Case report: Clinical, histological and ultrastructural characterization of type II dentinogenesis imperfecta.

BACKGROUND: Type II dentinogenesis imperfecta (DGIII) is an autosomal dominant dental development anomaly that affects both the primary and permanent dentition. CASE REPORT: This case report describes the clinical, radiographic and morphological characteristics of the teeth of a seven-year-old child with DGI-II determined by optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. TREATMENT: This consisted of extraction of the primary teeth with periapical lesions due to the advanced state of tooth resorption. Aesthetic restorations were performed on the mandibular anterior teeth and occlusal fi

Assessment and treatment of facial deformity resulting from radiation to the orbital area in childhood.

Children who receive radiation for malignant tumors in the orbital area frequently develop widespread craniofacial deformities. These affect the skull, orbit, maxilla, and mandible. When these patients seek treatment at a later age, they require careful assessment using cephalometrics and three-dimensional imaging. It is recommended that the four levels of skeletal deformity be corrected in a single procedure, that is frontotemporal expansion with repositioning of the skull base area, orbital expansion and repositioning together with maxillary and mandibular surgery. Bone grafts should be inla

Reconstruction of large mandibular and surrounding soft-tissue defects using distraction with bone transport.

Reconstruction of large bone and soft-tissue defects of the inferior third of the face is possible using various surgical techniques. Patients who require these procedures need to be in good general health, may have sequelae linked to donor sites, and require several interventions to achieve good aesthetic and functional results. The aim of this study was to report outcomes in patients with large mandibular and soft-tissue defects treated using osteogenic distraction with bone transport. Between 2001 and 2008, 14 patients had distraction with bone transport. Most patients were men (92.1%). The

Conservative interdisciplinary treatment of a case with multiple facial and condyle fractures.

The purpose of this case report is to describe an interdisciplinary approach for a 51-year-old male who underwent multiple facial fractures including bilateral condyle fractures. The patient underwent emergency surgery, which included open reduction of the maxilla and mandibular symphysis and closed reduction of the bilateral condyle fractures. Although the patient recovered a comfortable range of mouth opening and alleviation of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) symptoms after surgery, he suffered from a large anterior-posterior discrepancy due to less stability on the condyle-fossa relations

Heterotopic ossification after alloplastic temporomandibular joint replacement: a case cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Heterotopic ossification (HO) is one of the serious complications leading to the failure of alloplastic temporomandibular joint replacement (TJR). However, there was few research on its exact incidence and occurrence. Severe HO might result in pain and limited mouth opening after surgery. Therefore, it is necessary to clarify its clinical and imaging manifestations. The purpose of this study was to study the occurrence and classify HO after the alloplastic TJR. METHOD: Patients who underwent standard TJR (Zimmer Biomet stock prostheses or Chinese stock prostheses) with fat graft a

Evaluation of bioresorbable plates in condylar fracture fixation: a case series.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and stability of bioresorbable plates in condylar fractures in adults. Twelve adult patients who had sustained a condylar fracture, either alone or in combination with other mandibular fractures, were clinically and radiologically assessed for the efficacy and stability of bioresorbable plate and screw fixation. Intraoperatively, a total of seven screw breakages were noted. Six cases showed instability of the fractured fragments after fixation with bioresorbable plates and screws; the other six cases showed adequate stability. A single b

Influence of endocrown-retained fixed dental prosthesis design on marginal integrity and fracture resistance.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of zirconia endocrown-retained fixed dental prosthesis (FDP) designs on marginal integrity and fracture resistance after thermomechanical aging, compared with full-coverage-retained FDPs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Three extracted mandibular second premolars and second molars were randomly assigned to three abutment designs: full-coverage retainers (A), butt-joint endocrowns (B), and endocrowns with shoulder finish line and ferrule-like extensions (C). All teeth were prepared as abutments for three-unit zirconia FDPs replacing a missing mandibular first molar, a

Influence of different implant designs on replacement of four teeth of the posterior free-end edentulism: Three-dimensional finite element analysis and clinic case validation.

