We report a case showing supranuclear vertical gaze palsy and convergence nystagmus caused by a unilateral lesion of the rostral interstitia … teral posterior commissure, and convergence nystagmus usually by a lesion near or within the dorsal mesencephalon. However, recent reports have demonstrated a histopathologic evidence that vertical gaze palsy was caused by unilateral riMLF lesion. The present case confirms clinically that both vertical gaze palsy and convergence nystagmus can be developed by a …

The distribution of estrogen receptors in the quail brain was investigated by immunocytochemistry using the monoclonal antibody H222SPy raised against estrogen receptors that had been isolated from a human mammary tumor. Nuclei which contained cells labeled for estrogen receptor were identified in the telencephalon, diencephalon and mesencephalon. In particular, a high percentage of labeled cells was observed in the lateral septum, the nucleus accumbens, the preoptic medial nucleus, the supraoptic nuclei, the anterior medial hypothalamus, the paraventricular magnocellular nucleus, the caudal p…

Addictive drugs cause long-lasting changes in connectivity from inputs onto ventral tegmental area dopamine cells (VTADA) that contribute to drug-induced behavioral adaptations. However, it is not known which inputs are altered. Here, we used a rabies virus (RABV)-based mapping strategy to quantify RABV-labeled inputs to VTA cells after a single exposure to one of a variety of misused drugs - cocaine, amphetamine, methamphetamine, morphine, and nicotine - and compared the relative global input labeling across conditions. We observed that all tested addictive drugs elicited similar input change

Understanding the progression of α-synuclein pathology in neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's disease (PD) is a longstanding challenge. Here, a novel midbrain-hindbrain-assembloid model that recapitulates the spread of α-synuclein pathology observed in PD patients, akin to Braak's hypothesis, is presented. Initially, the presence α-synuclein pathology is demonstrated in the hindbrain organoids. Subsequently, sophisticated tissue engineering methods are employed to create midbrain-hindbrain assembloids. These assembloids allow investigation and description of the spreading of α-synuc

Organoids allow to model healthy and diseased human tissues. and have applications in developmental biology, drug discovery, and cell therapy. Traditionally cultured in immersion/suspension, organoids face issues like lack of standardization, fusion, hypoxia-induced necrosis, continuous agitation, and high media volume requirements. To address these issues, we developed an air-liquid interface (ALi) technology for culturing organoids, termed AirLiwell. It uses non-adhesive microwells for generating and maintaining individualized organoids on an air-liquid interface. This method ensures high st

BACKGROUND: Anatomic triangles aid neurosurgeons in accessing deep targets. However, the supracerebellar-supratrochlear triangle (STT) and supracerebellar-infratrochlear triangle (ITT), defined by specific landmarks, remain underexplored. This study provides a descriptive and quantitative analysis of their anatomical parameters to enhance microsurgical utility.
METHODS: The lateral supracerebellar-infratentorial (SCIT) approach with a retrosigmoid craniotomy was performed on 5 formalin-fixed, latex-injected, cadaveric heads, with STT and ITT identified bilaterally. Measurements were acquired

RATIONALE: Bilateral thalamic glioma is extremely rare and characterized by strictly limited involvement of bilateral thalami. To investigate its clinical and neuroimaging features, we herein reported a rare case of anaplastic astrocytoma (AA) involving both thalami and the brainstem and reviewed the literature.
PATIENT CONCERNS: A-33-year-old Chinese woman was referred to our department owing to persistent headache and nausea and vomiting. Neurological examination showed mild cognitive impairment and positive Kernig sign.
DIAGNOSIS: Brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated asymme

BACKGROUND: Understanding prefrontal cortex projections to diencephalic-mesencephalic junction (DMJ), especially to subthalamic nucleus (STN) and ventral mesencephalic tegmentum (VMT) helps our comprehension of Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) in major depression (MD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Fiber routes are complex and tract tracing studies in non-human primate species (NHP) have yielded conflicting results. The superolateral medial forebrain bundle (slMFB) is a promising target for DBS in MD and OCD. It has become a focus of criticism owing to its name and its diffusion weighted

