[Subjective difficulties in young people related to extensive loud music listening].

INTRODUCTION: For human ear, noise represents every undesirable and valueless sound. In disco clubs, as in some other places with loud music mostly attended by young people, the level of noise sometimes attains over 100 dB. As reported by numerous studies, a high noise level could induce subjective difficulties (ear buzzing, audition loss, vertigo and palpitations, anxiety, high blood pressure, decreased concentration, lowered memory storing). OBJECTIVE: Assessment of subjective difficulties occurring in young people when staying in places with a high noise level (cafes, disco clubs, rock con…

Music tuned to 432 Hz versus music tuned to 440 Hz for improving sleep in patients with spinal cord injuries: a double-blind cross-over pilot study.

BACKGROUND AND AIM OF THE WORK: Among people with spinal cord injuries, sleep disorders are considered one of the top well-being priorities. Some studies suggest that listening to music promotes sleep and improves its quality. These studies usually used music standardised at the frequency of 440 Hz. The aim of the present study is to compare the effects of listening to music tuned to 440 Hz and music tuned to 432 Hz on sleep in patients with spinal cord injuries. METHODS: Double-blind cross-over pilot study in a single Italian Spinal Unit. 12 patients with spinal injuries were provided with m…

Growing into the groove: Developmental changes in the pleasurable urge to move to music.

Groove - the pleasurable urge to move to music - provides a behavioral index of how perceptual, motor, and reward systems are engaged and coupled by rhythm. Although groove has been widely studied in adults, little is known about its developmental trajectory. We examined how groove evolves across early to mid-adolescence using a cross-sectional (N = 290) and longitudinal design (N = 105). Participants aged 11-15 rated their urge to move to music stimuli varying in low, moderate, and high levels of rhythmic and harmonic complexity. Across both studies, groove showed the well-established inverte…

Interpersonal heart rate synchrony and prosocial behaviors in musical contexts.

The interpersonal synchronization of physiological signals has been a major target of cognitive science studies, mainly because it is associated with pro-social behaviors. In this context, naturalistic stimuli are often used to evaluate this effect, using neuroimaging techniques. However, it is also possible to observe synchronizing effects at the cardiac level, which may also reflect cognitive processing. The main goal of this mini-review is to achieve a better understanding of interpersonal heart rate synchronization and pro-social behaviors in musical contexts. We conclude that music has th…

The Harmonious Dance: A Narrative Review on Psychedelics and Music in Therapeutic Settings.

The integration of psychedelics and music in therapeutic settings is gaining recognition for its potential to enhance mental health outcomes. This review synthesizes current evidence on the neurobiological mechanisms underlying this synergy, focusing on receptor-level pathways (e.g., 5-HT2A receptor agonism, BDNF-TrkB signaling) and neural circuit dynamics (e.g., default mode network desynchronization, thalamo-cortical connectivity) that mediate psychedelic action and mu-sic-induced emotional processing. By examining how music, acting as a "hidden therapist," ampli-fies the emotional and cogni…

Music Therapists' Training and Education on Suicide Prevention in the United States.

Suicide is a significant public health concern and a leading cause of death for individuals across the lifespan. This study explored (a) what settings music therapists are working in to support individuals navigating suicidality; (b) their training and education on suicide prevention; and (c) how prepared, knowledgeable, and comfortable they feel implementing suicide-related care. Using a convergent mixed methods design, 458 credentialed music therapists working in the United States completed a survey, 19 of whom worked with people navigating suicidality and completed a qualitative interview. …

Music and hypnosis for well-being in retirement homes: A pilot study.

Anxiety, pain and poor well-being are major issues in elderly individuals. Complementary interventions, such as music and hypnosis, are increasingly used to address these issues. The objectives of this study were to assess immediate changes in anxiety, pain and well-being during personalized prerecorded music and hypnosis interventions compared to control sessions, and to explore participants' subjective experiences. We employed a multiple time series model with daily measurements with older people living in retirement homes in rural areas (n = 8). The Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) …

To Calm and to Commend: Veterans' Musical Preferences Anticipating End of Life.

