early diagnosis is challenging due to the slow growth of the cancer. The biological behaviour of this group of tumours is aggressive, and the first-line treatment is surgical resection.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: This is a report of 4 cases of small bowel leiomyosarcoma that were treated in the last ten years at Hospital San Martino: one involving the jejunum and three involving the ileum (age range=69-86 years). Three patients underwent surgical resection and one was treated with chemot…

Early diagnosis of the rare and life-threatening uterine leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is essential for prompt treatment, to improve survival. Preoperative distinction of LMS from benign leiomyoma remains a challenge, and thus LMS is often diagnosed post-operatively. This retrospective observational study evaluated the predictive diagnostic utility of 32 preoperative variables in 190 women who underwent a hysterectomy, with a postoperative diagnosis of leiomyoma (n = 159) or LMS (n = 31), at the Liverpool Women's National Health Service (NHS) Foundation Trust, between 2010 and 2019. A total of 7 preope…

Primary leiomyosarcoma (LMS) of thyroid is rare malignant neoplasm usually seen in elderly patients. These tumours are characterised by a rapidly growing mass in the neck, difficult to diagnose preoperatively and are highly aggressive with high recurrence rates in spite of radical surgery, chemotherapy and radiotherapy. We herein report a case of 50-year-old female with a rapidly growing painless mass in the neck. Total thyroidectomy with bilateral neck node clearance was done. Histology and Immunohistochemistry revealed primary LMS of thyroid gland. Within 1 month of radical surgery she devel…

Leiomyosarcoma is a malignant mesenchymal tumor that is very uncommon in the conjunctiva. Nevertheless, we describe here the clinical manifestations, management, and prognosis of a rare case of leiomyosarcoma in this location. An 81-year-old male presented at a tertiary hospital with a rapidly growing mass. After performing biopsy, histopathological examination revealed the existence of a conjunctival leiomyosarcoma. On this diagnosis, a thorough metastatic screening was performed showing no enlarged lymph nodes or metastatic deposits anywhere in the body. To treat the condition, we performed …

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a malignant soft tissue tumor that exhibits smooth muscle differentiation, and its occurrence in the oral cavity is exceedingly rare, especially in the floor of mouth. A 54-year-old male was admitted for evaluation of a painless nodular mass in the left floor of mouth with a 3-month history. With the help of computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination, the patient went on a surgery excision, and by pathological and immunohistochemical findings, a diagnoses of LMS was confirmed. Then the patient went on chemotherapy, and six-month follow up …

One challenging feature of head and neck pathology is that a dizzying array of spindle cell lesions occurs here which ranges all the way from reactive, very aggressive forms to malignant lesions. Leiomyosarcoma is one such malignant tumour of mesenchymal origin exhibiting smooth muscle differentiation; presenting generally nonspecific signs and symptoms. Here we present a case of leiomyosarcoma in a 21 year old female patient associated with single reddish pink swelling present in the posterior right maxillary tuberosity region with moderate facial asymmetry. On histopathological analysis, all…

The malignant transformation of a uterine leiomyoma is still debated and, if it occurs, it is very rare. The case of a patient affected by one small leiomyoma is described. Diagnosis was made postoperatively on histopathological examination. The case reported here is meant to underline the need to keep all uterine myomas in check since the transition into leiomyosarcomas (LMSs) may occur with an evolution over a time period which has not been established so far. Specific receptors for luteinizing hormone/human chorionic gonadotropin (LH/hCG) have also been identified in the myometrium of sever…

Leiomyosarcoma of the head and neck is very rare, as only about 100 cases have been reported; of these, only 3 cases have been previously reported in the parapharyngeal space. We report the fourth such case, and we review the features of this entity. The patient was an 84-year-old woman who presented to the emergency department for treatment of an 18-month history of right-sided headache, a 6-month history of right-sided hearing loss and nasal obstruction, and a 2-month history of dysphagia. Physical examination revealed a bulge in the right side of the soft palate and the right lateral nasoph…

Herein, we present a rare case of intraosseous leiomyosarcoma arising in the epiphysis of the distal femur and showing unusual radiographic features. A 44-year-old man presented with a pain in the left knee joint. Computed tomography revealed an intraosseous lesion with slightly increased attenuation and a thin marginal sclerotic rim in the femoral medial condyle. The signal of the lesion was hypointense on T1-weighted magnetic resonance (MR) images and hyperintense on fat-suppressed T2-weighted MR images. After gadolinium administration, the signal of the lesion was moderately and diffusely e…

A 70-year-old man presented with a left scrotal swelling. A computed tomography scan showed an 8-cm left scrotal mass and no metastasis. Radical orchiectomy with high ligation of the spermatic cord was performed. The tumor was classified as a high-grade leiomyosarcoma of the left testis. An intensive follow-up including repeated computed tomography scans was performed. A computed tomography scan 34 months after the surgery showed a retroperitoneal mass in front of the left kidney. Resection of the mass was performed. Microscopically, the mass was metastatic leiomyosarcoma. Intratesticular leio…
