The nature and extent of retrograde amnesia in patients with medial temporal lobe (MTL) lesions is currently under debate. While some investigators propose a temporally limited role for the MTL in episodic and semantic memory, others claim that MTL structures are needed for episodic memories of one's entire lifetime, and that only semantic memory becomes independent of the MTL. To address this issue, we tested two amnesic patients, H.M. and W.R., with bilateral MTL lesions on a series of remote memory tests that together distinguished episodic memory from semantic memory performance. Notably,

INTRODUCTION: Converging evidence from studies of patients suffering focal brain lesions and results from animal models led to the notion of two functionally and structurally distinct memory systems, declarative-explicit-episodic and procedural-implicit-skill.
AIMS: Assessment of skill acquisition and procedural memory in patients after blunt traumatic brain injury (TBI) who suffer from deficit of explicit (episodic) memory in comparison to patients without such a deficit.
METHODS: Comparison of skill acquisition in the Finger Opposition Sequence task in two patients after TBI presenting wit

Objectives: Difficulties with prospective memory (PM) are not routinely assessed in persons with multiple sclerosis (MS) even though they can impact daily functioning. This study aimed to examine the preliminary criterion and ecological validity of a highly abbreviated Memory for Intentions Test (MIST) intended to serve as an initial screening of PM in persons with MS. Methods: Participants (n = 112) were classified as impaired if they performed 1.5 standard deviations below the normative mean on the MIST. Individual MIST trials with adequate difficulty and discriminability were examined using

Introduction: While short-term cognitive impairment following electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is well described and acknowledged, the relationship between ECT and persistent memory impairment, particularly of autobiographical memory, has been controversial. Methods: We describe the case of a 70-year-old consultant neurophysiologist, AW, who developed prominent, selective autobiographical memory loss following two courses of ECT for treatment-resistant depression. Results: His performance on standard measures of IQ, semantic and episodic memory, executive function and mood was normal, while he

Our day-to-day experiences are often similar to one another, occurring in the same place at the same time of day, with common people and objects, and with a shared purpose. Humans have an episodic memory to represent unique, personal events that are rich in detail [1]. For this to occur, at least two basic neural mechanisms are required: one to orthogonalize or "separate" overlapping input patterns at encoding and another to reinstate or "complete" memories from partial cues at retrieval [2-6]. To what extent do these purported "pattern separation" and "pattern completion" mechanisms rely on d

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is characterized by a dysfunctional processing of autobiographical memories. We review the following core domains of deficit: systematic biases favoring materials of negative emotional valence; diminished access and response to positive memories; a recollection of overgeneral memories in detriment of specific autobiographical memories; and the role of ruminative processes and avoidance when dealing with autobiographical memories. Furthermore, we review evidence from functional neuroimaging studies of neural circuits activated by the recollection of autobiographi

Frontopolar cortex (FPC), for a long time elusive to functional description, is now associated with a wide range of cognitive processes. Prominent accounts of FPC function emerged from studies of memory (e.g., episodic and prospective memory; EM and PM, respectively) and of executive function (e.g., planning, multi-tasking, relational reasoning, cognitive branching, etc). In recent years, FPC function has begun to be described within the context of value-based decision making in terms of monitoring the value of alternatives and optimizing cognitive resources to balance the explore/exploit dile

BACKGROUND: Electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) is the most effective treatment of major depression, but autobiographical memory loss may limit its use. Despite previous attempts to synthesise the literature, the nature of autobiographical memory loss after ECT is still debated.
AIMS: To provide an overview of the effect of ECT on autobiographical memory in patients with depression and explore whether the effect is temporary or permanent. Furthermore, we wanted to analyse if ECT parameters or clinical information are associated with this effect.

OBJECTIVES: To develop a test of autobiographical memory for monitoring of older people during a course of electroconvulsive therapy (ECT).
METHOD: A list of events commonly experienced in later life was gathered from older people (n = 26) at a psychogeriatric day clinic and from psychiatrists (n = 23) who work with older depressed patients. The most common events were chosen as question domains for an autobiographical memory interview. This was piloted with 12 severely depressed older patients.
RESULTS: A list of 15 common life events was developed. After pilot testing, a final 30-item ques

As a clinical model of hippocampal dysfunction, transient global amnesia (TGA) causes reversible memory disturbance. While episodic memory deficits in TGA patients have been extensively described, data regarding semantic memory involvement are sparse and contradictory. We report impaired semantic fluency performance in 16 patients with hippocampal lesions on MRI during acute TGA compared to their performance one day later and to that of 20 healthy subjects. Our findings support the involvement of the hippocampus in semantic retrieval.

