Barrier or breach? Assessing swine housing features for mosquito threats.

Effective mosquito control is critical in swine production to reduce disease transmission and prevent mechanical damage. However, current biosecurity measures on swine premises primarily target microbial pathogens, often overlooking the importance of excluding insects, particularly mosquitoes. While vector-borne disease transmission is the primary concern, mosquito infestations also contribute to mechanical damage, leading to secondary infections, stress-related production losses, and compromised animal welfare. Mitigation efforts aimed at mosquitoes can also have broader benefits by reducing …

Climate Change May Restrict the Predation Efficiency of Mesocyclops aspericornis (Copepoda: Cyclopidae) on Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) Larvae.

(1) Dengue is the most spread mosquito-borne viral disease in the world, and vector control is the only available means to suppress its prevalence, since no effective treatment or vaccine has been developed. A biological control program using copepods that feed on mosquito larvae has been practiced in Vietnam and some other countries, but the application of copepods was not always successful. (2) To understand why the utility of copepods varies, we evaluated the predation efficiency of a copepod species (Mesocyclops aspericornis) on a vector species (Aedes aegypti) by laboratory experiments un

Species-specific environmental drivers of mosquito abundance in a coastal lagoon system of Florida.

Mosquito abundance is strongly influenced by environmental conditions, yet species-specific responses to weather and land-cover variables remain insufficiently quantified in operational mosquito control programs. This study integrates multi-year surveillance data (2021-2024) with environmental predictors to identify drivers of mosquito abundance in a coastal landscape in Indian River County, Florida, USA with analyses focused on Culex nigripalpus, Aedes taeniorhynchus, and Aedes albopictus. Species-specific generalized linear mixed-effects models with a negative binomial distribution were used…

The cost-effectiveness of Wolbachia-based biocontrol interventions for dengue: A scoping review of the available evidence.

BACKGROUND: Dengue incidence has increased sharply worldwide, placing nearly half of the global population at risk. In response, various innovative technologies and interventions, including biocontrol strategies that deploy Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes, are being explored. These can be used to either replace the existing mosquito population with one that is less likely to transmit infection or to suppress the existing mosquito population. We conducted a scoping review of economic evaluations of Wolbachia-based interventions for dengue control, aimed at summarising assumptions and results of e

Eco-friendly dengue control using Toxorhynchites brevipalpis, a natural predator of Aedes aegypti larvae in Burkina Faso.

BACKGROUND: Larvae of elephant mosquitoes, Toxorhynchites spp. (Diptera: Culicidae), are obligate predators of other mosquito larvae and small aquatic organisms. This predatory behaviour offers potential for the biological control of vector mosquitoes in shared breeding habitats. METHODS: This study evaluated the feeding behaviour of Toxorhynchites brevipalpis on Aedes aegypti in relation to sample origin, prey density, prey condition, and the presence of alternative prey species. Laboratory experiments assessed functional responses under varying prey densities, whereas field experiments meas

Biological control strategy with Poecilia reticulata for the reduction of Aedes spp. and Culex sp. in urban stormwater drains: Experience at Universidad del Valle, Cali, Colombia.

INTRODUCTION: Dengue is one of the most significant arboviral diseases in Latin America and the Caribbean, with Aedes aegypti as its primary vector. The elimination of breeding sites is the most effective control strategy; however, the presence of stormwater drains in urban environments poses a challenge. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effectiveness of biological control using Poecilia reticulata in reducing Aedes (Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus) and Culex sp. larvae in urban stormwater drains at Universidad del Valle, Cali, Colombia. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A quasi-experimental study was con

Effects of different X-ray irradiation dosages on Wolbachia trans-infected and uninfected Aedes aegypti mosquitoes.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti is a primary vector of several arboviral diseases, including dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever. Eliminating Ae. aegypti can disrupt virus transmission cycles, thereby reducing the incidence of these diseases. Releasing sterile Ae. aegypti males has been implemented to suppress their natural populations, using three approaches, i.e., ionizing radiation-induced sterilization (Sterile Insect Technique, SIT), Wolbachia-induced cytoplasmic incompatibility (Incompatible Insect Technique, IIT), and a combination of both approaches (SIT/IIT). METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL

Comparison on the quality of sterile Aedes aegypti mosquitoes produced by either radiation-based sterile insect technique or Wolbachia-induced incompatible insect technique.

Novel and alternative vector control approaches using a sterile male-based release to suppress Aedes aegypti mosquito vectors have recently been tested in the field in many countries. These approaches included the sterile insect technique (SIT), incompatible insect technique (IIT), and a combination of both techniques. In this study, we conducted a series of experiments to compare the quality between radiation-based and Wolbachia-induced sterile males in terms of flight ability, sterility, mating competitiveness, survival rate, and longevity. Aedes aegypti mosquitoes irradiated at 50 Gy (SIT)

A large-scale mosquito larviciding in Tanga Region, Tanzania, reduced mosquito densities to varying degrees across malaria transmission risk strata.

In 2019, the Government of Tanzania endorsed a nationwide scale-up of mosquito larviciding. Prior to full implementation, a pilot project was conducted in the Tanga Region from June 2022 to April 2024. The intervention targeted three councils representing high, moderate, and low malaria epidemiological risk strata. Six rounds of larvicide application were conducted, each lasting eight weeks and scheduled according to local rainfall patterns. All mosquito breeding habitats identified by trained community members were treated using Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis and Bacillus sphaericus. Each

CDC light traps underestimate the protective efficacy of an indoor spatial repellent against bites from wild Anopheles arabiensis mosquitoes in Tanzania.