BACKGROUND: Structural and functional neuroimaging studies often overlook lower basal ganglia structures located in and adjacent to the midbrain due to poor contrast on clinically acquired T1-weighted scans. Here, we acquired T1-weighted, T2-weighted, and resting-state fMRI scans to investigate differences in volume, estimated myelin content and functional connectivity of the substantia nigra (SN), subthalamic nuclei (SubTN) and red nuclei (RN) of the midbrain in IGE.
METHODS: Thirty-three patients with IGE (23 refractory, 10 non-refractory) and 39 age and sex-matched healthy controls underwe

The hippocampus has been a focus of memory research since H.M's surgery abolished his ability to form new memories, yet its mechanistic role in memory remains debated. Here, we identify a candidate memory mechanism: an anticipatory hippocampal "convergence state", observed while awaiting valuable information, and which predicts subsequent learning. During fMRI, participants viewed trivia questions eliciting high or low curiosity, followed seconds later by its answer. We reasoned that encoding success requires a confluence of conditions, so that hippocampal states more conducive to memory forma

BACKGROUND: There is growing evidence that neuroinflammation may contribute to schizophrenia neuropathology. Elevated pro-inflammatory cytokines are evident in the midbrain from schizophrenia subjects, findings that are driven by a subgroup of patients, characterised as a "high inflammation" biotype. Cytokines trigger the release of antibodies, of which immunoglobulin G (IgG) is the most common. The level and function of IgG is regulated by its transporter (FcGRT) and by pro-inflammatory IgG receptors (including FcGR3A) in balance with the anti-inflammatory IgG receptor FcGR2B. Testing whether

BACKGROUND: The fasciculus retroflexus is the prominent efferent pathway from the habenular complex. Medial habenular axons form a core packet whereas lateral habenular axons course in a surrounding shell. Both groups of fibers share the same initial pathway but differ in the final segment of the tract, supposedly regulated by surface molecules. The gene Amigo2 codes for a membrane adhesion molecule with an immunoglobulin-like domain 2 and is selectively expressed in the medial habenula. We present it as a candidate for controlling the fasciculation behavior of medial habenula axons.

INTRODUCTION: Brainstem disconnection syndrome is a rare and severe disease resulting from a midbrain-hindbrain segmental defect. Clinical signs include a severe neurological impairment, an early death (usually during the first year of life), and pathognomonic postnatal brain imaging features. Two major hypotheses are proposed to explain the etiopathogenesis of this syndrome, namely an inborn error of morphogenesis or a vascular disruption defect.
CASE REPORT AND LITERATURE REVIEW: Here we report on prenatal (ultrasound; fetal MRI) and postnatal (MRI) neuroimaging findings observed in a full-

Contemporary preclinical models suggest that abnormal functioning of a brain network consisting of the hippocampus, midbrain and striatum plays a critical role in the pathophysiology of schizophrenia. Previous neuroimaging studies examined individual aspects of this model in schizophrenia patients and individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis. However, this exact preclinical brain network has not been translated to human neuroimaging studies with schizophrenia patients and therefore it is currently unknown how functioning of this network is altered in patients. Here we investigated resti

Wall-eyed monocular internuclear ophthalmoplegia (WEMINO) is a rare variant of internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO), consisting of unilateral INO and ipsilateral exotropia. This distinctive syndrome is probably associated with damage to the medial longitudinal fasciculus. However, WEMINO caused by a midbrain lesion has not been previously reported. We herein report a 50-year-old man presenting with WEMINO and vertical gaze dysfunction resulting from infarction of the midbrain tegmentum.

A 33-year-old male presented with sudden onset of dysarthria. MRI showed a single round lesion containing hematomas in varying stages combined with venous malformation in the superior midline portion of the midbrain, indicating a midbrain cavernous angioma. Serial follow-up MRI revealed enlargement of the angioma concomitant with worsening of the dysarthria, ataxia, and intention tremor. Preoperative MRI suggested that the angioma consisted of a cystic hemorrhagic lesion with an 18-mm diameter without hydrocephalus. Since the angioma was located just beneath the floor of the midline portion of

INTRODUCTION: Blepharospasm is a type of focal dystonia and categorized into primary and secondary forms, based on whether or not a cause can be established. Secondary blepharospasm is uncommon and can be associated with underlying brain lesions. Photophobia is a prominent complaint in blepharospasm patients. We are reporting a case of secondary blepharospasm with photophobia in a patient who had underlying midbrain tuberculoma and thalamic infarcts. This type of presentation has not been reported to the best of our knowledge.
CASE REPORT: A 26-year-old man presented to us with the complaint
