BACKGROUND: Peripheral T and natural killer (NK) cell lymphomas represent a heterogeneous group of diseases with varied clinical features, prognosis and response to treatment.Content and comments: Flow cytometric immunophenotyping facilitated the diagnosis and classification for T/NK-cell neoplasms, and is very useful in the identification of therapeutic target markers. Clinical, immunophenotypic, histopathological, immunohistochemical, molecular and genetic methods must be correlated because none of them is strong enough alone for diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: Peripheral T-cell lymphoma (PTCL) is rare in pediatric patients and is associated with worse outcome compared with other pediatric non-Hodgkin lymphomas. We report our institutional experience over a 10-year period.
METHODS: Patients were identified through the institutional oncology database. Data were abstracted through a detailed retrospective review of patient charts. Those with isolated cutaneous T-cell lymphoma were excluded from this analysis.

A 55-year-old woman presented with an inflammatory panniculitis-like plaque on her right thigh. Biopsy disclosed a subcutaneous infiltrate of multilobated T lymphocytes strongly expressing the CD30 antigen. A complete clinical remission was achieved with local radiation therapy, with no evidence of recurrence in 13 months of follow-up. To our knowledge, our patient is the first reported case of CD30-positive multilobated peripheral T-cell lymphoma primarily involving the subcutaneous tissue.

Two childhood cases are reported of peripheral T-cell lymphoma; the neoplastic cells expressed activated CD8 (T8) phenotype and contained Epstein-Barr viral (EBV) DNA. Both patients had an aggressive and rapid clinical course despite chemotherapy. Elevated titers of antibodies to EBV-viral capsid antigen (greater than 640) and early antigen (greater than 10) were found in both patients.
