PURPOSE: The success of zygomatic implants following the two-stage, as well as the immediate loading, concept has been well documented. This graftless approach for the treatment of the completely edentulous resorbed maxilla allows for rehabilitation with an implant-supported fixed prosthesis. The purpose of this prospective study is to report on the 7-year follow-up of patients treated with zygomatic implants in conjunction with two to four anterior maxillary implants placed into immediate function and restored with a definitive fixed prosthesis.

We report a case of dentigerous cyst of the maxilla and maxillary sinus that caused the ectopic displacement of an unerupted tooth into the orbital rim and floor. After an incisional biopsy, marsupialization of the lesion promoted its involution and stimulated osteogenesis. This in turn simplified the surgical enucleation of the specimen and removal of the unerupted tooth without the excessive loss of the bony contours of the maxilla.

Calcifying epithelial odontogenic tumor (CEOT) is a rare benign odontogenic tumor, known as Pindborg tumor. Although ulcer formation was reported in one previously involving the peripheral maxilla, such change of the overlying mucosa has been reported in intraosseous CEOT. We report maxillary CEOT in a patient who complained of spontaneous pain due to extensive ulcer formation of the oral mucosa.

This article reviews some of the complications associated with the use of a chisel to achieve separation of the pterygomaxillary region during the Lefort I osteotomy. A modification of this surgical procedure is proposed whereby no chisel is used to complete the maxillary disjunction. A series of more than 200 consecutive Lefort I osteotomies using this technique confirms the value of this modification.

The results of delayed bone-grafting procedures in a group of twenty-four cleft patients are reported. All patients benefitted from closure of their fistulas. The need for a prosthesis was eliminated in twelve patients, and eight of the remaining twelve patients required only a three-unit bridge. In 15 cases of ordinary Le Fort I osteotomy with simultaneous vertical displacement, the behaviour of the maxilla in respect to vertical movement was examined. It was observed that out of 12 maxilla which had been tilted downwards, 10 moved upwards again. One maxilla remained stable and another one moved further downwards.
