Separating potential source exposure from background exposure in subsistence populations in developing countries.

Risk assessment methods of developed countries have prescribed exposure assumptions for calculating health risks that are generally inappropriate for developing countries because of population, cultural, and social differences. For example, populations in developing countries are often subsistence users of natural resources with a more outdoor-oriented lifestyle. Assessments should thus measure specific dietary intake rates and contact rates with environmental media. Chemical analyses of food, environmental media, and any biomarkers of exposure should include a carefully matched reference popu

"Context, Please?" The Effects of Appearance- and Health-Frames and Media Context on Body-Related Outcomes.

Promoting health-related behaviors such as healthy eating or doing sports are important to counteract the problem of obesity, which is on the rise. In this regard, initial studies suggest that appearance compared to health framing can lead to negative body-related outcomes in young women. This study aimed to extend these findings by investigating the role of the context. Furthermore, as previous studies focused on young women only, we considered a more diverse sample. This seems especially important as health campaigns focusing on healthy eating and sports should appeal to a more diverse popul

Emergence of antibiotic resistant Streptococcus sanguis in dental plaque of children after frequent antibiotic therapy.

PURPOSE: In the pediatric population, several different antibiotic regimens are currently recommended for the treatment of otitis media. This study investigated whether therapy for otitis media was associated with the emergence of antibiotic-resistant oral bacteria. METHODS: Streptococcus sanguis (S. sanguis) was isolated from supragingival dental plaque of children after a recent course of antibiotic. The isolated strains were tested for resistance to penicillin, amoxicillin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and erythromycin and compared to isolated strains from age- and sex-matched control su

Influence of appearance-related TV commercials on body image state.

This study investigates the influence of media exposure on body image state in eating-disordered (ED) patients. The attitudinal and perceptual components of body image are assessed, as well as any associations with dysfunctional cognitions and behavioral consequences. Twenty-five ED patients and 25 non-ED controls (ND) viewed commercials either featuring appearance (AC; 5 min) or not featuring appearance (NC; 5 min). Both perceptual and attitudinal body image components changed markedly after the AC condition for ED patients, compared with the ND group and NC condition. Cognitions referring to…

Social media use, brand engagement, and tobacco product initiation among youth: Evidence from a prospective cohort study.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate whether frequent social media use and liking/following tobacco brand accounts was associated with increased risk of tobacco and polytobacco initiation over approximately 1-year follow-up among youth with no prior tobacco use. METHODS: Associations between measures of social media engagement (daily social media use and liking/following tobacco brands) and tobacco initiation risk were examined using data from Waves 2 and 3 (2014-2015) of the US Population Assessment for Tobacco and Health study. Separate log-binomial models, accounting for missing data via multiple imputa

Iodine content of human tissues after administration of iodine containing drugs or contrast media.

Total iodine contents were determined in 209 bioptic or autoptic specimens of various extrathyroidal tissues. Fifty-two of the 80 subjects examined had no previous exposure to excessive iodine, 24 were tested after administration of x-ray contrast media and 4 after treatment with various iodine containing drugs. Unexposed subjects had tissue iodine contents (mean +/- SD) ranging from 0.85 +/- 0.17 microgram/100 g in the brain and 9.78 +/- 2.75 microgram/100 g in the liver of adults. A significantly lower iodine concentration was found in the liver of newborns (2.79 +/- 1.00 microgram, p less t

The influence of smoking imagery on the smoking intentions of young people: testing a media interpretation model.

