Elevated serum MDA and depleted non-enzymatic antioxidants, macro-minerals and trace elements are associated with bipolar disorder.

Genetic and neurobiological factors are considered to be the major causes of mood and mental disorders. However, over the past few years, increased levels of serum malondialdehyde and altered levels of various non-enzymatic antioxidants and essential minerals involved in abnormal functional activity have been identified as major contributing factors to the pathogenesis of several neurological disorders. The aim of this study was to determine the levels of the serum lipid peroxidation product malondialdehyde (MDA), antioxidants (vitamin A, E and C), macro-minerals (calcium, potassium and sodium…

Biotic and abiotic pathways of phosphorus cycling in minerals and sediments: insights from oxygen isotope ratios in phosphate.

A key question to address in the development of oxygen isotope ratios in phosphate (δ(18)O(p)) as a tracer of biogeochemical cycling of phosphorus in ancient and modern environments is the nature of isotopic signatures associated with uptake and cycling of mineral-bound phosphate by microorganisms. Here, we present experimental results aimed at understanding the biotic and abiotic pathways of P cycling during biological uptake of phosphate sorbed to ferrihydrite and the selective uptake of sedimentary phosphate phases by Escherichia coli and Marinobacter aquaeolei. Results indicate that a sign

Clot-inducing minerals versus plasma protein dressing for topical treatment of external bleeding in the presence of coagulopathy.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies identified WoundStat (WS, smectite) and Combat Gauze (CG, kaolin-coated gauze) as the most effective available agents for controlling arterial bleeding with potential utility in casualty care. Tissue sealant properties of WS suggested its potential advantage over clot-promoting CG for treating coagulopathic bleeding. This study compared the efficacy of CG and WS with a fibrinogen-based (FAST) dressing to control bleeding in coagulopathic animals. METHODS: Coagulopathy was induced in pigs (n = 55, 35 kg) by ∼50% isovolemic hemodilution and hypothermia (core tempera

Does intestinal resection affect the absorption of essential vitamins, minerals, and bile salts? An overview of the literature.

As the number of persons living long lives following ostomy and bowel resection surgery increases, so do their questions about the effect of surgery on chronic conditions commonly associated with aging. The literature was reviewed to evaluate current evidence about the effect of bowel resection on the absorption of vitamins and minerals and related health concerns such as osteoporosis, gallstones, and renal calculi. Present knowledge about the process of vitamin and mineral absorption in the intestine and clinical study results suggest that chronic inflammation and corticosteroid use may adver…

A novel rapid method for preparation of sample solution for chemical characterisation of titanium minerals by atomic spectrometry.

A new rapid decomposition and dissolution method with a mixture of sodium di-hydrogen orthophosphate and di-sodium hydrogen orthophosphate as a novel flux is described. The minerals are fused with (1:1) mixture of the above salts (flux) and the melt is dissolved in distilled water. The solution is diluted to desired volume depending on the instrumental technique used for determination. ICP-OES is used for the determination of Al, Ca, Mg, Cr, V, Si, Fe and Ti without interference from titanium, iron and sodium phosphate (introduced as flux). All the elements except Si and V are also determined …

Carbon isotope fractionation in the reductive dehalogenation of carbon tetrachloride at iron (hydr)oxide and iron sulfide minerals.

Compound-specific isotope analysis (CSIA) is used increasingly in contaminant hydrology in the attempt to assess the nature as well as the extent of in situ transformation reactions. Potentially, variations of stable isotope ratios along a contaminant plume may be used to quantify in situ degradation. In the present study, the abiotic dehalogenation of CCl4 by Fe(II) present at the surface of different iron minerals has been characterized in terms of the reaction rates and carbon isotopic fractionation (delta13C) of carbon tetrachloride (CCl4) as well as the yields and isotopic signatures of c…

Tissue mineral levels in victims of sudden infant death syndrome II. Essential minerals: copper, zinc, calcium, and magnesium.

Deficiencies of various vitamin and minerals per se have been suggested as possible causes of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS). Further, a deficiency of essential minerals may lead to enhanced toxicity of toxic elements, in particular, lead and cadmium to explore the possibility of mineral deficiencies or interactions with the toxic metals, lead and cadmium, lung, liver, kidney, and rib specimens were obtained at autopsy from 66 SIDS infants and 23 infants who died suddenly from other cases. Tissue copper, zinc, calcium, and magnesium were measured by atomic absorption spectroscopy. No diff…

Impact of Minerals (Ferrihydrite and Goethite) and Their Organo-Mineral Complexes on Fate and Transport of Nanoplastics in the Riverine and Terrestrial Environments.

Abundantly occurring minerals are detrimental in dictating nanoplastics (NPs) fate and transport in the environment. However, in natural scenarios, minerals barely exist in their pure phases. Minerals are often associated with organic matter and form organo-mineral complexes (OMCs), exhibiting different reactivity than their pure mineral phase. In this study, we investigated the impact of ferrihydrite, its weathering-originated secondary mineral goethite, and their corresponding OMCs, i.e., organo-ferrihydrite (O-Fh) and organo-goethite (O-Goe) on NPs mobility under varying environmental condi…

Fungal-Mineral Interaction: Astrobiology Insights from Iron-Rich Mineral Alteration by an Extremophile Black Fungus.

