Transdiagnostic, Psychodynamic Web-Based Self-Help Intervention Following Inpatient Psychotherapy: Results of a Feasibility Study and Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND: Mental disorders have become a major health issue, and a substantial number of afflicted individuals do not get appropriate treatment. Web-based interventions are promising supplementary tools for improving health care for patients with mental disorders, as they can be delivered at low costs and used independently of time and location. Although psychodynamic treatments are used frequently in the face-to-face setting, there has been a paucity of studies on psychodynamic Web-based self-help interventions. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility and pr

Functional mental capacity, treatment as usual and time: magnitude of change in secure hospital patients with major mental illness.

BACKGROUND: Decision making ability can change with time, depending on mental or physical health. Little is known about the factors that determine this change and the relationship of capacity to time. As a pilot for studies using functional mental capacities as an outcome measure, we sought to quantify this relationship measuring change over time using competence assessment tools, and rating scales for symptoms and global function. METHODOLOGY: We assessed 37 inpatients in a secure psychiatric hospital. All patients met the diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders-fourth edition

Non-consensual treatment is (nearly always) morally impermissible.

Commentators routinely urge that it is morally permissible forcibly to treat psychiatric patients (1) to preserve the patient's best interests and (2) to restore the patient's autonomy. Such arguments specify duties of beneficence toward others, while appreciating personal autonomy as a positive value to be weighted against other factors. Varying by jurisdiction, legal statutes usually require, in addition, at least (3) that there exists the threat of harm to self or others. In this paper, I argue against embracing the first two elements of this prevailing view. I also argue for a very restric

Mental Health Access in the United States.: A Cross-Ethnic Comparative Study.

The prevalence and impact of mental health challenges among racially and ethnically diverse populations have received growing attention in recent years. This study investigates the factors associated with mental health service utilization and unmet mental health care needs among minoritized adults in the United States. Drawing on data from the 2021-2022 National Health Interview Survey (NHIS), an annual survey of the U.S. civilian, noninstitutionalized population that understands public health conditions, this study included a sample of Asian, Black/African American, and Hispanic participants

Narrative and prosodic skills in children and adolescents with Down syndrome and typically developing children.

PURPOSE: Children with Down Syndrome (DS) show difficulties in language development, in both basic and complex abilities, as narratives. Less is known about the prosodic competence in DS, but the few available studies highlighted the presence of some deficits. Considering the importance of narratives and prosody in communication, the main aim of this study is to investigate these two competencies in participants with DS. METHOD: 13 children with DS participated (Mean age: 13;04, years; months). Their narrative and prosodic abilities, collected through a storytelling task, were compared with t

Forensic psychiatric evaluation of legal capacity and guardianship in hospitalized patients: A retrospective analysis.

Assessment of decision-making capacity and guardianship in hospitalized patients represents a critical interface between forensic psychiatry, clinical medicine, and law. In Turkiye, such evaluations are frequently requested by courts or notaries; however, empirical data describing their forensic characteristics remain limited. This study examined hospitalized patients referred for forensic psychiatric evaluation of decision-making capacity and guardianship and identified factors influencing medico-legal outcomes. This retrospective study included all inpatient consultations requested for foren

Various mentalizing concepts in mothers with postpartum depression, comorbid anxiety, and personality disorders.

BACKGROUND: Mentalization is defined as the human capacity to reflect upon one's own or others' behaviors in terms of underlying mental states and intentions. Several concepts of mentalizing exist, which differ in content, assessment, and clinical prediction. AIMS: The present study examines the relationship between the three main concepts of mentalizing, namely, reflective functioning (RF), parental reflective functioning (PRF), and Mind-Mindedness (MM), in mothers with postpartum depression. It was hypothesized that mentalizing concepts differ in their convergent and divergent variance, as

Barriers and Facilitators of Responding to Problem Gambling: Perspectives from Australian Mental Health Services.

Despite high rates of comorbidity between problem gambling and mental health disorders, few studies have examined barriers or facilitators to the implementation of screening for problem gambling in mental health services. This exploratory qualitative study identified key themes associated with screening in mental health services. Semi-structured interviews were undertaken with 30 clinicians and managers from 11 mental health services in Victoria, Australia. Major themes and subthemes were identified using qualitative content analysis. Six themes emerged including competing priorities, importan

BIPP madness; an iatrogenic cause of acute confusion.

