Longitudinal trajectories of depressive symptoms: the role of multimorbidity, mobility and subjective memory.

BACKGROUND: The high prevalence of depression among older people in China places a heavy burden on the health system. Multimorbidity, mobility limitation and subjective memory impairment are found to be risk indicators for depression. However, most studies on this topic focused on depression at a single point in time, ignoring the dynamic changes in depressive symptoms and the relationship between the trajectories and these three conditions. Therefore, we aimed to identify distinct trajectories of depressive symptoms in older people and investigate their associations with multimorbidity, mobil…

IGF-1, the cross road of the nutritional, inflammatory and hormonal pathways to frailty.

The decline in functional capacity is a heterogeneous phenomenon in the elderly. An accelerated ageing determines a frail status. It results in an increased vulnerability to stressors for decreased physiological reserves. The early identification of a frail status is essential for preventing loss of functional capacity, and its clinical consequences. Frailty and mobility limitation result from an interplay of different pathways including multiple anabolic deficiency, inflammation, oxidative stress, and a poor nutritional status. However, the age-related decline in insulin-like growth factor 1 …

Discontinuation or abandonment of mobility assistive technology among people with neurological conditions.

INTRODUCTION: Among other limitations, people with neurological conditions often experience problems with functional mobility. One of the intervention strategies employed to mitigate or compensate this limitation is the use of mobility assistive technology such as manual and electric wheelchairs, walkers, canes, crutches, etc. Although assistive technology is a commonly used intervention strategy among disabled people, the use of this technology is sometimes discontinued or abandoned due to a failure to meet the user's needs or a lack of training, among other reasons. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Th

Rapid detection of volatile organic compounds emitted from plants by multicapillary column-ion mobility spectrometry.

This study presents a novel rapid analytical method for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from blueberry leaves using the Tenax adsorbent followed by separation using a multicapillary column (MCC) and Ion Mobility Spectrometry (IMS) detection. The emitted VOCs including caryophyllene, benzene acetonitrile, linalool, ocimene, and methyl salicylate initiated by different stress factors including mechanical damage (punching), herbivore attack (aphids) and methyl jasmonate (MeJA) spraying were detected and quantified. Limits of Detection (LODs) for the VOCs were determined

Revealing the tension: The relationship between high fall risk categorization and low patient mobility.

BACKGROUND: Using an inpatient fall risk assessment tool helps categorize patients into risk groups which can then be targeted with fall prevention strategies. While potentially important in preventing patient injury, fall risk assessment may unintentionally lead to reduced mobility among hospitalized patients. Here we examined the relationship between fall risk assessment and ambulatory status among hospitalized patients. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective cohort study of consecutively admitted adult patients (n = 48,271) to a quaternary urban hospital that provides care for patients of b

The Symptom Experience of Older Adults with Mobility Difficulties: Qualitative Interviews.

Eighteen million older adults have mobility limitations, defined as difficulty walking a quarter of a mile or climbing stairs unassisted. Little is known about how symptom burden impacts mobility difficulty in older adults. Understanding the burden of symptoms responsible for mobility difficulties may be an area for intervention to improve mobility and to prevent adverse outcomes. We conducted 31 semi-structured qualitative interviews (one interview per participant) regarding the symptom burden experience associated with a current mobility difficulty. Thematic analysis revealed symptoms were l…

A Hybrid Assessment of Clinical Mobility Test Items for Evaluating Individuals With Mild Traumatic Brain Injury.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The Functional Gait Assessment (FGA) and High Level Mobility Assessment Tool (HiMAT) are clinical batteries used to assess people with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). However, neither assessment was specifically developed for people with mTBI; the FGA was developed to evaluate vestibular deficits, and the HiMAT was developed for individuals with more severe TBI. To maximize the sensitivity and reduce the time burden of these assessments, the purpose of this study was to determine the combination of FGA and HiMAT items that best discriminates persons with persistent

What is the best way to keep walking and moving around for individuals with Machado-Joseph disease? A scoping review through the lens of Aboriginal families with Machado-Joseph disease in the Top End of Australia.

OBJECTIVES: Machado-Joseph disease (MJD) is the most common spinocerebellar ataxia worldwide. Prevalence is highest in affected remote Aboriginal communities of the Top End of Australia. Aboriginal families with MJD from Groote Eylandt believe 'staying strong on the inside and outside' works best to keep them walking and moving around, in accordance with six key domains that form the 'Staying Strong' Framework. The aim of this current study was to review the literature to: (1) map the range of interventions/strategies that have been explored to promote walking and moving around (functional mob
