Lysine malonylation (Kmal) is a novel post-translational modification (PTM) implicated in numerous biological processes. Our recent study finds that human sperm proteins are modified by Kmal, but the functional significance of Kmal in human sperm remains unclear. The present study shows that Kmal primarily occurs in human sperm tail proteins with molecular weights ranging from 15 to 250 kDa. Glutamate receptor-mediated excitotoxicity and mitochondrial dysfunction appear to play an important role in motoneuron (MN) degeneration in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). In the present study we used an organotypic slice culture of chick embryo spinal cord to explore the responsiveness of mature MNs to different excitotoxic stimuli and mitrochondrial inhibition. This study was designed to assay the lipid peroxidation (LPO) in the heart from adult (10--12 months) and old (22--25 months) Wistar male rats during immobilization stress. A value of LPO was estimated according to the concentration of conjugate dienes, TBA-positive substances and fluorescent products such as Schiff base. Investigations have shown that immobilization of rats was accompanied by increase in the concentration of all studied LPO intermediates in myocardium from both the age groups. The effects of branched-chain amino acid metabolites on granulocyte-macrophage progenitor cell proliferation in marrow culture are reported.