Neuropsychological and neuroimaging data suggest that the self-memory system can be fractionated into three functionally independent systems processing personal information at several levels of abstraction, including episodic memories of one's life (episodic autobiographical memory, EAM), semantic knowledge of facts about one's life (semantic autobiographical memory, SAM), and semantic knowledge of one's personality [conceptual self, (CS)]. Through the study of two developmental amnesic patients suffering of neonatal brain injuries, we explored how the different facets of the self-memory syste

The relationship between testosterone (T) and cognition has yielded conflicting evidence, showing both positive and negative influences of T on cognitive performance. The association between free testosterone (FT) and cognition was revisited in a large population-based sample of 1276 women and 1107 men (35-90 years of age), assessed individually on visuospatial, verbal fluency, semantic, and episodic memory tasks. For men, higher FT levels were associated with better visuospatial abilities, semantic memory, and episodic memory, with greater positive influence with increasing age. Statistical c

Memory constitutes a fundamental cognitive domain, and converging evidence suggests that its dysfunction represents a prominent, though not exclusive, transdiagnostic dimension across major psychiatric disorders. This review aimed to integrate neurobiological, cognitive, and clinical evidence on domain-specific memory impairments in mood, anxiety, obsessive-compulsive, post-traumatic stress, and psychotic disorders. A comprehensive search was conducted on PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science up to November 2025 for peer-reviewed studies examining short-term, working, long-term, episodic, semanti

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article highlights the dissociable human memory systems of episodic, semantic, and procedural memory in the context of neurologic illnesses known to adversely affect specific neuroanatomic structures relevant to each memory system.
RECENT FINDINGS: Advances in functional neuroimaging and refinement of neuropsychological and bedside assessment tools continue to support a model of multiple memory systems that are distinct yet complementary and to support the potential for one system to be engaged as a compensatory strategy when a counterpart system fails.

OBJECTIVE: To test the cognitive dedifferentiation hypothesis that cognitive abilities become increasingly correlated in late life.
METHODS: Participants are 174 older persons without dementia at the beginning of a longitudinal clinical-pathologic cohort study. At annual intervals for 6 to 15 years prior to death, they completed a battery of cognitive performance tests from which previously established composite measures of episodic memory, semantic memory, working memory, and perceptual speed were derived. At death, there was a uniform neuropathologic assessment and levels of diffuse plaques

Novel tests of semantic memory (SM)-for example, memory for news events (NE; news facts) or famous personalities-are useful for estimating the severity of retrograde amnesia. Individuals with mild cognitive impairment exhibit relatively intact SM/language on traditional neuropsychological tests but exhibit consistent impairment on novel tests of SM, suggesting novel SM tests are dissimilar from traditional SM tests. To identify the relationship between NE memory and traditional cognitive measures, older adults (N = 51) completed a traditional neuropsychological battery and the Retrograde Memor

Healthy aging is associated with episodic memory decline, particularly in the ability to encode and retrieve object-context associations (context memory). Neuropsychological and neuroimaging studies have highlighted the importance of the medial temporal lobes (MTL) in supporting episodic memory across the lifespan. However, given the functional heterogeneity of the MTL, volumetric declines in distinct regions may impact performance on specific episodic memory tasks, and affect the function of the large-scale neurocognitive networks supporting episodic memory encoding and retrieval. In the curr

Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA) is a neurodegenerative syndrome that typically presents with predominant visual and spatial impairments. The early diagnostic criteria specify a relative sparing of functioning in other cognitive domains, including executive functions, language, and episodic memory, yet little is known of the cognitive profile of PCA as the disease progresses. Studies of healthy adults and other posterior cortical lesion patients implicate posterior parietal and temporal regions in executive functions of working memory and verbal fluency, both of which may impact episodic memor

INTRODUCTION: Drawing on the amyloid/tau/neurodegeneration (AT[N]) model, the study examined whether the tau positron emission tomography (PET) biomarker [18F]AV-1451 was associated with episodic memory problems beyond what was predicted by the amyloid beta (Aβ) PET in Down syndrome (DS).
METHODS: Data from 123 non-demented adults with DS (M = 47 years, standard deviation = 6.34) were analyzed. The Cued Recall Test assessed episodic memory. Tau PET standardized update value ratio (SUVR) was assessed across Braak regions as continuous and binary (high tau [TH] vs. low tau [TL]) variable. Glob

BACKGROUND: Current biological concepts of borderline personality disorder (BPD) emphasize the interference of emotional hyperarousal and cognitive functions. A prototypical example is episodic memory. Pre-clinical investigations of emotion-episodic memory interactions have shown specific retrograde and anterograde episodic memory changes in response to emotional stimuli. These changes are amygdala dependent and vary as a function of emotional arousal and valence.
METHOD: To determine whether there is amygdala hyper-responsiveness to emotional stimuli as the underlying pathological substrate
