Acute otitis media in children.

Early detection and nonintrusive assessment of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) remain an unmet clinical challenge. Spectral computed tomography (CT) presents a potential modality for gastrointestinal (GI) imaging; however, clinical CT contrast agents are unable to achieve targeted detection of IBD in spectral CT imaging. In this study, we developed neodymium-hyaluronic acid nanoparticles (Nd-HA NPs) as novel contrast agents for spectral CT imaging of IBD. Nd-HA NPs were synthesized by conjugating HA units with lanthanide complex neodymium-diethylenetriamine-pentaacetic acid (Nd-DTPA). The phy

[Microtympanopuncture].

Tympanopuncture was made with a needle having a step gradation to its thin end. Such a needle abates traumaticity of this manipulation and extends its applicability. The above modification was called by the author microtympanopuncture. The review of 7000 cases of microtympanopuncture is given. Indications for this procedure and its possible complications are outlined. Microtympanopuncture can be made in outpatient setting and therefore must find wider application.

[Cleft lip and palate : One of the most frequent congenital malformations].

With a frequency of 1 per 500 live births, a cleft lip and palate is one of the most frequent congenital malformations. Untreated, it leads … the first year of life in order to enable normal intake of food, articulation, nasal breathing and middle ear ventilation. Breastfeeding is possible in children with a cleft formation but alternative feeding methods, such as finger feeding, often have to be used. In addition to the surgery for primary closure of the cleft, otorhinolaryngological (ENT) interventions, sp …

Follow-up of 366 ears after tympanostomy tube insertion: why is it draining?

OBJECTIVE: Tympanostomy tube insertion is one of the most frequently performed procedures in otolaryngology. Complications, such as otorrhea, tympanosclerosis, and cholesteatoma, have been reported in the literature after its application. STUDY DESIGN: This study reports the complications encountered with 239 children (439 ears) with a follow-up of 7 to 73 months (median, 29 months) after tympanostomy tube insertion. Hearing results and middle ear pressures were compared and complications were noted in 366 ears that were available for the study. RESULTS: Otorrhea developed in 3 (0.8%) cases.

Effects of an enrofloxacin-silver sulfadiazine emulsion in the ears of rabbits with perforated tympanic membranes.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether an enrofloxacin-silver sulfadiazine emulsion (ESS) labeled for treatment of otitis externa in dogs has ototoxic effects in rabbits following myringotomy. ANIMALS: 6 healthy adult New Zealand White rabbits. PROCEDURES: Rabbits were anesthetized for brainstem auditory-evoked response (BAER) tests on day 0. Myringotomy was performed, and BAER testing was repeated. Saline (0.9% NaCl) solution and ESS were then instilled in the left and right middle ears, respectively, and BAER testing was repeated prior to recovery of rabbits from anesthesia. Application of assign

[Curative effect observation of plasma eardrum perforation homochronous with palatoplasty in the treatment of chronic secretory otitis media].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effect of plasma eardrum perforation homochronous with palatoplasty on hearing and tympanic cavity pressure in cleft palate children with secretory otitis media. METHOD: Fifty-six cases of cleft palate children with secretory otitis media were randomly divided into observation group and control group. For the control group, palatoplasty was carried out alone. For the observation group, homochronous with palatoplasty, plasma eardrum perforation was performed with the diameter of the aperture 2-3 mm, which was decided by observing viscosity of tympanum fluid under

Noninvasive detection of alarming intracranial pressure changes by auditory monitoring in early management of brain injury: a prospective invasive versus noninvasive study.

BACKGROUND: In brain-injured patients intracranial pressure (ICP) is monitored invasively by a ventricular or intraparenchymal transducer. The procedure requires specific expertise and exposes the patient to complications such as malposition, hemorrhage or infection. As inner-ear fluid compartments are connected to the cerebrospinal fluid space, ICP changes elicit subtle changes in the physiology of the inner ear. Notably, we previously demonstrated that the phase of cochlear microphonic potential (CM) generated by sound stimuli rotates with ICP. The aim of our study was to validate the monito

A cross-sectional analysis of otitis media with effusion in children with Down syndrome.

UNLABELLED: Children with Down syndrome are at risk to develop otitis media with effusion (OME). We performed a retrospective and cross-sectional analysis to evaluate the prevalence of OME in children with Down syndrome (DS) for consecutive age categories between 6 months and 12 years. Clinical and audiometric data were available for 107 children followed in a multidisciplinary Down team. A high prevalence of OME was found at the age of 1 year (66.7 %), with a second peak prevalence of 60 % at 6-7 years. A declining trend was observed in children ≥8 years. Overall, 52.3 % of DS children had ei

Residual Cholesteatoma After Endoscopic-Assisted Canal Wall-Up Tympanomastoidectomy: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of using endoscopes in reducing recidivism secondary to residual cholesteatoma after canal wall-up tympanomastoidectomy. STUDY DESIGN: Randomized clinical trial. SETTING: Tertiary referral center. PATIENTS: Patients with cholesteatoma, aged 7 to 70 years. INTERVENTIONS: Subjects were randomly allocated into two groups: endoscopic-assisted canal wall-up (EACWU; group 1) and conventional canal wall-up (CWU; group 2) techniques. Pars flaccida and pars tensa subgroups were analyzed according to the anatomic location of cholesteatoma or

What to do with medialized tympanostomy tubes? A survey of pediatric otolaryngologists.

INTRODUCTION: Tympanostomy tube placement is the most common surgical procedure performed in children. Medial migration of a tympanostomy tube is a rare occurrence where the tube migrates into the middle ear cavity as opposed to its normal extrusion into the external auditory canal. Whether medialized tympanostomy tubes should be surgically removed in asymptomatic patients is controversial. The objective of this study was to determine experience and management approach of medialized tympanostomy tubes among pediatric otolaryngologists. METHODS: A 12-question cross-section survey was designed
