IgM, IgG and IgA class antibodies against three Klebsiella pneumoniae capsular types, Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis, as well as total immunoglobulin concentrations, were measured by enzyme immunoassay and radial immunodiffusion technique, respectively, in paired serum and synovial fluid samples from eight patients with ankylosing spondylitis and 10 with rheumatoid arthritis. No clear evidence for intra-articular antibody production against any of the studied microbes was found.

This report documents a 47-year-old male who developed acute deficits of the IX, X, XI, XII cranial nerves and Horner's symptoms, consistent with Villaret's syndrome. Neuroimaging studies demonstrated an osteolytic lesion in the skull base involving the clivus and jugular foramen. The patient recovered after the antibiotic treatment for proteus mirabilis infection. We suggest that Villaret's syndrome can be a rare presentation of skull base osteomyelitis.

Xanthogranulomatous pyelonephritis is a rare inflammatory disease, characterized by replacement of renal parenchyma with granulomatous tissue. Initial clinical presentation includes abdominal pain and constitutional symptoms related to recurrent urinary infections. The microorganisms most commonly involved are Escherichia coli and Proteus mirabilis. Final diagnosis is made by histopathology, and the only curative treatment is total or partial nephrectomy. A recently diagnosed case in our unit is presented, as well as an update on the knowledge of this disease.

This study aimed to estimate the prevalence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing (ESBL) bacteria in swine. Thus, 214 fecal samples were collected from suckling and weaned piglets from 34 farms in Greece (out of an overall population of about 14,300 sows). A 26-year-old woman presented with a six-year history of right staghorn calculus and pyonephrosis. Intravenous pyelography showed a non-functioning right kidney and chest radiography, an elevated right hemidiaphragm and fluid in the right costaphrenic space. At operation a nephrobronchial fistula was found, and nephrectomy and subdiaphragmatic drainage of the lung abscess was carried out. Culture of the pus grew Proteus mirabilis. The patient made an uneventful recovery and was discharged on the sixteenth day after operation.

Several Pseudomonas aeruginosa strains, including one urinary isolate producing an extended-spectrum beta-lactamase TEM-24, were isolated from a long-term-hospitalized woman. Three TEM-24-producing enterobacterial species (Enterobacter aerogenes, Escherichia coli, and Proteus mirabilis) were isolated from the same patient. TEM-24 and the resistance markers for aminoglycosides, chloramphenicol, and sulfonamide were encoded by a 180-kb plasmid transferred by conjugation into E. coli HB101.

We report clinical and laboratory findings in 11 patients with septic sacro-iliitis. Fever, pain and immobility were prominent symptoms. Acute tenderness of the sacroiliac joint and elevation of the ESR were present in all. Joint puncture allowed identification of the infectious agent in 10 patients: S aureus 4, S typhi 3, E coli 2 and P mirabilis 1. Good clinical results were obtained after appropriate antibiotic therapy.
