Extraction pH modulates structural, functional, and antioxidant characteristics of banana (Musa spp.) flower polysaccharides.

Banana flower is an underutilized agricultural by-product and a potential source of functional polysaccharides. In this study, the influence of extraction pH (2-12) on the structural and functional properties of banana flower polysaccharides (BFPs) was evaluated. The extraction yield increased significantly from 7.64% at pH 2 to 14.04% at pH 12. In contrast, acidic and near-neutral conditions better preserved the total sugar content, molecular weight (16.90-18.53 kDa), degree of esterification, galactose, and arabinose-rich regions. Strong alkaline extraction promoted de-esterification, reduct

Genome-wide identification, expression profiling, and functional analysis of sugar transporter family genes in Diaphorina citri.

Sugar transporters (STs) are important proteins responsible for the movement of sugar through the cell membrane and play pivotal roles in the growth, development, and osmoregulation of phloem-feeding hemipterans. However, information about STs in the Asian citrus psyllid (ACP), Diaphorina citri Kuwayama (Hemiptera: Liviidae), remains unknown. In this study, a total of 61 STs were identified according to the genome and transcriptome analysis of D. citri. All the ST genes have complete open reading frames (ORFs), and most of them have 12 transmembrane regions. Chromosome localization and phyloge

Ultrasound-assisted extraction optimization of Ganoderma sinense polysaccharides and comparative structural analysis across six Ganoderma species.

This study optimized ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) of Ganoderma sinense polysaccharides using response surface methodology with a Box-Behnken design. Optimal conditions (47-52 °C, solid-liquid ratio 1:35-1:40, ultrasound time 45-55 min) improved extraction yield at relatively low temperatures compared to conventional hot water extraction (80-100 °C). Comparative analysis of six Ganoderma species (G. sinense, G. lucidum, G. applanatum, G. resinaceum, G. cochlear, and G. hainanesis) revealed substantial interspecies variations in yields (3.86 %-12.15 %), total sugar contents (11.24 %-42.8

The Role of the FODMAP Diet in IBS.

The low FODMAP (fermentable oligosaccharide, disaccharide, monosaccharide, and polyol) diet is a beneficial therapeutic approach for patients with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). However, how the low FODMAP diet works is still not completely understood. These mechanisms encompass not only traditionally known factors such as luminal distension induced by gas and water but also recent evidence on the role of FOMAPs in the modulation of visceral hypersensitivity, increases in intestinal permeability, the induction of microbiota changes, and the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), as we

An overview of the Plasmodium falciparum hexose transporter and its therapeutic interventions.

Despite intense elimination efforts, human malaria, caused by the infection of five Plasmodium species, remains the deadliest parasitic disease in the world. Even worse, with the emergence and spreading of the first-line drug-resistant Plasmodium parasites, therapeutic interventions based on novel plasmodial drug targets are more necessary than ever. Given that the blood-stage parasites primarily rely on glycolysis for their energy supply, blocking glucose uptake, the rate-limiting step of ATP generation, was considered a promising approach to kill these parasites. To achieve this goal, charac

A Low FODMAP Diet Reduces Symptoms in Treated Celiac Patients With Ongoing Symptoms-A Randomized Controlled Trial.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: A gluten-free diet usually leads to mucosal remission in celiac disease, but persistent symptoms are common. A low fermentable oligo-, di-, monosaccharides and polyols (FODMAP) diet is an established treatment for irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). We have assessed the efficacy of a moderately low FODMAP diet on persistent symptoms in treated celiac patients. METHODS: A randomized controlled trial was performed from 2018 to 2019 in 70 adults with biopsy-proven celiac disease. Inclusion criteria were as follows: persistent gastrointestinal symptoms defined by a Gastrointestinal…

The Modification of the Gut Microbiota via Selected Specific Diets in Patients with Crohn's Disease.