Iron-rich minerals, such as hematite (α-Fe2O3), are prominent constituents of the Martian surface; they are considered to be potential indicators of past aqueous activity and habitability. This study investigated the interaction between the extremophilic black fungus Rhinocladiella similis LaBioMMi 1217 and hematite under simulated laboratory conditions on Mars, focusing on redox-mediated dissolution processes, metabolic adaptations, and biosignature formation. The fungus was cultivated with powdered and polished hematite substrates, and mineral alteration was monitored through physicochemical…

Mineral and Microbial Properties Drive the Formation of Mineral-Associated Organic Matter and Its Response to Increased Temperature.

A comprehensive understanding of the formation of mineral-associated organic matter (MAOM) is a prerequisite for the sustainable management of soil carbon (C) and the development of effective long-term strategies for C sequestration in soils. Nevertheless, the precise manner by which microbial and mineral properties drive MAOM formation efficiency and its subsequent response to elevated temperature at the regional scale remains unclear. Here, we employed isotopically labelled laboratory incubations (at 15°C and 25°C) with soil samples from a ~3000 km transect across the Tibetan Plateau to eluc

Tolvaptan treatment is associated with altered mineral metabolism parameters and increased bone mineral density in ADPKD patients.

BACKGROUND: Autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is characterized by a unique bone and mineral phenotype. The impact of tolvaptan treatment on mineral metabolism and bone mineral density (BMD) is unknown. METHODS: We conducted an analysis in the Bern ADPKD Registry, a prospective observational cohort study. Mineral metabolism parameters were measured at baseline and every 12 months thereafter. BMD was determined by dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry at baseline and after 3 years. Multivariable mixed-effects regression models were applied to assess changes in mineral metabolism p

Degradation of mineral-immobilized pyrene by ferrate oxidation: Role of mineral type and intermediate oxidative iron species.

Ferrate (Fe(VI)) salts like K2FeO4 are efficient green oxidants to remediate organic contaminants in water treatment. Minerals are efficient sorbents of contaminants and also excellent solid heterogeneous catalysts which might affect Fe(VI) remediation processes. By targeting the typical polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon compound - pyrene, the application of Fe(VI) for oxidation of pyrene immobilized on three minerals, i.e., montmorillonite, kaolinite and goethite was studied for the first time. Pyrene immobilized on the three minerals was efficiently oxidized by Fe(VI), with 87%-99% of pyrene (…

Bone mineral content and bone mineral density are lower in older than in younger females with Rett syndrome.

Although bone mineral deficits have been identified in Rett syndrome (RTT), the prevalence of low bone mineral density (BMD) and its association with skeletal fractures and scoliosis has not been characterized fully in girls and women with RTT. Accordingly, we measured total body bone mineral content (BMC) and BMD using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry in a cross-sectional group of 50 females, aged 2-38 y, with RTT. Methyl-CpG-binding 2 (MECP2) mutations, skeletal fractures, and scoliosis were documented. The prevalence of BMC and BMD z scores < or-2 SD was 59 and 45%, respectively. Although a

Increased bone mineral content but not bone mineral density in the hip in surgically treated knee and hip osteoarthritis.

OBJECTIVE: The inverse relationship between the occurrence of osteoarthritis (OA) and osteoporosis is controversial. Some investigators have found higher bone mineral density (BMD) in the hips, lumbar spine, and other skeletal sites of patients with OA; others have not. We investigated the relationship between BMD and OA. METHODS: We compared the BMD, bone mineral content (BMC), and projected area of the femoral neck (FN) and trochanter (TR) of 99 women with a validated diagnosis of primary OA from the Kuopio Osteoporosis Risk Factor and Prevention Study (OSTPRE) cohort, with 2012 controls. Biochemical bone markers, bone mineral content, and bone mineral density in rats with experimental nephrotic syndrome.

The human nephrotic syndrome (NS) is accompanied by important alterations of mineral and bone metabolism. The purpose of the present study was to examine bone metabolism in rats with experimental NS and normal creatinine clearance, and to evaluate the reversibility of this alteration. NS was induced by three injections of puromycin aminonucleoside (PAN) on days 0, 21, and 35 (10, 5, and 5 mg/100 g body weight, respectively). The biochemical markers of bone formation (osteocalcin and alkaline phosphatase) and bone resorption (hydroxyproline and pyridinoline), bone mineral content (BMC), and bon

Side-to-Side Differences in Bone Mineral Density, Bone Mineral Content, and Lean Mass in Healthy Subjects.

BACKGROUND: Limb dominance is influenced by daily activity and muscle strength. Previous studies have demonstrated lateral differences in bone mineral density (BMD), bone mineral content (BMC), and lean mass as a result of asymmetric mechanical loading. Understanding these variations is crucial, especially in conditions with regional bone demineralization, where the contralateral limb can serve as a reference. We aimed to analyze side-to-side differences in BMD, BMC, and lean mass, as measured by dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), in healthy subjects. METHODS: A cross-sectional study inc
