LASSBio-579, a prototype antipsychotic drug, and clozapine are effective in novel object recognition task, a recognition memory model.

Previous studies on the N-phenylpiperazine derivative LASSBio-579 have suggested that LASSBio-579 has an atypical antipsychotic profile. It binds to D2, D4 and 5-HT1A receptors and is effective in animal models of schizophrenia symptoms (prepulse inhibition disruption, apomorphine-induced climbing and amphetamine-induced stereotypy). In the current study, we evaluated the effect of LASSBio-579, clozapine (atypical antipsychotic) and haloperidol (typical antipsychotic) in the novel object recognition task, a recognition memory model with translational value. Haloperidol (0.01 mg/kg, orally) imp

Combined exposure to tobacco smoke and ethanol in adolescent mice elicits memory and learning deficits both during exposure and withdrawal.

INTRODUCTION: Adolescents often associate tobacco smoking and consumption of alcoholic beverages. In spite of that, little is known about the neurobehavioral consequences of the dual exposure in the adolescent brain. In the present work, we assessed the effects of tobacco smoke and/or ethanol exposure during adolescence on memory/learning. METHODS: From postnatal day 30 to 45 (PN30-45), male and female Swiss mice were exposed to tobacco smoke (SMK-generated from research cigarettes type 3R4F, whole body exposure, 8hr/day) and/or ethanol (ETOH-25% solution, 2g/kg intraperitoneally injected eve

A hybrid CNN-XLSTM-GRU deep learning model with autoencoder-based feature selection for hypothyroidism diagnosis.

Hypothyroidism, caused by reduced thyroid-hormone production, is often difficult to diagnose because its symptoms are non-specific and overlap with other disorders. We developed FusionNet-CXG, a hybrid deep-learning model that couples CNN, eXtended LSTM, and GRU components for hypothyroidism prediction. Experiments were performed on a public dataset (3,772 records; 30 features). Class imbalance was mitigated using SMOTE-NC, and performance was estimated using 10 repetitions of 5-fold stratified cross-validation, yielding 50 fold-level evaluations to obtain stable results. Across folds, FusionN

IoT-enabled smart home activity classification using BiLSTM and attention mechanisms.

IoT-enabled smart homes require accurate activity classification to enhance safety, healthcare monitoring, and energy efficiency through continuous sensing and intelligent interpretation of human behavior. Common approaches employ wearable or ambient sensors, signal preprocessing, feature extraction, and deep learning models such as CNNs, LSTMs, BiLSTM, and attention-based classifiers. These techniques generally achieve high classification accuracy, robust temporal modeling, and improved detection of complex activities, supporting reliable automation, health assessment, and anomaly recognition

Optimized multi-modal action recognition using multi-agent systems and adaptive temporal attention.

The recognition of human actions through visual input poses considerable difficulties owing to the diverse ways in which individuals perform the same actions, the temporal variations that are intrinsic to these actions, and the differing viewpoints from which they are perceived. In order to address the limitations of single-modality methods, researchers have increasingly adopted multimodal visual data fusion strategies. This study presents an optimized deep learning model designed for action recognition by combining multiple data modalities, such as depth, skeleton, and inertial data through a

Stability-aware LSTM-MPC framework for personalized levothyroxine dosing in Hashimoto's thyroiditis.

Hypothyroidism, most commonly caused by Hashimoto's thyroiditis, is characterized by insufficient production of thyroid hormones and is typically treated with oral levothyroxine (LT4). However, determining patient-specific LT4 dosage remains challenging due to significant inter-individual variability and the need for repeated clinical adjustments. In this study, a stability-aware, data-driven dosing framework is developed for personalized LT4 therapy. The proposed approach combines a Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) neural network for predicting free thyroxine (FT4) concentrations with a model pr

Feasibility of remote Memory Clinics using the plan, do, study, act (PDSA) cycle.

INTRODUCTION: A timely diagnosis of dementia is crucial for initiating and maintaining support for people living with dementia. The coronavirus disease (COVID) pandemic temporarily halted Memory Clinics, where this is organised, and rate of dementia diagnosis has fallen. Despite increasing use of alternatives to face-to-face (F2F) consultations in other departments, it is unclear whether this is feasible within the traditional Memory Clinic model. AIMS: The main aim of this service improvement project performed during the pandemic was to explore feasibility of telephone (TC) and videoconferen

Data-driven and feature-sifting based state-of-health estimation for li-ion batteries using KPCA and NRBO-optimized transformer-LSTM hybrid model.

Electrochemical energy storage technologies, such as lithium-ion batteries, are widely used in various scenarios, but their capacity, lifespan, and state-of-health (SOH) are susceptible to numerous influencing factors. To improve the accuracy of state-of-health (SOH) prediction for lithium-ion battery cells, this paper builds up a feature-based analysis framework, and proposes an enhanced predicting model, which integrates the principles of incremental capacity analysis (ICA) and differential voltage analysis (DVA), and the ideas of kernel principal component analysis (KPCA), and Pearson corre

Temporal deep neural network for tactile sensing in artificial finger pulp skin.

Tactile perception plays a vital role in artificial finger pulp skin, especially in regions responsible for grasping and touching tasks, where precise sensing of deformation position and applied force is critical. Conventional demodulation methods often fail to fully leverage temporal correlations in data during the pressing process, limiting the accuracy of tactile demodulation. To address this, we propose a tactile sensing system based on quasi-distributed Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) integrated into artificial finger pulp skin, along with a two-stage hybrid LSTM-Transformer neural network (T

An Intelligent Real-Time System for Sentence-Level Recognition of Continuous Saudi Sign Language Using Landmark-Based Temporal Modeling.

