[Clarithromycin versus amoxicillin-clavulanic acid in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis in adults].

The efficacy and safety of clarithromycin and amoxicillin-clavulanate in the treatment of acute maxillary sinusitis was compared in an open multicenter outpatient study. Two hundred and eighty patients were randomly assigned to receive either clarithromycin 500 mg 12-hourly or amoxicillin-clavulanate 500 mg 8-hourly orally for 8 days. Clinical and radiologic signs and symptoms, and sinus culture were not significantly different in the two treatment groups. A clinical and radiological success or improvement was achieved after the end of treatment in 115/134 (85.8%) patients treated with clarith…

Odontogenic Maxillary Sinusitis: A Case Report of Interdisciplinary Care in the Context of an ORL Emergency.

Odontogenic maxillary sinusitis (OMS) represents an important cause of unilateral sinus disease and can lead to persistent symptoms and repeated courses of antibiotics if unrecognized. Prompt identification of a dental source is essential to prevent chronicity and avoid unnecessary interventions. We report the case of a 40-year-old woman who presented with a 3-week history of persistent right maxillary sinus pain, unresponsive to two antibiotic prescriptions. On examination, she had a buccal collection in the upper right maxilla, close to a previous Caldwell-Luc surgical window. She did not pr…

Bilateral septa in the sphenoid and maxillary sinuses: a cadaveric case report and literature review.

BACKGROUND: A thorough understanding of paranasal sinus anatomy and its variations is essential for accurate diagnosis, effective treatment of sinus-related conditions, and safe surgical intervention. Preoperative assessment of sinus morphology plays a vital role in minimizing intraoperative risks and postoperative complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: During routine dissection of a 78-year-old female cadaver at the Department of Biomedical Sciences, Mercer University School of Medicine (Columbus, GA), a unique case of bilateral septa in both the sphenoid and maxillary sinuses was observed.

Volumetric analysis of maxillary sinuses for gender determination: Manual vs.3D segmentation.

The effectiveness of manual calculations versus 3D segmentation techniques in volumetric analysis of maxillary sinuses for gender determination is of interest. Maxillary sinuses, which vary anatomically due to factors like age, ethnicity, and gender, are crucial in forensic and anthropological contexts. Traditional methods, relying on two-dimensional imaging, are often time-consuming and prone to errors, whereas 3D segmentation offers a more precise and efficient approach. This research evaluates both methods in terms of reliability, accuracy, and practical use, potentially influencing their a

Middle meatal nasal recesses of the maxillary sinuses and dangerously modified nasal anatomy.

Pneumatisation of the maxillary sinus (MS) is variable. The archived cone-beam computed tomography file of a 54-year-old female was retrospectively evaluated anatomically. Nasal or retrobullar recesses of the MSs (NRMS) were found. The MSs were bicameral. NRMSs extended from the postero-lateral chambers of the MSs into the lateral nasal walls. The right NRMS was reached superior to the middle turbinate and the ethmoidal bulla was applied on its anterior side. The left NRMS had two medial pouch-like ends, one beneath the ethmoidal bulla and the other on the anterior side of the basal lamella of

A Case of Fungal Maxillary Sinusitis Extending to the Contralateral Side Through the Nasal Septum.

Fungal rhinosinusitis (FRS) presents as various phenotypes ranging from asymptomatic colonization to life-threatening infections. Here, we report an atypical case of FRS of the left maxillary sinus that extended to the contralateral maxillary sinus through the nasal septum. An 80-year-old woman with a history of osteoporosis was referred to our hospital for further management of headaches and chronic rhinosinusitis. Computed tomography (CT) of the sinus revealed a mass lesion with calcification in the left maxillary sinus, extending to the contralateral maxillary sinus through the nasal septum

A case of coinfection in a chronic maxillary sinusitis of odontogenic origin: identification of Dialister pneumosintes.

INTRODUCTION: In this report, we discuss the case of a 39-year-old woman presenting with a case of chronic maxillary sinusitis. METHODS: Dialister pneumosintes, Staphylococcus epidermidis, and Peptostreptococcus spp. were isolated from endosinusal samples obtained during surgery. The patient showed extensive periodontopathy and had undergone prior endodontic treatment for endodontic infection of teeth #13, #14, and #15, which failed and presumably acted as a bridge for the sinusal infection. After nasosinusal surgery, consisting of opening and toilet of the maxillary sinus, combined with extr…

Incidence of maxillary sinusitis and oro-antral fistulae in bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw.

OBJECTIVE: Bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (BRONJ) is a serious side-effect of bisphosphonate therapy. In the majority of cases BRONJ occurs in the mandible. As a consequence a detailed investigation of BRONJ of the maxilla and in particular of involvement of the maxillary sinus has largely so far been neglected. The aim of this study was to analyse the frequency of maxillary sinusitis and oro-antral fistulae in BRONJ of the maxilla. SUBJECTS AND METHODS: A retrospective multicentre analysis was carried out in three Departments of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery focussing on pa…

Deposition of aerosolized particles in the maxillary sinuses before and after endoscopic sinus surgery.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggest that topical therapy is beneficial in many conditions underlying chronic sinusitis. Current literature has documented low aerosolized particle deposition efficiency into the paranasal sinuses. Mathematical modeling suggests that three factors influence the deposition efficiency: particle size, pressure gradient, and size of the sinus ostium. Ostium size is the most dominant factor. Therefore, we sought to determine if maxillary antrostomy and ethmoidectomy would increase the deposition efficiency. METHODS: Five cadavers underwent pre- and postoperative scint
