How ticks keep ticking in the adversity of host immune reactions.

Ixodid ticks are acknowledged as one of the most important hematophagous arthropods because of their ability in transmitting a variety of tick-borne diseases. Mathematical models have been developed, based on emerging knowledge about tick ecology, pathogen epidemiology and their interface, to understand tick population dynamics and tick-borne diseases spread patterns. However, no serious effort has been made to model and assess the impact of host immunity triggered by tick feeding on the distribution of the tick population according to tick stages and on tick population extinction and persiste

A Game-Theoretic Model of Cholera with Optimal Personal Protection Strategies.

Cholera is an acute gastro-intestinal infection that affects millions of people throughout the world each year, primarily but not exclusively in developing countries. Because of its public health ramifications, considerable mathematical attention has been paid to the disease. Here we consider one neglected aspect of combating cholera: personal participation in anti-cholera interventions. We construct a game-theoretic model of cholera in which individuals choose whether to participate in either vaccination or clean water consumption programs under assumed costs. We find that relying upon indivi

Bifurcation thresholds and optimal control in transmission dynamics of arboviral diseases.

In this paper, we derive and analyse a model for the control of arboviral diseases which takes into account an imperfect vaccine combined with some other control measures already studied in the literature. We begin by analysing the basic model without control. We prove the existence of two disease-free equilibrium points and the possible existence of up to two endemic equilibrium points (where the disease persists in the population). We show the existence of a transcritical bifurcation and a possible saddle-node bifurcation and explicitly derive threshold conditions for both, including definin

A Temporoparietal Fascia Pocket Method in Elevation of Reconstructed Auricle for Microtia.

BACKGROUND: In two-stage procedures for reconstruction of microtia, an axial flap of temporoparietal fascia is widely used to cover the costal cartilage blocks placed behind the framework. Although a temporoparietal fascia flap is undoubtedly reliable, use of the flap is associated with some morbidity and comes at the expense of the option for salvage surgery. METHODS: The authors devised a simplified procedure for covering the cartilage blocks by creating a pocket in the postauricular temporoparietal fascia. In this procedure, the constructed auricle is elevated from the head superficially t

Parenting and cognitive and psychomotor delay due to small-for-gestational-age birth.

BACKGROUND: To examine whether different dimensions of parenting at different ages help small-for-gestational-age (SGA) children 'catch-up' the normal children in cognition and psychomotor. METHODS: We analyzed data of 800 children born SGA and 3,000 children born appropriate-for-gestational-age (AGA) from the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study-Birth cohort. The Two Bag Task was used to measure 2-year or 4-year parenting dimensions. Children's reading, math, gross motor, and fine motor scores were assessed at 5 years. Multivariable linear regression models were fitted to test the interactions

Structural and Practical Identifiability Issues of Immuno-Epidemiological Vector-Host Models with Application to Rift Valley Fever.

In this article, we discuss the structural and practical identifiability of a nested immuno-epidemiological model of arbovirus diseases, where host-vector transmission rate, host recovery, and disease-induced death rates are governed by the within-host immune system. We incorporate the newest ideas and the most up-to-date features of numerical methods to fit multi-scale models to multi-scale data. For an immunological model, we use Rift Valley Fever Virus (RVFV) time-series data obtained from livestock under laboratory experiments, and for an epidemiological model we incorporate a human compar

Phonology and arithmetic in the language-calculation network.

Arithmetic and language processing involve similar neural networks, but the relative engagement remains unclear. In the present study we used fMRI to compare activation for phonological, multiplication and subtraction tasks, keeping the stimulus material constant, within a predefined language-calculation network including left inferior frontal gyrus and angular gyrus (AG) as well as superior parietal lobule and the intraparietal sulcus bilaterally. Results revealed a generally left lateralized activation pattern within the language-calculation network for phonology and a bilateral activation p

An Epidemic Patchy Model with Entry-Exit Screening.

A multi-patch SEIQR epidemic model is formulated to investigate the long-term impact of entry-exit screening measures on the spread and control of infectious diseases. A threshold dynamics determined by the basic reproduction number R₀ is established: The disease can be eradicated if R₀ < 1, while the disease persists if R₀ > 1. As an application, six different screening strategies are explored to examine the impacts of screening on the control of the 2009 influenza A (H1N1) pandemic. We find that it is crucial to screen travelers from and to high-risk patches, and it is not necessary to imple

On the uniqueness of epidemic models fitting a normalized curve of removed individuals.

The susceptible-infected-removed (SIR) and the susceptible-exposed-infected-removed (SEIR) epidemic models with constant parameters are adequate for describing the time evolution of seasonal diseases for which available data usually consist of fatality reports. The problems associated with the determination of system parameters starts with the inference of the number of removed individuals from fatality data, because the infection to death period may depend on health care factors. Then, one encounters numerical sensitivity problems for the determination of the system parameters from a correct

Shared versus separate processes for letter and digit identification.

Letters and digits, although similar in many respects, also differ in potentially significant ways. Most importantly, letters are elements of an alphabetic writing system, whereas digits are logographs. In this article, we explore whether letters and digits are identified by a single character identification process that makes no fundamental distinction between the two types of characters, or whether instead letter and digit identification processes diverge at least in some respects. We present evidence from an acquired dyslexic patient, L.H.D., who is impaired in both letter and digit identif

Speed of mental addition in an abacus expert, estimated by eye movements and neural activities.