BACKGROUND: With periodontal disease having an increasing incidence, mandibular free-end edentulism caused by periodontitis is clinically more common. Finite element analysis and clinical case reports were used to evaluate the influence of different designs on the load distribution of implant prosthesis in mandibular posterior free-end edentulism. METHOD: A finite element model of a mandible with posterior free-end edentulism was established. Considering the implant position and selection of single crown repair or splint repair, four designs were conducted including model A: 3435 × 37(four-un

Development and validation of a digital twin of the human lower jaw under impact loading by using non-linear finite element analyses.

Mandibular fractures are one of the most frequently observed injuries within craniofacial region mostly due to tumor-related problems and traumatic events, often related to non-linear effects like impact loading. Therefore, a validated digital twin of the mandible is required to develop the best possible patient-specific treatment. However, there is a need to obtain a fully compatible numerical model that can reflect the patients' characteristics, be available and accessible quickly, require an acceptable level of modeling efforts and knowledge to provide accurate, robust and fast results at t

Anatomical features and prosthetic considerations of edentulous patients with mandibular reconstruction with autograft performed more than 40 years ago.

In this manuscript there are presented two cases, both with mandibular reconstruction with autograft harvested from the iliac crest, performed more than 40 years ago, but with different bone defect etiology, i.e., mandibular dysplasia and mandibular fracture, both having currently extensive tooth loss in the mandible, being in need for prosthetic rehabilitation. These cases confirm that reconstructive surgery of mandibular bone defects with autograft from iliac crest has a satisfactory long-term outcome, providing acceptable conditions for prosthetic rehabilitation. Bone resorption in the graf

Conservative reduction by lever action of chronic bilateral mandibular condyle dislocation.

AIMS: The treatment of long-standing dislocation of the temporomandibular joint is broadly classified into open reduction and closed reduction. The current study presents a case of long-standing dislocation of the temporomandibular joint treated 3 years after dislocation. In this study, the authors evaluated the long-term outcome of conservative reduction by lever action of chronic bilateral mandibular condyle dislocation. METHODOLOGY: Manual repositioning of temporomandibular joint dislocation lasting for 3 years in a 31-year-old woman was attempted without success; therefore, conservative r

Hemophilic pseudotumor of the mandible. Report of a case.

Hemophilic pseudotumor of bone is a rarely encountered lesion associated with hemophilia. To date, only eight cases in the mandible have been reported in the literature. A rare case occurring in the mandible of a 2 1/2-year-old child required the fabrication of a customized wound obturator for postoperative wound care after surgical curettage. The literature is reviewed and the obturator described.

Three-Dimensional Evaluation of Alveolar Bone Levels Around Dental Implants and Natural Teeth: A Prospective Study.

INTRODUCTION: Dental implants' efficacy is influenced by the quality and quantity of the osseous tissue present at the site designated for dental implants. Therefore, this study was conducted with the primary objective of assessing marginal bone loss around mandibular posterior dental implants at six and 18 months after prosthesis placement, compared with the contralateral natural tooth. The secondary objective was to determine the correlation between various factors such as periodontal status, age, gender, duration between first and second-stage surgery, and marginal bone loss. MATERIALS AND

Oral Rehabilitation of Severely Atrophic Alveolar Ridge Using Sinus Augmentation and Ridge Split Technique: A Case Report.

Dental implant placement requires adequate bone volume. Sinus augmentation and ridge split technique enhance bone volume in a severely atrophied alveolar ridge. This case report describes the rehabilitation of a patient with severe posterior maxillary atrophy (residual bone height <2.5 mm) and a knife-edge posterior mandibular ridge using lateral sinus floor elevation and ridge split technique, respectively, followed by implant placement. Given the limited high-level evidence on the combined management of these complex anatomical deficiencies and their long-term implant outcomes, this report h