A persistent challenge for Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing individuals is the communication gap between sign language users and the hearing community, particularly in regions with limited automated translation resources. In Saudi Arabia, this gap is amplified by the reliance on Saudi Sign Language (SSL) and the scarcity of real-time, sentence-level translation systems. This paper presents a real-time system for sentence-level recognition of continuous SSL and direct mapping to natural spoken Arabic. The proposed system operates end-to-end on live video streams or pre-recorded content, extracting spat

Hippocampal Synaptic Plasticity: Integrating Memory and Anxiety Impairments in the Early Stages of Alzheimer's Disease.

A decline in hippocampal function has long been associated with the progression of cognitive impairments in patients with Alzheimer's disease (AD). The disruption of hippocampal synaptic plasticity [primarily the reduction of long-term potentiation LTP] by excess production of soluble beta-amyloid (Aβ) has long been accepted as the mechanism by which AD pathology impairs memory, at least during the early stages of AD pathogenesis. However, the premise that hippocampal LTP underpins the formation of associative, long-term memories has been challenged. Here, we consider evidence that this canoni

Converging Evidence That Neural Plasticity Underlies Transcranial Direct-Current Stimulation.

It is not definitely known how direct-current stimulation causes its long-lasting effects. Here, we tested the hypothesis that the long time course of transcranial direct-current stimulation (tDCS) is because of the electrical field increasing the plasticity of the brain tissue. If this is the case, then we should see tDCS effects when humans need to encode information into long-term memory, but not at other times. We tested this hypothesis by delivering tDCS to the ventral visual stream of human participants during different tasks (i.e., recognition memory vs. visual search) and at different

Tempol protects sleep-deprivation induced behavioral deficits in aggressive male Long-Evans rats.

Earlier, we reported that elevated anxiety-like behavior and high aggression in aged retired breeder Long-Evans (L-E) rats was associated with increased plasma corticosterone and elevated oxidative stress levels. In the present study, we examined how this aged aggressive and anxious rat strain responds to acute sleep deprivation (24h) and whether their behaviors can be modulated via antioxidant tempol treatment. Four groups of L-E rats were utilized: naïve control (NC), tempol treated control (T+NC), sleep deprived (SD), tempol treated and sleep deprived (T+SD). Thus, two groups were treated w

Intense training abolishes the two temporal windows of cycloheximide-induced amnesia in rats.

Several studies have identified two distinct time windows during memory consolidation that are sensitive to protein synthesis inhibitors, whereas only a single window is observed following enhanced training. These findings suggest that one or two waves of protein synthesis may be required for long-term memory formation, depending on the strength of the training. However, further intensifying the learning stimulus may counteract the disruptive effects of protein synthesis inhibitors. To test this hypothesis, we trained rats in an inhibitory avoidance task using either moderate or intense footsh

Promoting Personalized Reminiscence Among Cognitively Intact Older Adults Through an AI-Driven Interactive Multimodal Photo Album: Development and Usability Study.

BACKGROUND: Reminiscence, a therapy that uses stimulating materials such as old photos and videos to stimulate long-term memory, can improve the emotional well-being and life satisfaction of older adults, including those who are cognitively intact. However, providing personalized reminiscence therapy can be challenging for caregivers and family members. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to achieve three objectives: (1) design and develop the GoodTimes app, an interactive multimodal photo album that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to engage users in personalized conversations and storytelling abou

Developmental and molecular contributions to contextual fear memory emergence in mice.

Cognitive impairment is a common phenotype of neurodevelopmental disorders, but how these deficits arise remains elusive. Determining the onset of discrete cognitive capabilities facilitates studies in probing mechanisms underlying their emergence. The present study analyzed the emergence of contextual fear memory persistence (7-day memory retention) and remote memory (30-day memory retention). There was a rapid transition from postnatal day (P) 20 to P21, in which memory persistence emerged in C57Bl/6 J male and female mice. Remote memory was present at P23, but expression was not robust comp

Memory reacquisition deficit: Chicks fail to relearn pharmacologically disrupted associative response.

It is generally assumed that if memory is disrupted by pharmacological inhibitors during its consolidation, it can be later acquired afresh. In our experiments, we trained day-old chicks in a one-trial passive avoidance task and interfered with memory formation using protein synthesis inhibitor anisomycin or NMDA receptor antagonist MK-801. Second training was then given to amnestic animals with either the same conditioning stimulus (retraining) or a new one (novel training). Retraining with the same stimulus failed to produce efficient memory at all the examined between-training and training-

Immediate rather than delayed memory impairment in older adults with latent toxoplasmosis.

The neurotropic parasite Toxoplasma gondii infects one third of the world population, but its effect on memory remains ambiguous. To examine a potential relationship of the infection with immediate and delayed memory, a population-based study was conducted in 4485 participants of the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey aged 60years and older. Serum anti-Toxoplasma IgG antibodies were measured by enzyme immune assay and verbal memory was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination and the East Boston Memory Test. The prevalence of latent toxoplasmosis was 41%; in one way

Temporal gamma tACS and auditory stimulation affect verbal memory in healthy adults.

Research suggests a potential of gamma oscillation entrainment for enhancing memory in Alzheimer's disease and healthy subjects. Gamma entrainment can be accomplished with oscillatory electrical, but also sensory stimulation. However, comparative studies between sensory stimulation and transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) effects on memory processes are lacking. This study examined the effects of rhythmic gamma auditory stimulation (rAS) and temporal gamma-tACS on verbal long-term memory (LTM) and working memory (WM) in 74 healthy individuals. Participants were assigned to two g
