Endogenous oxytocin response to film scenes of attachment and loss is pronounced in schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: Oxytocin (OXT) is critically involved in the regulation of attachment and interpersonal function. In this study, emotional children's movies were used to stimulate OXT secretion in patients with schizophrenia and healthy controls (HCs). Furthermore, associations of OXT levels with measures of attachment style (Psychosis Attachment Measure), childhood adversity (Childhood Trauma Questionnaire) and symptom severity [Positive and Negative Syndrome Scale (PANSS)] were considered. METHODS: In 35 patients with schizophrenia and 35 matched HCs, radioimmunoassay with sample extraction was

Robin Williams' suicide: a case study.

INTRODUCTION:: The world renowned comedian and four-time Oscar nominated actor Robin Williams died on August 11, 2014. From the outset, the news indicated that his death was believed to be a suicide and this was later confirmed to be true by the autopsy reports. Williams had been suffering from severe depression, which is believed to be the leading contributor to his suicide. In this case study, I will highlight the event of the actor's suicide and the main risk factors along with depression leading to his tragic death. As of the end of 2015, no other case study seemed to have addressed or exp

Position of the hyoid and larynx in people with muscle tension dysphonia.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: To determine whether radiographic measures of hyoid position, laryngeal position, and hyolaryngeal space during phonation were different for people with primary muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) as compared to control participants without voice disorders. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective, quasi-experimental research design. METHODS: Twenty participants, 10 with primary MTD and 10 without voice disorders who were age and sex matched were studied radiographically while producing phonation. Lateral x-ray images were obtained for each participant during three tasks: resting state, s

High Chlamydia and gonorrhea incidence and reinfection among performers in the adult film industry.

BACKGROUND: Adult film industry (AFI) performers engage in unprotected oral, vaginal, and anal sex with multiple partners, increasing the likelihood of acquisition and transmission of human immunodeficiency virus and other sexually transmitted diseases. Current industry practice does not require condom use; instead it relies upon limited testing. We sought to estimate the annual cumulative incidence of chlamydia (CT) and gonorrhea (GC) and assess the rate of reinfection among AFI performers. METHODS: We retrieved all CT and GC cases diagnosed among performers between 2004 and 2008 in Los Ange

Media and risky behaviors.

Liliana Escobar-Chaves and Craig Anderson investigate two important trends among American youth and examine the extent to which the two trends might be related. First, the authors note that U.S. youth are spending increasing amounts of time using electronic media, with the average American youngster now spending one-third of each day with some form of electronic media. Second, the authors demonstrate that American adolescents are engaging in a number of unhealthful behaviors that impose huge societal costs. Escobar-Chaves and Anderson detail the extent of five critical types of adolescent heal

End-tidal pCO2 in blood phobics during viewing of emotion- and disease-related films.

OBJECTIVE: Many patients with blood, injection, and injury (BII) phobia respond to specific stimuli with vasovagal dysregulation and fainting. However, little is known about the role of hyperventilation in the distress of these patients. Hyperventilation, defined by subnormal arterial pCO2 levels, induces anxiety and may promote the development of fainting. We studied end-tidal pCO2 in 12 patients with BII phobia and 14 nonanxious controls during presentation of emotional films. METHOD: Ten film clips were shown, two in each of 5 categories: pleasant, unpleasant, neutral, BII-related (surgery

Pupillary and cardiovascular responses to a video movie in senior human subjects.

The effects of watching video movies on autonomic functions were estimated by measuring changes in pupillary and cardiovascular parameters in 10 senior subjects. The subjects looked at a series of video images (with accompanied sounds) taken during the execution of motor vehicles. The images were rear-projected on a large screen for 15 min. Pupil diameter and parameters of the light reflex were measured by an infrared pupillometer before and after the video presentation. Their electrocardiograms (ECG) and blood pressure were measured continuously. Subjects were divided into two groups dependin

Electromyographic analysis of the hip and knee during the golf swing.