PURPOSE: To assess a theoretical model of adolescents' exposure to films, perceptions of smoking imagery in film, and smoking intentions. METHODS: A structured questionnaire was completed by 3041 Year 8 (aged 12 years) and Year 12 (aged 16 years) students from 25 schools in Auckland, New Zealand. The survey assessed the relationships among exposure to films, attitudes about smoking imagery, perceptions of smoking prevalence and its acceptability, and expectations of smoking in the future. Measures included exposure to films, perceived pervasiveness of, and nonchalant attitudes about smoking i

Inflammation markers correlate with common carotid intima-media thickness in patients perinatally infected with human immunodeficiency virus 1.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate common carotid intima-media thickness in a cohort of patients who were vertically infected with human immunodeficiency virus 1 (HIV-1). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional observational study. Human immunodeficiency virus 1-infected patients were compared with age-, sex-, and body mass index-matched healthy participants. Common carotid intima-media thickness was measured in all participants on both sides of the neck, and the mean intima-media thickness was calculated. Metabolic parameters and markers of inflammation were measured only in HIV-1-infected patients.

Pulmonary vascular and alveolar development in preterm lambs chronically colonized with Ureaplasma parvum.

Ureaplasma species, the most commonly isolated microorganisms in women with chorioamnionitis, are associated with preterm delivery. Chorioamnionitis increases the risk and severity of bronchopulmonary dysplasia and persistent pulmonary hypertension in newborns. It is not known whether the timing of exposure to inflammation in utero is an important contributor to the pathogenesis of bronchopulmonary dysplasia. We hypothesized that chronic inflammation would alter the pulmonary air space and vascular development after 70 days of exposure to infection. Pregnant ewes were given intra-amniotic inje

Comparing Risk Profiles of Nicotine Pouch and Smokeless Tobacco Use in U.S. Adolescents: A Machine Learning Analysis.

Background: This study identified and compared the risk profiles associated with nicotine pouch (NP) and smokeless tobacco (ST) use among ad … stic curve (AUROC) values were 0.946 (NP) and 0.890 (ST). Conclusions: Given that NP-related social media exposure emerged as a key correlate of adolescent NP use, enhanced monitoring of social media platforms, stricter enforcement of digital advertising restrictions, and the development of counter-marketing initiatives may be warranted.

Sexual and gender identity differences in mental health concerns as a function of social media use and cyberbullying among U.S. youth.

As adolescents increasingly engage with social media, concerns have emerged about its potential implications for youth mental health and about disparities in digital experiences by sexual orientation (SO) and gender identity (GI). However, the mechanisms linking social media use (SMU) to mental health and SOGI disparities in digital contexts remain unclear. Using nationally representative data from the 2023 Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS; n = 12,773), the current study examines associations between SMU, cyberbullying, and mental health concerns (i.e., sadness and suicidal ideation), with att

The role of media in reducing and reinforcing stigma: A randomized controlled trial investigating the impact of positive and negative representations of visible difference.

OBJECTIVES: Individuals with visible differences often experience appearance-related stigma and discrimination, reinforced by negative media portrayals. In contrast, positive portrayals may challenge stereotypes and promote acceptance. This study examined whether exposure to positive, negative or neutral images of visible difference influences appearance-related stigma, body appreciation and broad conceptualizations of beauty. It was hypothesized that positive images would decrease stigma and increase body appreciation and broad conceptualizations of beauty, whereas negative images would incre

Trust undone: How COVID-19 coverage shaped scientists' trust in journalism and their willingness to engage with the media.

This study explores how scientists' experiences during the pandemic influenced their trust in journalism and their willingness to engage with the media. The study employed a survey approach, collecting data from 4089 scientists affiliated with German universities and research institutions. Trust in journalism was measured across five dimensions: appropriate topic selection, accurate representation, proper fact selection, fair assessment, and desirable impact. Structural equation modeling was used to analyze the relationships between dissatisfaction with pandemic-era media coverage, trust in jo

Strava use in competitive female runners: A qualitative exploration of perceived utility and psychosocial implications.

Strava combines social media connectivity with the utility of fitness tracking, fostering a community of over 150 million users. While social media and fitness apps influence athletes' psychosocial wellbeing, research on Strava's impact, especially among competitive female runners, is scarce. Existing literature suggests women may experience both positive and negative psychosocial effects from fitness tracking and social media use; however, these effects have not been examined within the unique context of Strava. The purpose of the study was to explore the utility of Strava and its perceived p
