Adolescents' ideas of normative life span development and personal future goals.

We investigated how 57 adolescents (23 girls and 34 boys), aged 12 to 15 years, compared their idea of normative life span development to their personal future goals. A two-stage study (questionnaire and follow-up interview) included two open-ended "life paths", measures for self-evaluation and self-other comparisons. Overlap of content categories in the life paths supported the relationship between individual goals and normative expectations about life span development, especially when it comes to the life domains of education, occupation, family, property and retirement. The respondents show

Divorce transitions: identifying risk and promoting resilience for children and their parental relationships.

This paper gives an account of qualitative research linked to clinical work relating to some of the short-term effects of divorce on children within a British perspective. The transitions that accompany divorce and family reordering are shown by many studies in the United States, Australia, and New Zealand as well as in the United Kingdom to have stressful effects for children that can lead to long-term negative outcomes. Other studies have focused on the differential social and family factors that may contribute to the "differences that make a difference" to whether divorce has harmful effect

Smoking, alcohol and life events related to psoriasis among women.

Possible risk factors for psoriasis were studied among women aged 18-50 years. The series consisted of 55 consecutive psoriatic patients and 108 unmatched controls with other skin diseases, from the university departments of dermatology in Helsinki, Oulu and Tampere. A questionnaire focused on two specified periods of time, 12 months before the onset of the skin disease and 12 months before the examination date. Before the onset of the skin disease, the recalled mean number of cigarettes smoked daily was 8.6 (1.2 SE) for psoriatics and 4.7 (0.7) for controls (P = 0.004). The respective alcohol

Husband and wife differences in response to undesirable life events.

In the present study of 451 married couples living in the rural midwest, gender differences were examined in reports of exposure and vulnerability to specific types of undesirable life events. Consistent with expectations derived from either a social structural or identity perspective, the results demonstrated that men are more likely than women to report exposure to and to be distressed by work and financial events. Women, on the other hand, are more strongly influenced by exposure to negative events within the family but not within their network of friends. Outcomes vary according to the typ

[Psychiatric and psychological aspects of anorexia nervosa].

A group of 38 patients treated in the Department of Psychiatry, Medical Academy of Gdańsk, from 1972 to 1988, because of anorexia nervosa (0.33% patients treated in the Department) was studied. There was 36 women and 2 men aged 14 to 39 years (average 21 years). Half of the patients finished only secondary school, the others started university education--most of them were still students. Except one, they presented good intellectual abilities; 6 women were married. In 42% cases a conflict situation at school or family was found (adaptational problems, competition at home); in 18% cases problems

The meaning of time: Mohawk women at midlife.

Midlife has emerged as an important developmental transitional point for both men and women. For women, menopause is synonymous with midlife, and consequently women and health professionals have focused on the losses and problems of this biological event. Few studies to date have placed menopause within the context of other life experiences occurring at this time and in varied cultural groups. Eight Mohawk women, aged 45 to 54 years, were visited in their homes on a weekly or bimonthly basis spanning a 6- to 8-week period. Using a grounded theory approach, the women were encouraged to describe

Impact of life events on subjects with panic disorder and on comparison subjects.

A questionnaire measure of major life events was given to 64 subjects with diagnoses of panic disorder with agoraphobia, 33 subjects with other anxiety disorders, and 34 nonanxious subjects. Anxious subjects indicated the life events that had occurred in the 6-month period immediately before their current disorder began and rated the impact of each event on a 7-point scale. Nonanxious subjects made the same ratings for a 6-month period 1 1/2-2 years before the study. There was no significant difference between groups in the number of life events reported. However, anxious subjects rated these

The Beck Depression Inventory: item order and the impact of response sets.

The lack of subtle content in the item groups of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and the consistency in the ordering of the items from least to most pathological make this instrument unduly susceptible to either defensive or malingering response sets. Two experimental forms were developed for the BDI: a backwards version (a simple reversal of the order of items within each group) and a random-order version. These forms, together with the original item order, were given to college undergraduate women along with the Depression scale from the MMPI and the Burks-Martin Questionnaire covering r

Paraphilic infantilism. A rare case of fetishistic behaviour.