INTRODUCTION: Since World War 1, physicians have noted the calming effects of music for military personnel experiencing "shell shock," Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), or stress. Researchers have documented that stress or PTSD-like symptoms re-emerge for veterans at the end of life, triggered by hospital-like settings, co-occurring conditions, and debilitation. Dying veterans also face integration of their service and combat experiences into summations of their lives. In response, there has been a national movement for bedside ceremonies, often with music, to honor veterans. MATERIALS A…

Development and Validation of an Efficient and Safe Loud Music Exposure Paradigm.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to develop a time-efficient music exposure and testing paradigm that safely creates temporary cochlear dysfunction that could be used in future temporary threshold shift (TTS) studies. METHOD: A 30-min audio compilation of pop rock music tracks was created. Adult volunteers with normal hearing were then exposed to this music material monaurally through headphones for 30 min at 97 dBA or 15 min at 100 dBA. Levels were measured from the ear of a manikin and are considered to provide an equivalent daily noise dose based on a 3-dB exchange. We assessed the c…

The shared genetic architecture and evolution of human language and musical rhythm.

This study aimed to test theoretical predictions over biological underpinnings of previously documented phenotypic correlations between human language-related and musical rhythm traits. Here, after identifying significant genetic correlations between rhythm, dyslexia and various language-related traits, we adapted multivariate methods to capture genetic signals common to genome-wide association studies of rhythm (N = 606,825) and dyslexia (N = 1,138,870). The results revealed 16 pleiotropic loci (P < 5 × 10-8) jointly associated with rhythm impairment and dyslexia, and intricate shared genetic…

Music in Parkinson's Disease Rehabilitation: Are We Heading in the Right Direction?

Music is an auditory stimulus of a complex nature, as many perceptive processes develop simultaneously in various areas of the brain. The same brain areas are involved in processing music and movement rhythms, which is why music can be used in the rehabilitation of movement disorders. There is growing evidence that music-assisted treadmill training can be effective in treating Parkinson's disease (PD) gait disorders, as auditory cueing with treadmill training may specifically work on those motor areas, including the cerebellum, that are not affected by the disease. Thus, music-therapy, when pr…

Critical behavior and the Kibble-Zurek mechanism in a musical phase transition.

We investigate the critical phenomena emerging from a statistical mechanics model of musical harmony on a three-dimensional (3D) lattice, and the resulting structure of the ordered phase. In this model, each lattice site represents a tone, with nearest neighbors interacting via the perception of dissonance between them. With dissonance assumed to be an octave-wise periodic function of pitch difference, this model is a 3D XY system with the same symmetry and dimensionality as superfluid helium and models of the cosmological axion field. We use numerical simulation to observe a phase transition …

Where words are powerless to express: Use of music in paediatric neurology.

Music is an art form that strongly affects people and can elicit many different emotions at the same time, including happiness, anxiety, sadness, and even ecstasy. What is it about music that causes such a strong reaction from each of us? Music engages many senses, which in turn can produce a multiplicity of responses and help create more extensive neuronal connections, as well as influence behaviour through structural and functional changes in the brain. Music-based interventions as a therapeutic tool in rehabilitation are becoming more common. It is said that the impact of music on the human…

Musical and vocal interventions to improve neurodevelopmental outcomes for preterm infants.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth interferes with brain maturation, and subsequent clinical events and interventions may have additional deleterious effects. Music as therapy is offered increasingly in neonatal intensive care units aiming to improve health outcomes and quality of life for both preterm infants and the well-being of their parents. Systematic reviews of mixed methodological quality have demonstrated ambiguous results for the efficacy of various types of auditory stimulation of preterm infants. A more comprehensive and rigorous systematic review is needed to address controversies arising …

Effects of Music Intervention on Stress in Concussed and Non-Concussed Athletes.

Sport-related concussion is a serious public health issue affecting millions of individuals each year. Among the many negative side effects, emotional symptoms, such as stress, are some of the most common. Stress management is repeatedly cited by expert groups as an important intervention for this population. It was shown that music has relaxing effects, reducing stress through the activation of brain areas involved in emotions and pleasure. The objective of this study was to explore the effects of a music-listening intervention compared with silence on experimentally induced stress in concuss…
