Radial tears of the meniscus disrupt circumferential fibers that allow for the dispersion of axial tibiofemoral forces. Both nonoperative treatment and meniscectomy carry increased risk of early-onset degeneration of the joint because of decreased contact surface area and increased point-loading of the chondral surfaces. Radial type tears are also notable for the relatively high failure rate associated with repair. The purpose of this technical note is to demonstrate our surgical technique for a radial lateral meniscus repair construct that allows for good apposition and anatomic reduction of …

Medial meniscus posterior root tears (MMRTs), defined as tears or avulsions that occur within 1 cm of the tibial attachment of the medial meniscus posterior root, lead to biomechanically detrimental knee conditions by creating a functionally meniscal-deficient status. Given their biomechanical significance, MMRTs have recently been gaining increasing interest. Accordingly, numerous studies have been conducted on the anatomy, biomechanics, clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of MMRTs, and extensive knowledge has been accumulated. Although a consensus has not yet been reached on several …

BACKGROUND: Lateral meniscus posterior root tears (LMPRTs) almost always occur in association with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears. Their repair is advocated to restore the stabilizing and load-sharing functions of the meniscus.
PURPOSE: To study the functional outcomes of combined arthroscopic repair of LMPRTs and ACL reconstruction (ACLR).
STUDY DESIGN: Case series; Level of evidence, 4.
METHODS: The authors evaluated patients who underwent simultaneous arthroscopic ACLR and LMPRT repair. All patients had chronic injuries, with a mean time since ACL rupture of 7.9 months. Patient c…

BACKGROUND: Turner's syndrome, discoid meniscus, and Blount's disease have all been studied in isolation, but, to the best of our knowledge, there have been no studies reporting a patient with all three. Thus, the first case of Turner's syndrome with discoid meniscus and Blount's disease is presented.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 5-year-old Japanese girl with a history of Turner's syndrome and Blount's disease complained of pain in her left knee. Magnetic resonance imaging showed a discoid lateral meniscus tear, and arthroscopic partial meniscectomy was performed, providing a good outcome.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The interaction between joint injuries and posttraumatic osteoarthritis (PTOA) is generally thought to be mechanical in nature, however, surgical intervention has little effect on the development of PTOA. Little is known about the biological underpinning of how meniscus and anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears lead to cartilage degeneration. This review summarizes the latest findings regarding biological factors that influence how the knee responds to meniscus and ligament injuries, how meniscus and/or ACL tears turn the joint in the direction of PTOA and whether patient r…

PURPOSE: Varus alignment is known as one of the major causes of medial compartment osteoarthritis (OA). Medial meniscus extrusion also plays a critical role in the in the development of OA. However, studies on the exact relationship between alignment parameters and medial meniscus extrusion are limited. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate this relationship in patients with knee OA.
METHODS: Based on a retrospective analysis of the outpatient magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) database, 190 knees were identified to be examined using weight-bearing, whole-leg radiographs and MRIs within 3 …

Medial meniscus posterior root tear is one of the underestimated knee injuries in terms of incidence. Despite its grave sequelae, using simple but effective technique can maintain the native knee joint longevity. In the current note, a 2-simple-suture pullout technique was used to effectively reduce the meniscus posterior root to its anatomic position. The success of the technique depended on proper tool selection as well as tibial tunnel direction that allowed easier root suturing and better suture tensioning, without inducing any iatrogenic articular cartilage injury or meniscal tissue loss.…

PURPOSE: In calculating tear meniscus volume (TMV), tear meniscus height (TMH), radius (TMR) and cross-sectional area (TMA) are usually measured at the center of the lower lid margin, but lid-parallel conjunctival folds (LIPCOFs) are known to influence the tear meniscus regularity. The aim of this study was to analyze the influence of LIPCOFs on TMA measured by optical coherence tomography (OCT) and consequently, the calculated tear meniscus volume (TMV).
METHODS: Using OCT (Cirrus-HD; Carl Zeiss Meditec, Jena, Germany), the TMH, TMR and TMA in 42 subjects (13M, 29F; mean age 27.3 SD±8.4 year…

BACKGROUND: The meniscal flounce is wavy fold in free inner border of meniscus seen during knee arthroscopy. The presence of this flounce in medial meniscus has been found to be highly predictive of normal medial meniscus. With meniscus related symptoms being commonest indication for undergoing knee arthroscopy, presence or absence of medial meniscus flounce, can be a good guiding sign. In this study, we aimed to validate the significance of the flounce sign in ruling out medial meniscus tear.
METHODS: A prospective study was undertaken to validate the significance of flounce sign. There were…

OBJECTIVE: Meniscus tear is a known risk factor for osteoarthritis (OA). Quantitative assessment of meniscus degeneration, prior to surface break-down, is important to identification of early disease potentially amenable to therapeutic interventions. This work examines the diagnostic potential of ultrashort echo time-enhanced T2∗ (UTE-T2∗) mapping to detect human meniscus degeneration in vitro and in vivo in subjects at risk of developing OA.
DESIGN: UTE-T2∗ maps of 16 human cadaver menisci were compared to histological evaluations of meniscal structural integrity and clinical magnetic resona…
