Dyshidrotic eczema as an occupational dermatitis in metal workers.

Metalworkers exposed to metalworking fluids often encounter dermatological problems. In an epidemiological study of 286 metalworkers, 14% had dermatitis. Of these, 21 (54%) presented with the clinical appearance of dyshidrotic eczema. 3 out of these 21 operators had positive patch test reactions, 1 to nickel and 2 to formaldehyde and formaldehyde releasers, while 1 other was diagnosed as atopic. According to the literature, dyshidrotic eczema is strongly related to an atopic constitution and to contact sensitization, especially to nickel. However, our findings suggest that dyshidrotic eczema i

[Importance of a screening system in the prevention of diseases of the lumbosacral division of the peripheral nervous system].

An automated screening system for prophylactic examinations is offered. The system enables one to reveal early compensated forms of lumbar osteochondrosis, as well as persons with an increased risk of that disease. The system is based on a statistical analysis of the lumbar osteochondrosis risk factors revealed in a particular individual, and involves the use of a computer. The practical use of this system at large industrial plants has made it possible to reveal potential patients to whom individual therapeutic and prophylactic complexes were administered. It is shown that the size of the ris

Respiratory cancer among copper smelter workers: recent mortality statistics.

A survey of mortality among copper smelter workers in the western United States revealed that a respiratory cancer excess previously observed during the period 1938 through 1963 continued from 1964 through 1977. When analyzed in relation to smelter employment prior to 1964, the recent increase in respiratory cancer was linked to work in plant areas where airborne arsenic concentrations were elevated and to a cumulative arsenic exposure index, although some excess risk was also associated with long-term employment in jobs with limited exposures to arsenic. The arsenic-related excess remained af

Cancer and noncancer mortality among aluminum smelting workers in Badin, North Carolina.

BACKGROUND: Badin, North Carolina, hosted an aluminum smelting plant from 1917 to 2007. The Concerned Citizens of West Badin reported suspected excess cancer mortality among former employees. This study aimed to investigate these concerns. METHODS: The study cohort was enumerated from United Steel Workers' records of workers employed from 1980 to 2007. Cause-specific mortality rates in the cohort were compared with North Carolina population mortality rates using standardized mortality ratios (SMRs), standardized by age, sex, race, and calendar period. We estimated cause-specific adjusted stan

Signs and symptoms of mercury-exposed gold miners.

OBJECTIVES: Gold miners use mercury to extract gold from ore adding liquid mercury to the milled gold-containing ore. This results in a mercury-gold compound, called amalgam. Miners smelt this amalgam to obtain gold, vaporizing it and finally inhaling the toxic mercury fumes. The objective was to merge and analyze data from different projects, to identify typical signs and symptoms of chronic inorganic mercury exposure. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Miners and community members from various artisanal small-scale gold mining areas had been examined (Philippines, Mongolia, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, Indonesia

Occupational genotoxicity among copper smelters.

Occupational exposure in a copper smelting industry may produce various adverse health effects including cancer. Despite a number of well-documented studies reporting an increased risk of cancer among copper smelter workers, the data on genotoxic effects in this industry are scarce. In view of the above, an assessment of DNA damage in peripheral blood leukocytes by Comet assay from copper smelter workers was undertaken. Additionally, the proton-induced X-ray emission (PIXE) analysis was assessed to determine the metal content of samples. The study was conducted with all workers from a copper s

Biodegradation of cyanide containing effluents by Scenedesmus obliquus.

Biological degradation of cyanide has been shown a viable and robust process for degrading cyanide in mining process wastewaters. Several algal cultures can effectively degrade cyanide as carbon and/or nitrogen source for their growth. In this study, cyanide effluent degradation by Scenedesmus obliquus was examined. Gold mill effluents containing WAD cyanide concentration of 77.9mg/L was fed to batch unit to examine the ability of S. obliquus for degrading cyanide. Cyanide was reduced down to 6mg/L in 77h. Microbial growth and metal uptake of Zn, Fe and Cu was examined during cyanide degradati

Degradation of cyanide in agroindustrial or industrial wastewater in an acidification reactor or in a single-step methane reactor by bacteria enriched from soil and peels of cassava.

During cassava starch production, large amounts of cyanoglycosides were released and hydrolysed by plant-borne enzymes, leading to cyanide concentrations in the wastewater as high as 200 mg/l. For anaerobic degradation of the cyanide during pre-acidification or single-step methane fermentation, anaerobic cultures were enriched from soil residues of cassava roots and sewage sludge. In a pre-acidification reactor this culture was able to remove up to 4 g potassium cyanide/l of wastewater at a hydraulic retention time (tHR) of 4 days, equivalent to a maximal cyanide space loading of 400 mg CN- 1(
