Comprehensive Conservative Care in End-Stage Kidney Disease.

In patients with end-stage kidney disease (ESKD), when there maybe situations where dialysis does not offer benefits in terms of survival or health-related quality of life, dialysis should not be viewed as the default therapy. Such patients can be offered comprehensive conservative care as an alternative to dialysis. Conservative (nondialytic) management of ESKD includes careful attention to fluid balance, treatment of anemia, correction of acidosis and hyperkalemia, blood pressure, and calcium/phosphorus metabolism management and dietary modification. Individualized symptom management and sup

Restoring self-esteem and quality of life through multidisciplinary care: a cross-sectional evaluation of the Panzi One-Stop Centre model among rape survivors in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

BACKGROUND: Sexual violence in conflict settings is a major public health and social justice issue with long-lasting psychological consequences. In the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), the Panzi One-Stop Centre model provides integrated medical, psychosocial, legal, and socio-economic support to rape survivors. However, evidence on how different combinations of services are associated with psychosocial well-being and equity in health outcomes remains limited. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study in July 2025 among 314 rape survivors who had received care between 2022 and 2024 in E

Multidisciplinary care of the dying adolescent.

The adolescent at the end of life poses a unique combination of challenges resulting from the collision of failing health with a developmental trajectory meant to lead to attainment of personal independence. Because virtually all spheres of the dying adolescent's life are affected, optimal palliative care for these young persons requires a multidisciplinary team whose members have a good understanding of their complementary roles and a shared commitment to providing well-coordinated care. Members of the team include the physician (to initiate and coordinate palliative care management); the nur

A survey of undergraduate teaching in anaesthesia.

Currently, no well accepted and clearly defined 'core' curriculum for undergraduate anaesthesia, teaching exists. To address this deficiency, we surveyed 73 university departments of anaesthesia and intensive care. Sixty-five replied from South-east Asia (12), Australasia (13), the UK and Ireland (28) and Canada (12). A questionnaire containing 37 items ranging from departmental structure to curriculum content was used. We found significant regional differences. Overall, most departments taught pharmacology of anaesthetic drugs (83%), pre-operative assessment (92%) and care of the unconscious

Exploring the role of telenursing in meeting the needs of palliative care patients and symptom outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Palliative care aims to improve quality of life for patients and families facing serious illness, yet access is often limited by workforce shortages, geographic barriers and patient preferences. Telenursing may address these challenges by enhancing access to care, symptom management, and support for patients and caregivers. AIM: Guided by the Donabedian model, this study evaluated a customer relationship management-enabled telenursing intervention in a Saudi tertiary hospital by describing users and care delivery patterns, assessing changes in symptom severity, and exploring the r

Palliative care in cardiovascular medicine.

Cardiovascular disease remains the leading global cause of morbidity and mortality. Although advances in prevention, diagnostics, and disease-modifying therapies have prolonged survival, many individuals now live longer with high symptom burden, functional decline, and complex decisional needs. Palliative care (PC) for adults with advanced cardiovascular disease can improve quality of life, support caregivers, and align treatments with patient values and goals. Core elements include symptom management, effective communication, shared decision-making, advance care planning, and integration of p

How primary care can contribute to good mental health in adults.

The need for support for good mental health is enormous. General support for good mental health is needed for 100% of the population, and at all stages of life, from early childhood to end of life. Focused support is needed for the 17.6% of adults who have a mental disorder at any time, including those who also have a mental health problem amongst the 30% who report having a long-term condition of some kind. All sectors of society and all parts of the NHS need to play their part. Primary care cannot do this on its own. This paper describes how primary care practitioners can help stimulate such

The IMPART (IMproving PAlliative care in Residential aged care using Telehealth) trial: a stepped-wedge cluster-randomised controlled trial protocol.

BACKGROUND: The quality of palliative and end-of-life care (EOLC) in residential aged care (RACFs) is variable, and often suboptimal. The aim of IMPART is to improve palliative care in RACFs. IMPART provides online training and telehealth palliative-geriatric support to aged care staff and family physicians/general practitioners (GPs) to enable timely EOLC discussions, clinical support, and improve documentation of care preferences. This may lead to preference-based care, reduction of unplanned hospitalization, and improved quality of life and EOLC. This protocol describes a study to evaluate

Developing a values-based interorganisational Care at the End-of-Life Collaborative framework for the Australian context: A mixed-methods, practice-based research protocol.

BACKGROUND: As the population ages and the demand for quality care at the end of life increases, health costs are increasing, thus creating a perfect storm of need, outstripping the supply of palliative care services. Engaging communities to support care at the end of life through the establishment of values-based interorganisational Care at the End-of-Life Collaboratives is one approach to addressing this problem. Whilst there is an abundance of literature about collaboratives, understanding of those supporting care at the end of life is lacking. OBJECTIVES: The objectives of this research a

Proactive preventive dental care to maintain eating function in palliative care: a narrative review.

PURPOSE: Oral complications are common in palliative care and may directly impair patients' eating habits, comfort, and quality of life. Despite these impacts, dental integration remains suboptimal into supportive oncology and non-cancer palliative care models in many settings. This review synthesized current evidence and proposed a practical framework for proactive preventive dental care. METHODS: A structured narrative review was conducted via the PubMed and Ichushi-Web electronic databases to identify studies indexed between 2000 and 2026. The literature addressing oral symptoms, masticati