As golf increases in popularity, more golfers seek the proper mechanics necessary for the perfect golf swing. Surprisingly little scientific work has been published on the contribution of the hip and knee muscles during the golf swing even though most professionals have recognized their vital contribution. Recent studies have described the electromyographic (EMG) muscle activity of the shoulder, back, and trunk during the golf swing. The purpose of this study was to describe the electrical muscle activity in seven hip and knee muscles of both the left (lead) and right (trail) leg in competitiv

Quantification of left to right atrial shunts with velocity-encoded cine nuclear magnetic resonance imaging.

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the ability of velocity-encoded nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) imaging to quantify left to right intracardiac shunts in patients with an atrial septal defect. BACKGROUND: Quantification of intracardiac shunts is clinically important in planning therapy. METHODS: Velocity-encoded NMR imaging was used to quantify stroke flow in the aorta and in the main pulmonary artery in a group of patients who were known to have an increased pulmonary to systemic flow ratio (Qp/Qs). The velocity-encoded NMR flow data were used to calculate Qp/Qs, and t

Unexpected systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve-related hypoxemia during transurethral resection of the prostate under spinal anesthesia: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Dynamic obstruction of the left ventricular outflow tract resulting from systolic anterior motion of the mitral valve can be an unexpected cause of acute and severe perioperative hypotension in noncardiac surgery. We report a patient undergoing spinal anesthesia for transurethral resection of the prostate who experienced sudden hypoxemia caused by systolic anterior motion-induced mitral regurgitation but with a clinically picture simulating fluid overload. CASE PRESENTATION: An 83-year-old man with a history of hypertension was scheduled for transurethral resection of the prostate

Evaluation of the Airway Space After Distalization in Adults Using the Carrière Motion Appliance: A Cone-Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) Study.

BACKGROUND: Distalization can be done with either intraoral (IO) or extraoral (EO) appliances and is one of the most prevalent methods for correcting class II molars. In recent decades, it has become more pervasive to treat class II malocclusions without taking teeth out. Persons with a neutro-basal jaw base relationship should distalize their teeth to make the dental arch wider in order to prevent the need to remove permanent teeth. The purpose of this investigation was to apply cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to examine how airway space changes in response to varying degrees of distaliz

[Hemodynamic and electrophysiologic changes in hypertrophic cardiomyopathy].

Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy is characterized by abnormalities of the myocardium, and the activation and conduction tissues, that may have separate manifestations, but often occur together in complex clinical pictures. The subaortic gradient, although not always present, is the most classical manifestation of the disease, with its typical dynamic behavior, changing with preload, afterload and contractility. In most cases it is due to systolic motion of the mitral valve against the septum in systole, but in a few it is caused by midventricular "constriction". Alteration of diastolic ventricular

The movement-induced self-reference effect: enhancing memorability through movement toward the self.

Much evidence suggests that bodily actions affect cognitive states. In particular, pulling owned objects toward the self improves memory for those objects compared to memory for objects pushed away from the self. Experiments 1 and 2 examined the effect of incidental joystick movement on static stimuli, hypothesizing that using the physical self (rather than a computer monitor) as a reference point would enhance memory for items categorized via a toward-the-self action but not toward-the-computer-monitor action. Experiment 3 examined whether movement toward an external representation of self, o

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy in central cord syndrome: case report and review of the literature.

Reflex sympathetic dystrophy (RSD) has been reported in incomplete spinal cord injury patients, most often occurring unilaterally; however to our knowledge, bilateral RSD has not been reported in patients with a central cord syndrome. We report a case of bilateral RSD in a patient with incomplete cervical myelopathy and the clinical picture of central cord syndrome. Diagnosis of RSD was based upon clinical, roentgenographic and scintigraphic findings. Management of RSD included elevation of forearm and hands, gentle active and passive range of movements of all upper extremity joints and system

Posterolateral Disc Prolapse in Flexion Initiated by Lateral Inner Annular Failure: An Investigation of the Herniation Pathway.

STUDY DESIGN: Structural investigation of mechanically induced herniations in ovine lumbar motion segments. OBJECTIVE: This new study addresses the question of whether there are regions other than the posterior and posterolateral aspects that are implicated in the initiation of disc disruption and herniation. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Flexion in combination with compressive loading will induce disc herniations in healthy motion segments in vitro. Although it is widely accepted that the posterior and posterolateral regions of the disc are the primary sites of herniation much less is known a
