The nature of the sulphur atom liberated from xanthine oxidase by cyanide. Evidence from e.p.r. spectroscopy after 35S substitution.

Active xanthine oxidase was labelled specifically with 33S in the cyanide-labile site of the molybdenum centre. The Very Rapid molybdenum (V) e.p.r. signal, generated from this, shows strong coupling of 33S to molybdenum, providing unambiguous evidence that, at least in the signal-giving species, this sulphur atom is a ligand of molybdenum. The structure of the signal-giving species is discussed.

What can we learn from a patient on dialysis for 42 years?

Molybdenum is an essential element in the form of the molybdenum cofactor (Moco). In humans, Moco is required for four enzymes: xanthine oxidase (XO), aldehyde oxidase, sulfite oxidase (SO), and mitochondrial amidoxime-reducing component (mARC). The enzymes are involved in the oxidation of purines to uric acid, metabolism of aromatic aldehydes and heterocyclic compounds, and in the catabolism of sulfur amino acids. Molybdenum cofactor deficiency is a rare autosomal recessive syndrome due to a defective synthesis of Moco, resulting in a deficiency of all the molybdoenzymes. There are no reports…

Ternary (molybdenum disulfide/graphene)/carbon nanotube nanocomposites assembled via a facile colloidal electrostatic path as electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction: Composition and nitrogen-doping play a key role in their performance.

Nanocomposites have garnered attention for their potential as catalysts in electrochemical reactions vital for technologies like fuel cells, water splitting, and metal-air batteries. This work focuses on developing three-dimensional (3D) nanocomposites through aqueous phase exfoliation, non-covalent functionalization of building blocks with surfactants and polymers, and electrostatic interactions in solution leading to the nanocomposites assembly and organization. By combining molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) layers with graphene nanoplatelets (GnPs) to form a binary 2D composite (MoS2/GnP), and su…

Posttraumatic intradiploic pseudomeningocele: neuroimaging.

BACKGROUND: Emerging evidence suggests that deficiencies in trace elements, particularly molybdenum, may contribute to Esophageal Cancer (EC) pathogenesis. Molybdenum is an essential micronutrient that plays a key role in detoxifying carcinogenic compounds through its involvement in enzymatic pathways, including xanthine oxidase activity. This study aims to evaluate serum molybdenum levels in patients with histologically confirmed EC and compare them to healthy controls to assess the association between molybdenum deficiency and EC incidence. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This prospective, single-ce…

Nitrogen Assimilation and Protein Synthesis in Wheat Seedlings as Affected by Mineral Nutrition. II. Micronutrients.

Activity of nitrate reductase from Triticum aestivum L. seedlings was decreased by deficiencies of molybdenum, zinc, and chlorine. Nitrate accumulated in molybdenum-deficient seedlings, declined in zinc-deficient seedlings, and was unaffected by the other micronutrient treatments. Glutamic acid dehydrogenase activity was decreased by deficiency of molybdenum, the only nutrient that affected the enzyme. Glutamine synthetase activity was decreased only by copper deficiency, and glutamic-oxaloacetic transaminase was not affected by any micronutrient deficiencies. Incorporation of (14)C-leucine in…

Structure of LaMo(2)O(5) Containing Both Isolated Mo(6)O(18) Clusters and Sheets of Fused Triangular Mo(3) Clusters.

The structure of the disordered lanthanum molybdate, LaMo(2)O(5), has been solved and refined using powder neutron diffraction data collected at 300 K. The average structure is described in P6(3)/mmc, a = 8.373(1) Å, c = 19.1510(1) Å, Z = 12. The compound contains two types of Mo-Mo bonded units: isolated octahedral Mo(6)O(18) clusters, and infinite molybdenum oxide sheets, formed from condensed triangular Mo(3)O(13) clusters joined together to give a total of four Mo-Mo bonds for each molybdenum. The Mo(6)O(18) clusters have 16 electrons available for metal-metal bonding and the Mo-Mo distanc…

Polyoxometalates in Analytical Sciences.

Polyoxometalates (POMs) have been used for spectrophotometric determinations of silicon and phosphorus under acidic conditions, referred to as the molybdenum yellow method and molybdenum blue method, respectively. Many POMs are redox active and exhibit fascinating but complicated voltammetric responses. These compounds can reversibly accommodate and release many electrons without exhibiting structural changes, implying that POMs can function as excellent mediators and can be applied to sensitive determination methods based on catalytic electrochemical reactions. In addition, some rare-earth-me…

Industrial-Scale Technology for Molybdic Acid Production from Waste Petrochemical Catalysts.

The article describes the technology of molybdic acid recovery from spent petrochemical catalysts (HDS) developed and implemented in industrial activity. HDS catalysts contain molybdenum in the form of MoO3 and are used for the hydrodesulfurization of petroleum products. After deactivation, due to the impurities content in the form of sulfur, carbon and heavy metals, they constitute hazardous waste and, at the same time, a valuable source of the Mo element, recognized as a critical raw material. The presented technology allows the recovery of molybdic acid with a yield of min. 81%, and the pro…

Effect of thiomolybdate and ammonium molybdate in pregnant guinea pigs and their offspring.

