Maxillary sinus marrow hyperplasia in sickle cell anemia.

Marrow hyperplasia is a sequela of sickle cell anemia (SCA) and may be seen in the skull in children after 5 years of age [1]. The facial bones, except for the mandible and orbits, are usually not involved [1-3]. We report an unusual case of a 28-month-old black boy with SCA who presented with extensive marrow hyperplasia of the maxillary sinuses in addition to severe calvarial and mandibular changes. The imaging characteristics on CT (similar to other sites of marrow hyperplasia) and MR (low signal on both T1 and T2 sequences) should aid in making the correct diagnosis.

Unilateral congenital choanal atresia and maxillary sinus development.

Most authors feel that the maxillary sinus and dento-alveolar arch do not develop normally in case of choanal atresia. This as explained by respiratory deficiency on the atretic side. A series of 11 cases of unilateral choanal atresia, either untreated or treated after the period of maximum growth, have been studied by clinical examination, serial X-rays and cephalometric tracings in order to compare atretic and normal sides. No significant difference has been found, neither for size nor shape of the maxillary sinus. These observations are therefore in contradiction to earlier reported finding…

Dentigerous cyst involving maxillary sinus: report of case.

The dentigerous cyst is generally discovered during routine radiographic examination although it may be found because of secondary infection. Although the patient described in this report had symptoms of infection, discovery of the lesion was late in the course of development of the cyst as it grew to a large size within the antral cavity without causing external expansion. The panoramic radiograph is an excellent method to screen for central jaw disease but may not allow adequate assessment of processes involving the maxillary sinuses. As illustrated by this report, when the absence of a thir…

Relation between orthodontic malocclusion and maxillary sinus volume.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to determine maxillary sinus volume (MSV) in different skeletal malocclusion classes and the correlation between MSV and craniofacial morphology on Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT). MATERIALS AND METHODS: The study was performed retrospectively on CBCT images of individuals aged 12-24. A total of 129 patients (70 females, 59 males) with a normal vertical growth pattern (27° ≤ SNGoMe ≤ 38°) were divided into three groups according to malocclusion. Group 1 consisted of Class I (1 ≤ ANB ≤ 4) (n = 46) patients, Group 2 consisted of Class II (ANB > 4) (n = 47) pati…

Localized Maxillary Sinus Papilloma: Management of Incidental Lesion.

Most maxillary sinus papillomas are confirmed when they have extended beyond the nasal cavity and are rarely found while localized in the maxillary sinus. We experienced two cases of localized papilloma in the maxillary sinus. Case 1 was a 69-year-old man with a localized left maxillary sinus lesion detected during a routine imaging examination. As the lesion was likely to be papilloma, we recommended that the patient undergo diagnostic surgery, which he refused. He experienced bloody rhinorrhea 1 year and 9 months after the first visit, and computed tomography (CT) showed increased lesions an…

Radioanatomic study of maxillary sinus palatal process pneumatization.

OBJECTIVES: To perform a detailed analysis of palatal process pneumatization (PPP) on cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images. METHODS: This study consisted of 376 maxillary sinuses of 188 patients aged 22-88 years who had maxillary CBCT scans. The radioanatomy of the PPP was evaluated at distances 4, 8, 16, and 24 mm posterior to incisive foramen. The types of PPP were classified as follows: type I: maxillary sinus palatal process non-gasified; type II: palatal process gasification into the nasal floor, but not more than half of the width of the nasal floor; and type III: palatal process…

Primary Maxillary Sinus Plasmablastic Lymphoma in HIV/AIDS.

Classically, the HIV/AIDS-related lymphomas are of the B cell type and involve the central nervous system and the abdominal cavity. Primary maxillary sinus lymphoma is rare. Plasmablastic lymphoma (PBL) is an aggressive form of non-Hodgkinvs lymphoma, and is extremely rare. Here we present a case of plasmablastic lymphoma with primary site being maxillary sinus, a rare location.

CT maxillary sinus evaluation--A retrospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Proximity of the dental roots to the sinus floor makes dental disease a probable cause of maxillary sinusitis. The aim of this study was to find out if maxillary sinus pathologic changes were more prevalent in patients with dental disease and to evaluate the performance of computed tomography (CT) in analyzing and detecting apical periodontitis and other odontogenic causes on the maxillary sinusitis etiology in a Portuguese Caucasian population. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Retrospective cohort study. The total sample of 504 patients and their CT was included in this study. The patients …

Endoscopic resection of anterolateral maxillary sinus inverted papillomas.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Endoscopic medial maxillectomy (EMM) has become the surgical procedure of choice for resection of maxillary sinus inverted papillomas (IPs). Traditionally, IPs pedicled on the anterior and/or lateral walls of the maxillary sinus have required an adjuvant Caldwell-Luc approach due to decreased visualization with transnasal endoscopy in these locations. The objective of the current study is to evaluate outcomes following endoscopic resection of anterolateral maxillary sinus IPs. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective case series. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: Over 6 years, a total of 35 pati…

Bone production by human maxillary sinus mucosa cells.

The Schneider membrane is the mucosa that covers the inner part of the maxillary sinus cavities. The free surface is a ciliated pseudostratified epithelium, while the deeper portion is a highly vascularized connective tissue. The stromal fraction, bordering the bony wall of the sinus, after tooth loss can exhibit increased osteoclastic activity resulting in resorption of the bone in the posterior maxilla. Goal of our study was to isolate and characterize mesenchymal progenitors in the Schneider's membrane connective net and to evaluate their self ability to differentiate toward osteoblastic li…

[Sinus lifting operation peculiarities after radical maxillary sinusotomy].

Taking into account possible development of some pathology in maxillae alveolar processes not always the fulfilled orthopantomographic study allowed to describe in full the clinical picture of maxillary sinuses. In case of such pathology it was necessary to carry out therapeutic or surgical sanation. After operation of radical maxillary sinusotomy the question about reconstruction operation of the sinus lifting type advisability was rather problematic. We suggested the scheme of such operation including in the first place volumetric X-ray patient's examination and also original technique of su…

Maxillary sinus mucocoeles--10 cases--8 treated endoscopically.

Maxillary sinus mucocoeles are rare, but may cause significant problems outside the sinus including diplopia and cheek swelling. We present 9 patients suffering from maxillary sinus mucocoele, including one patient with bilateral involvement, representing 10 involved sinuses. Eight sinuses were treated endoscopically and followed-up for 3 to more than 6 years; one of these developed a recurrence. Two sinuses were treated using a classical external approach (Caldwell-Luc), one at the beginning of our series, and one as the endoscopic technique was difficult to perform due to loss of anatomical …