A grand expert of abacus looked at a display on which three-digit numbers were aligned vertically with constant spacing, for sequentially adding the numbers mentally. His eye regularly moved downward by alternating a fixation to one of the numbers with a saccade to another below it, with the average period of the alternations at 271 msec. His magnetoencephalogram averaged with respect to start of the fixations revealed activity in the right superior parietal cortex. This finding not only supported the previous view that abacus experts mentally calculate by manipulating spatial representations

Towards the development of an efficient nonlinear controller for ART and cART against HIV infection.

The Human Immuno-deficiency Virus (HIV) is responsible for attacking the CD4+ T cells present in human blood and causes the human immune system to become vulnerable for numerous contagious and opportunistic diseases. It is hence pertinent to curb the spread of HIV infection using anti-HIV drugs. This study integrates sigmoid function with conventional sliding mode control and incorporate it within the framework of multi-objective optimal model predictive controller to reduce the impact of HIV infection through anti-retro-viral therapy. The proposed algorithm is designed using a deterministic H

Deciphering dengue fever transmission on higher-order networks.

Dengue fever is a viral infection transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. Modeling dengue transmission is crucial for control, given its risk to half the world's population. This paper develops a host-to-host transmission model within hypergraphs constructed from simplicial complexes. Necessary conditions for the emergence of Turing instability in dengue dynamical systems naturally coupled on hypergraphs are derived. Furthermore, a multiplex network framework is constructed on hypergraphs by incorporating the influence of information on dengue transmission, and expressi

Dynamics and Numerical Analysis of a Multi-Patch Influenza Transmission Model with Population Migration and Daily Commuting.

Human mobility plays an important role in the disease spatial transmission. In this paper, a multi-patch SEIR Influenza model incorporating long-term population migration and daily commuting was formulated to describe Influenza interregional spreading. Mathematically, the explicit expression for basic reproduction number was derived by the next-generation matrix method, and the globally asymptotically stability of disease free equilibrium and the unique positive equilibrium were rigorously proved. Numerically, taking the end of 2025 influenza epidemic in Shanxi province as an example, the mode

Multiplayer social dilemmas in completely mixed populations and networks of mixing communities.

Human and non-human animals often form highly structured social systems in which individuals interact preferentially within specific groups, shaped by habitat structure, movement patterns, or social preferences. We consider a model that captures the interplay between social structure and emerging behaviour. Individuals are probabilistically distributed across the nodes of a spatial network representing interaction sites such as resource patches, territorial areas, or social hubs. Individuals present at the same node interact through a multiplayer game, so group structure is not imposed but ins

Half of what? Number bisection, line bisection, number line bisection and estimation differ in their hemodynamic signatures.

Spatial and numerical processing are tightly connected capacities of human cognition. It is assumed that space and numbers draw on common neural networks. Here, we used functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) during spatial-numerical bisection tasks to assess neural activity in a natural production paradigm. Thirty-six neurotypical participants used a touch pen during line bisection, number line bisection, number line estimation, number bisection, and an active neutral task (figure-copying). Accordingly, we systematically varied spatial and numerical requirements in a series of four bise

Vector Traits Shape Disease Persistence: A Predator-Prey Approach to Dengue.

Dengue continues to pose a major global threat, infecting nearly 390 million people annually. Recognizing the importance of studying vector biology and therein vector competence ( v c ), recent research focuses on mosquito parameters to inform transmission modeling and vector control strategies. This study models relationship between Aedes vectors and dengue pathogens, highlighting v c as a key driver of within-vector infection dynamics and endemic persistence. Using a predator-prey framework, we show that endemic conditions emerge naturally from the biological interplay between vector's str

Hyper-exponential growth in an epidemic model: some explicit solutions and their significance.

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the ability of epidemics to evolve through the emergence of successive strains of greater infectiousness, which prompted the insight that hyper-exponential growth (HEG) can arise in the development of an epidemic. The phenomenon of HEG has intrigued many researchers, because of some radical differences from exponential growth such as the finite-time singularity. However, the actual mechanism of HEG was usually hidden or needed to be added phenomenologically. Thus, there was little insight into how constraints would be triggered. In this study, we explore an SI

Dynamic analysis of an HIV stochastic time-delay differential equations incorporating two infection pathways and CTL immune response.

We propose a five-dimensional stochastic time-delay differential equation model that includes virus-to-cell infection, silent and active cell-cell transmissions and CTL immune response. Using mathematical methods, the non-degenerate five-dimensional stochastic delay differential equation model is transformed into a degenerate eight-dimensional stochastic differential equation model. The existence of a unique global positive solution is demonstrated. Then, by establishing a suitable Lyapunov function, we obtain the existence of a stationary Markov process when the stochastic CTL-activated repro

Chemotactic Feedback Controls Patterning in Hybrid Tumor-Stroma Model.

Motivated by an ongoing collaboration with clinical oncologists and pathologists, we develop a hybrid partial differential equation-ordinary differential equation (PDE-ODE) framework that captures (i) competition between susceptible and resistant phenotypes, (ii) stromal state switching, and (iii) a clinically realistic open-loop, single-dose therapeutic agent I with diffusion and clearance. Clinical management of solid tumors is increasingly limited by spatial heterogeneity and therapy-induced resistance niches that are difficult to predict from well-mixed models. We establish a rigorous math