Groups of eight guinea pigs and their offspring were given drinking water containing molybdenum as ammonium molybdate (AM) or thiomolybdate (TM) throughout and subsequent to pregnancy. All adult females had oestrous cycles and conception rates were unaffected. Fetal death was common in groups given the high dose of TM. The concentration of copper in liver was reduced in all groups at all ages except for pups killed at birth from animals given AM. The concentration of molybdenum was elevated in liver and kidney of all groups and was statistically significant in the majority. The concentration i…

Effects of molybdate, tungstate, and selenium compounds on formate dehydrogenase and other enzyme systems in Escherichia coli.

The role of selenium and molybdenum in the metabolism of Escherichia coli was explored by growing cells in a simple salts medium and examining the metabolic consequences of altering the concentration of molybdenum and selenium compounds in the medium. The addition of tungstate increased the molybdate deficiency of this medium, as reflected by lowered levels of enzyme systems previously recognized to require compounds of molybdenum and selenium for their formation [formate-dependent oxygen reduction, formate dehydrogenase (FDH) (EC 1.2.2.1), and nitrate reductase (EC 1.9.6.1)]. The requirement …

Toxicity of sodium molybdate and sodium dichromate to Daphnia magna straus evaluated in acute, chronic, and acetylcholinesterase inhibition tests.

As a result of a widespread application in numerous industrial processes, chromium is a contaminant of many environmental systems. Chromium and their compounds are toxic to both invertebrates and vertebrates and, for this reason, there has been a search for suitable and less toxic alternatives. Molybdenum compounds have been studied as alternative to chromium compounds for some industrial applications. The toxicity of chromium is well known but the effects of molybdenum and molybdenum mining on natural populations and communities of freshwater invertebrates have not often been studied. However…

Methyl radical chemistry in non-oxidative methane activation over metal single sites.

Molybdenum supported on zeolites has been extensively studied as a catalyst for methane dehydroaromatization. Despite significant progress, the actual intermediates and particularly the first C-C bond formation have not yet been elucidated. Herein we report evolution of methyl radicals during non-oxidative methane activation over molybdenum single sites, which leads selectively to value-added chemicals. Operando X-ray absorption spectroscopy and online synchrotron vacuum ultraviolet photoionization mass spectroscopy in combination with electron microscopy and density functional theory calculat…

Heavy metal ions inhibit molybdoenzyme activity by binding to the dithiolene moiety of molybdopterin in Escherichia coli.

Molybdenum insertion into the dithiolene group on the 6-alkyl side-chain of molybdopterin is a highly specific process that is catalysed by the MoeA and MogA proteins in Escherichia coli. Ligation of molybdate to molybdopterin generates the molybdenum cofactor, which can be inserted directly into molybdoenzymes binding the molybdopterin form of the molybdenum cofactor, or is further modified in bacteria to form the dinucleotide form of the molybdenum cofactor. The ability of various metals to bind tightly to sulfur-rich sites raised the question of whether other metal ions could be inserted in…

The influence of experimentally induced copper deficiency on the fertility of rams. I. Semen parameters and peripheral plasma androgen concentration.

The influence of molybdenum and molybdenum plus sulphate-induced copper deficiencies on semen quality and peripheral plasma testosterone concentrations in South African Mutton Merino rams was investigated. All animals received an identical ration, supplemented with molybdenum in one group (M) and molybdenum plus sulphate in another (MS) while the control group (C) received additional copper supplementation. After almost a year on these rations, rams in Group MS produced ejaculates of lower volume, lower sperm concentration, poorer sperm motility and morphology than rams of the other 2 groups. …

Room-Temperature Patterning of Nanoscale MoS2 under an Electron Beam.

Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is traditionally grown at a high temperature and subsequently patterned to study its electronic properties or make devices. This method imposes severe limitations on the shape and size of MoS2 crystals that can be patterned precisely at required positions. Here, we describe a method of direct nanoscale patterning of MoS2 at room temperature by exposing a molybdenum thiocubane single-source precursor to a beam of electrons. Molybdenum thiocubanes with various alkylxanthate moieties [Mo4S4(ROCS2)6, where R = alkyl] were prepared using a "self-assembly" approach. Micro…

Alternative NAD(+)-dependent formate dehydrogenases in the facultative methylotroph Mycobacterium vaccae 10.

Mycobacterium vaccae 10 growing in methanol medium synthesizes two inducible alternative NAD(+)-dependent formate dehydrogenases (FDH). In the presence of molybdenum, the dominating form of the enzyme is FDHI with Mr 440 kDa and Km 0.32 mM for sodium formate. FDHI reduced ferricyanide as well as NAD+, and it was reversibly inactivated by formate. NAD+ stabilized FDHI against this inactivation. Under conditions of artificial molybdenum deficiency (tungsten in the medium), the second enzyme (FDHII) appeared with Mr about 93 kDa and Km 8.3 mM for sodium formate, and no FDHI activity was detected.…

Unveiling full mechanistic picture of Mo-catalysed nitrogen fixation driven by SmI2-H2O system.

Ammonia is an essential chemical that underpins modern agriculture and industry, but the direct conversion of dinitrogen to ammonia under mild conditions remains highly challenging. To this end, molybdenum nitride complexes bearing 1,3-bis(di-tert-butylphosphinomethyl)benzimidazole-2-ylidene pincer ligands have been shown to catalyse ammonia formation from dinitrogen using samarium diiodide and water. However, the catalytic mechanism remains poorly understood owing to limited information on the key intermediates and the solution-state speciation of the samarium reductant. Here we show a full c…