BACKGROUND: Methods for evaluating efficacy of core malaria interventions in experimental and operational settings are well established but gaps exist for spatial repellents (SR). The objective of this study was to compare three different techniques: (1) collection of blood-fed mosquitoes (feeding), (2) human landing catch (HLC), and (3) CDC light trap (CDC-LT) collections for measuring the indoor protective efficacy (PE) of the volatile pyrethroid SR product Mosquito Shield™ METHODS: The PE of Mosquito Shield™ against a wild population of pyrethroid-resistant Anopheles arabiensis mosquitoes w

Field effectiveness of microbial larvicides on mosquito larvae in malaria areas of Botswana and Zimbabwe.

BACKGROUND: The successful control of malaria vectors requires the control of both the larval and adult stages. The adult control methods through indoor residual spraying (IRS) and use of long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) continue to be widely used with some high measure of success. Larval control methods are also being used by a number of National Malaria Control Programmes (NMCPs) with limited understanding of its contribution. Larval control might be needed in some areas to move from malaria control to elimination. This experimental study was conducted to assess the field effectiveness

The impact of predators of mosquito larvae on Wolbachia spreading dynamics.

Dengue fever creates more than 390 million cases worldwide yearly. The most effective way to deal with this mosquito-borne disease is to control the vectors. In this work we consider two weapons, the endosymbiotic bacteria Wolbachia and predators of mosquito larvae, for combating the disease. As Wolbachia-infected mosquitoes are less able to transmit dengue virus, releasing infected mosquitoes to invade wild mosquito populations helps to reduce dengue transmission. Besides this measure, the introduction of predators of mosquito larvae can control mosquito population. To evaluate the impact of

A target product profile for a rapid diagnostic test to monitor mosquito gene drive presence and frequency.

Malaria remains a major global health challenge, with over 263 million cases and nearly 600,000 deaths reported in 2023, the majority in sub-Saharan Africa. While conventional interventions such as insecticide-treated nets, indoor residual spraying and antimalarial drugs have reduced transmission, progress has stalled due to the limitations of these interventions and the emergence of resistance. Gene drive-modified mosquitoes represent a promising, potentially transformative vector control strategy, capable of spreading malaria-refractory traits or suppressing mosquito populations. Successful

Evaluating BG-Sentinel trap setting as an effective surveillance tool for mosquito vectors in the Republic of Cyprus.

Effective surveillance of invasive Aedes mosquitoes, particularly Ae. aegypti and Ae. albopictus, is essential for early detection, risk assessment, and optimization of control strategies such as the Sterile Insect Technique (SIT). Although BG-Sentinel 2 traps are widely used in Europe, their performance under eastern Mediterranean conditions remains insufficiently evaluated. We assessed the attractiveness of BG-Sentinel 2 traps baited with BG-Lure, dry ice (CO2), their combination, and unbaited controls using a Latin square field design in Larnaca and Nicosia, Cyprus. A total of 1,649 mosquit

Estimating the dispersal of the malaria vector Anopheles farauti through a natural ecosystem in north Queensland, Australia using mark release and recapture experiments.

Anopheles farauti (Laveran, 1902) is a major malaria vector in the Southwest Pacific region that is showing behavioural resistance to indoor insecticide-based vector control. This study utilised fluorescent dust-based mark release recapture (MRR) experiments to quantify the dispersal characteristics of An. farauti through a non-village natural ecosystem in tropical north Queensland, Australia. Good quality adult mosquitoes were collected from the field using a Fan Box Traps (FBT), with initial parity dissections of this material showing a daily survival rate of 0.68 during the wet season and 0

Optimizing the impact of a novel spatial repellent on malaria incidence in Western Kenya.

Progress in reducing global malaria incidence has slowed in recent years, demonstrating the need for new vector control tools to complement existing interventions in reaching global malaria control targets. Spatial repellents (SRs) can reduce pathogen transmission by altering the behaviors of Anopheles spp. mosquito vectors. A recent cluster-randomized control trial in western Kenya found that SRs reduced first-time infections by 33.4% in a highly-endemic setting with substantial insecticide resistance and high coverage of insecticide treated nets. We modeled the likely impact of the SR interv

Integration of VectorCam, an AI-Enabled Mosquito Surveillance Tool, Into Uganda's National Malaria Elimination Program: Protocol for a Mixed Methods Hybrid Type III Implementation Study.

BACKGROUND: Malaria remains one of the most significant global health threats, and its control depends on timely, accurate entomological surveillance. In Uganda, routine vector surveillance relies heavily on microscope-based mosquito identification by a limited number of trained entomologists, which can delay reporting. VectorCam is an AI-enabled digital tool to support real-time mosquito identification and can be operated by community health workers, supporting rapid data reporting. After co-designing the implementation package using a human-centered design approach with Uganda's Ministry of

Assessing the impact of intervention strategies on dengue dynamics in Shenzhen, China.

BACKGROUND: A dramatic increase in dengue infections has been observed in recent years, raising concerns regarding the potential further spread of dengue. Shenzhen, a major international port city in China, is typically a non-endemic region; however, it faces persistent risks from imported cases. The resurgence of imported risk has made the identification of effective prevention and control strategies a pressing public health priority for the region. METHODOLOGY: We integrated epidemic, environmental, and intervention data from Shenzhen covering the period from 2015 to 2023. A compartmental m

The costs and logistics of distributing 'forest packs' containing novel vector control tools to forest-exposed populations in Cambodia.

BACKGROUND: Malaria incidence in the Greater Mekong Subregion has been on the decline, and most remaining malaria risk in the region is concentrated among hard-to-reach populations, especially those with exposure to forested areas. New vector control tools focused on outdoor protection in forest settings are needed for these populations. METHODS: The delivery of a 'forest pack' containing a volatile pyrethroid spatial repellent (VPSR), a topical repellent, and pyrethroid treatment of clothing was evaluated in an operational study in Cambodia.
