The impact of maternal systemic diseases on the occurrence of cleft lip and palate in newborns: a narrative review.

Cleft lip and palate (CLP) is a prevalent congenital anomaly of the maxillofacial region, characterized by abnormal openings in the lip or palate. This condition, affecting approximately 1 in 700 newborns globally, can manifest as cleft lip only, cleft palate only, or both. The etiology of CLP remains multifactorial, involving genetic and environmental influences, with maternal systemic diseases during pregnancy emerging as significant risk factors. Conditions such as circulatory disorders, endocrine and metabolic disorders, infectious diseases, and autoimmune diseases have been associated wit

Mandibular osteoma in the encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis.

INTRODUCTION: Encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis is a rare congenital disorder characterized by an abnormal development of adipose tissue, and is of unknown pathogenesis. Catherine Haberland and Maurice Perou first diagnosed this disorder in 1970. To our knowledge, approximately 25 patients have been reported with this diagnosis but so far, only 1 patient has been reported in Poland by Roszkowski and Dabrowski in 1997. At that time she was a 13-year-old girl, who was neurosurgically treated. CASE REPORT: The authors followed the same patient (now 21 years old), who was referred to the Depar

A case of concentrated growth factor gel to fill the defect after large jaw cyst enucleation.

Management of large jaw cyst is challenging since high risks including pathologic fracture, limited opening, and insufficient bone healing occur after enucleation. The current case of concentrated growth factor (CGF) gel to fill defect after enucleation of large jaw cyst is rare. A 12-year-old boy with pain and swelling for 4 months in the left mandible region made a medical consultation at our hospital. Computerized tomography scan indicated that cystic lesion was found in the left mandible region. In this case, we present a patient with large jaw cyst (31 mm × 44 mm × 53 mm) who received enu

Computed tomography findings of Crouzon syndrome: A case report.

Crouzon syndrome is a genetic condition characterized by a premature fusion of skull sutures resulting in head and facial deformities. Crouzon syndrome is usually suspected at birth through physical examination or in the antenatal period via ultrasonographic assessment. Once Crouzon syndrome is suspected, advanced imaging methods such as three-dimensional computed tomography must be requested, showing early signs of cranial sutures fusion. In this paper, we present a case of a six-year-old girl who was taken to a pediatrician control appointment due to abnormal facies. During the physical exam

Salivary gland choristoma in the buccinator muscle: A case report and literature review.

UNLABELLED: Salivary gland choristoma (SGCh) is defined as the presence of normal salivary tissue in an abnormal location. It is a rare entity in oral and maxillofacial region and its ethiology is unknown. The typical presentation of salivary gland heterotopia is an asymptomatic mass that may or may not produce saliva. Some examples of ectopic salivary tissue in the pituitary gland, in the lymph nodes, in the middle ear, in the neck, in the jaw, in the thyroid gland, in the mediastinum and in the rectum have been documented in literature. We report the case of a 61-year-old male presented with

Craniofacial characteristics evidenced in Bartsocas-Papas syndrome from birth to five years. Case report.

Bartsocas-Papas Syndrome (BPS) is a rare congenital disorder, first described in 1972. It is usually characterized by neonatal or intrauterine death, and, as such, only 26 cases have been reported. Physical manifestations such as antecubital and popliteal pterygia (webbing), syndactyly of fingers, toes and talipes are frequently reported. However, oral, facial, cranial and dental anomalies are often overlooked. This case focuses on the latter anomalies and the effect they have on the facial growth of a 5-year-old patient.

Management of a large diffuse maxillofacial arteriovenous malformation previously treated with ligation of ipsilateral arterial supply.

A 32 year-old male presented with a pulsatile facial mass with palpable thrill and audible bruit. Imaging revealed a very large diffuse left-sided facial arteriovenous malformation with extensive bilateral supply, as well as a previously ligated left external carotid artery. Endovascular treatment was required to control associated hemorrhagic events as well as for palliation and was delivered via the contralateral and ipsilateral collateral supply because of ligation of the direct route to the nidus. In addition, the patient received intravenous bevacizumab and intraarterial bleomycin therapy

Interaction between Foxc1 and Fgf8 during mammalian jaw patterning and in the pathogenesis of syngnathia.

Syngnathia (bony fusion of the upper and lower jaw) is a rare human congenital condition, with fewer than sixty cases reported in the literature. Syngnathia typically presents as part of a complex syndrome comprising widespread oral and maxillofacial anomalies, but it can also occur in isolation. Most cartilage, bone, and connective tissue of the head and face is derived from neural crest cells. Hence, congenital craniofacial anomalies are often attributed to defects in neural crest cell formation, survival, migration, or differentiation. The etiology and pathogenesis of syngnathia however rem

Causes of the difficult airway.

Recognizing a potentially difficult airway is important in avoiding a life-threatening emergency. There are 2 separate scenarios for considering the difficult airway: difficult mask ventilation (DMV) and difficult tracheal intubation (DTI). DMV can be described as lacking the ability to maintain oxygen saturation or lacking the ability to reverse signs of inadequate ventilation with positive-pressure mask ventilation under general anesthesia. DTI remains constant among anesthesia-related patient injuries, and is the third most common respiratory-related episode leading to death and possible br

Applications of coronoid process as a bone graft in maxillofacial surgery.

The coronoid process can be easily harvested as a donor bone by an intraoral approach during many maxillofacial surgery procedures. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the utility of autogenous coronoid process bone grafts for maxillofacial reconstructive surgery. Twelve patients, who underwent coronoid process grafts for reconstruction of maxillofacial deformities due to trauma, alveolar atrophy, or temporomandibular joint ankylosis, were included in the study. There were 3 orbital defects after extended maxillectomy, 1 blowout fracture of the orbit, 2 cases of reconstruction after temp

Circulatory C-type natriuretic peptide reduces mucopolysaccharidosis-associated craniofacial hypoplasia in vivo.

Skeletal alterations in the head and neck region, such as midfacial hypoplasia, foramen magnum stenosis and spinal canal stenosis, are commonly observed in patients with mucopolysaccharidosis (MPS). However, enzyme replacement therapy (ERT), one of the major treatment approaches for MPS, shows limited efficacy for skeletal conditions. In this study, we analysed the craniofacial morphology of mice with MPS type VII, and investigated the underlying mechanisms promoting jaw deformities in these animals. Furthermore, we investigated the effects of C-type natriuretic peptide (CNP), a potent endocho