An 81-year-old man, admitted under the Ear, Nose and Throat Team with persistent epistaxis, developed an acute confusional state. He was previously physically independent and mentally competent. Immediate investigations did not reveal a cause for his deterioration. He eventually made a full recovery and returned home. Subsequently, his serum bismuth level was noted to be within the toxic range and was felt to have been the cause of his confusional state.

Assessing what matters: integrating social-emotional learning into classroom assessment for pupil well-being in Ghanaian basic schools.

In response to growing concerns about pupil well-being and mental health in test-driven classrooms, this study examined how integrating Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) competencies into classroom assessment promotes holistic development in Ghanaian basic schools. Using a pre-test/post-test control group design, data were collected from 360 pupils aged 10–15 years across six public schools in urban, peri-urban, and rural settings. Participants were randomly assigned to either an SEL-integrated assessment group (n = 180) or a control group (n = 180). Standardized instruments the MHC–SF, SEI, CD-

Perceptions of stress and coping strategies among adults with mild mental retardation: insight into psychological distress.

Stress, coping, perceptions of control, and psychological distress of 88 adults with mild mental retardation were assessed. Stressful interpersonal interactions and concerns over personal competencies occurred most frequently. Frequency and stress impact were positively associated with a composite score of psychological distress. Active coping was associated with less psychological distress than distraction or avoidant coping. Perceptions of control were positively related to active coping and negatively related to avoidant coping. Active coping was related to less psychological distress when

Service user and family participation in mental health policy making in Timor-Leste: a qualitative study with multiple stakeholders.

BACKGROUND: Participation in mental health system strengthening by people with mental health problems and their families is a cornerstone of people-centred mental health care, yet there is a dearth of research about participation from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), particularly from the Asia Pacific region. Hence, this study aimed to assess the current situation, challenges, enabling factors and future actions for service user and family participation in mental health policy making in Timor-Leste. METHODS: In-depth interviews were conducted with 85 adults (≥18 years) who were: (1)

Intersectional Discrimination in Mental Health Care: A Systematic Review With Qualitative Evidence Synthesis.

OBJECTIVE: Discriminatory practices in mental health care undermine the right to health of marginalized service users. Intersectional approaches enable consideration of multiple forms of discrimination that occur simultaneously and remain invisible in single-axis analyses. The authors reviewed intersectionality-informed qualitative literature on discriminatory practices in mental health care to better understand the experiences of marginalized service users and their evaluation and navigation of mental health care. METHODS: The authors searched EBSCO, PubMed, MEDLINE, and JSTOR for studies pu

Cultural and religious influences on Arab American healthcare experiences: a qualitative study.

Immigrants negotiate aspects of their heritage and host cultures to adapt to their new social environment through the acculturation process. This process influences health and well-being in immigrant communities. Arab American immigrants in the United States face unique cultural dynamics that shape their experiences, including healthcare experiences. This study addresses a gap in knowledge about culture as a social determinant of health awareness, healthcare access, and healthcare quality among Arab Americans. Guided by acculturation theory, we conducted thematic analysis of semi-structured in

"God, why?": The Experience of Mothers from the Israeli Ultra-Orthodox Sector after their Child's Disclosure of Sexual Abuse.

Studies dealing with the experiences of non-offending mothers from the general population and minority groups after their child's disclosure of sexual abuse are scarce, and studies on mothers from the Jewish ultra-Orthodox community are non-existent. This study takes an initial step in filling this gap by exploring how the normalization of sexual abuse shapes these mothers' experiences. A qualitative phenomenological study was conducted on a sample of 21 mothers from the ultra-Orthodox sector whose children had been sexually abused. It consisted of in-depth, semi-structured interviews of the m

The Mental Status Exam: An Online Teaching Exercise Using Video-Based Depictions by Simulated Patients.

INTRODUCTION: The mental status exam (MSE) is a structured approach to gathering a patient's behavioral and cognitive information. Analogous to the physical exam, it provides a template to collect clinical data in a systematic fashion. The MSE is a core competency of undergraduate medical education (UME) and an entrustable professional activity in clinical psychiatry. METHODS: We developed video clips of simulated patients depicting three adults respectively diagnosed with schizophrenia, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and bipolar disorder. We used three short video clips per condition to demo