Gastrointestinal symptoms in Crohn's disease (CD) are common and affect the quality of life of patients; consequently, a growing number of s … ed elimination diets in CD patients is the low-FODMAP (Fermentable Oligosaccharides, Disaccharides, Monosaccharides, and Polyols) diet. Although many papers show it may reduce abdominal pain, diarrhea, or bloating, it also reduces the intake of prebiotic substances, which can negatively affect the gut microbiota composition, decreasing the abundance of Bifidobact …

The low-FODMAP diet in the management of functional dyspepsia in East and Southeast Asia.

Functional dyspepsia (FD) is a common disorder in East and Southeast Asia where subjects experience post prandial fullness/bloating, early satiety, belching, epigastric pain, and/or burning. A subset of patients with FD experience triggers exclusively related to meals, defined as the post prandial distress syndrome in the Rome IV guidelines. There is significant overlap of symptoms and implicated pathogenic factors with another common functional gastrointestinal disorder, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and in fact, a significant proportion of subjects have FD/IBS overlap. The introduction of t

How many forms of glycogen storage disease type I?

UNLABELLED: Glucose-6-phosphatase is a multicomponent enzymatic system of the endoplasmic reticulum, which catalyses the terminal steps of gluconeogenesis and glycogenolysis by converting glucose-6-phosphate to glucose and inorganic phosphate. Glycogen storage diseases type I (GSD I) are a group of metabolic disorders arising from a defect in a component of this enzymatic system, i.e. the glucose-6-phosphate hydrolase (GSD Ia), the glucose-6-phosphate translocase (GSD Ib) and possibly also the translocases for inorganic phosphate (GSD Ic) or glucose (GSD Id). The genes encoding the glucose-6-p

Carbohydrate and lipid components of hyphae and conidia of human pathogen Fonsecaea pedrosoi.

The carbohydrate and lipid components of mycelium and conidia of Fonsecaea pedrosoi (Brumpt) were analysed by paper, thin-layer and gas-chromatography, mass spectrometry and ultraviolet spectroscopy. Glucose, mannose, galactofuranose, rhamnose and glucosamine were polysaccharide components identified in F. pedrosoi. Significant changes in the carbohydrate pattern occurred during the conversion of mycelium into conidia. Rhamnose was predominant in conidia whereas galactose was prominent in mycelium. Palmitic, stearic, oleic, linoleic, and arachidonic acids were the fatty acids identified in the

Relationship among cell wall composition, stage of growth, and virulence of Nocardia asteroides GUH-2.

The clearance and organ distribution of virulent Nocardia asteroides GUH-2P and the avirulent mutant GUH-2AI at different stages of growth was determined after intravenous inoculation into BALB/c mice. The mutant differed significantly from the parent strain in its ability to survive and grow within the murine host. Since the mutant GUH-2AI had a very different colonial morphology compared with GUH-2P, it was believed that cell surface components might be affected by the mutation that resulted in the loss of virulence. Therefore, cell walls of both GUH-2P and GUH-2AI at different stages of gro

Chemical and structural characterization of hemicellulose from date fruits (Phoenix dactylifera L.).

In this study, we extracted hemicellulose from two date fruit cultivars (soft Barhi and hard Neghal) and investigated their structural, physicochemical, and thermal properties. Alkali solubilized more hemicellulose (45%-47.5%) than DMSO (6%-7%); however, DMSO preserved the feruloyl ester linkages. The monosaccharides constituent of hemicellulose includes xylose (33.1-70.6%), glucose (6.7%-17.2%) uronic acids (5.5%-13.3%), arabinose (3.2%-10.1%), galactose content (4.8%-6.8%), mannose (1.6%-3.6%), and rhamnose (0%-3.1%). The hemicellulose was primarily β-(1 → 4)-linked arabinoxylans with minor …

Re-investigation of the relevant factors affecting quantitative precipitation of wine polysaccharides: A GC-MS and HRSEC-RI characterization study using central composite design and response surface methodology.

Wine polysaccharides are abundant and complex macromolecules that influence wine's colloidal stability and quality. Although several precipitation methods have been proposed for their quantification, optimal conditions for quantitative recovery have not yet been systematically evaluated using central composite design and response surface methodology. In this study, six constitutional monosaccharides were quantified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry to assess the effects of sample concentration, precipitation time, precipitation agent composition and their interactions on wine polysacchar…