A rare case of infantile behaviour of a fetishistic nature in an 80-year-old man was possibly related to a head injury at the age of six, when his regression first began. Treatment was deemed unwarranted.

The pattern of isolated sleep paralysis among Nigerian medical students.

In a cross-sectional study of the patterns of isolated sleep paralysis among 164 Nigerian medical students, 26.1% admitted having experienced this phenomenon. About 31% of the females and 20% of the males had had this experience. Of those with sleep paralysis, 32.6% had hypnogenic hallucinations during the episode, mainly visual. Sleep paralysis was not significantly associated with psychosocial distress or differences in personality profile. Although the rate differs across cultures, the myths associated with sleep paralysis are similar.

Urinary-free cortisol excretion in relation to age in acutely stressed persons with depressive symptoms.

We examined the relationship between age and urinary excretion of free cortisol in acutely stressed middle-aged and elderly persons. We observed that elderly persons under stress excreted larger amounts of urinary-free cortisol than did middle-aged persons; Pearson's r between age and cortisol = 0.38, p less than 0.05. When the sample was stratified by severity of depressive symptoms, the relationship between age and cortisol excretion was strongly accentuated among those with severe depressive symptoms (r = 0.62, p = 0.01) and diminished among those with milder symptoms (r = 0.25, N.S.). Is there a short-cut? An investigation into the life event interview.

Forty-two men and 53 women patients at the Edinburgh Regional Poisoning Treatment Centre were interviewed, usually within 8-12 h of admission. The interview covered life events and difficulties from 6 months before admission. For 43 patients it was in 3 stages: 1) a list of life events and difficulties to be ticked, 2) standard probing questions about each situation ticked, 3) free flowing unstructured interviewing eliciting fuller contextual data about the situations. An independent rater scored the situations after each of the three stages, at each point being blind to information contained

Life events and depression. Part 1. Effect of sex, age and civil status.

This is the first of three articles dealing with some basic aspects of the relationship between life events and depression, and is also one part of a larger study in which the possible impact of stressful events has been studied from a multifactorial point of view. Two-hundred and four patients suffering from a depressive disorder, consecutively admitted to the Department of Psychiatry of the Umeå University have participated in a study of life events carried out by means of a specially constructed life events inventory that was used as a guideline for a semistructured interview. The results o

Anxiety during a crisis: emotional effects of screening for neural tube defects.

Anxiety was assessed in prospective mothers undergoing screening for foetal neural tube defects. Anxiety was found to be extreme and only returned to normal levels when a definitely negative amniocentesis result was communicated to the woman. Anxiety was mitigated by social and family support but other life events had little effect on it.

Narrative literature review: Health, activity and participation issues for women following traumatic brain injury.

OBJECTIVE: This narrative review will draw attention to the current limitations within the literature related to women following traumatic brain injury in order to stimulate discussion and inform future directions for research. BACKGROUND: There is a wide-ranging body of research about traumatic brain injury with the higher incidence of brain injury among males reflected in this body of work. As a result, the specific gendered issues facing women with traumatic brain injury are not as well understood. METHOD: A search of electronic databases was conducted using the terms "traumatic brain inj

Negative life events: risk to health-related quality of life in children and youth with HIV infection.

Children and youth with perinatally acquired HIV infection are living longer because of improved drug therapies, but they may be at risk for poor health-related quality of life (HRQOL) outcomes because of nondisease factors. Families affected by HIV disease are more likely to experience major negative life events (NLEs). The effects of NLEs, shown to impact HRQOL in children with other chronic illnesses, have not been evaluated in children with HIV infection. The primary objective of this study was to determine if NLEs occurring in the previous 12 months were associated with increased risk for

Family Stressors and Sleep Problems During Adolescence: Evidence from the ALSPAC Cohort.

OBJECTIVES: Much research on risk factors of poor sleep in adolescence has focussed on stressful life events, but without explicitly investigating the role of family-wide (rather than personal) events. We carried out this study to explore the role of stressful family-wide events in sleep problems in adolescence in the general population. METHOD: Using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC), we investigated the role of recent family-wide stressors (at ages 12-16 years) in sleep problems (at age 17 years), while controlling for previous exposure to personal and f
