Two patients are described with acute streptococcal myositis. One of them died after a brief duration of illness in multiple organ failure; the other survived extensive muscular damage complicated by diffuse intravascular coagulation, acute renal failure, adult respiratory distress syndrome, bronchopneumonia, Pseudomonas septicaemia and probably streptococcal toxic shock syndrome. Both patients received nonsteroidal antiphlogistics, purportedly involved in the pathogenesis of this syndrome. Based on a mouse model, clindamycin would seem to be the antibiotic of choice.

We present a morphological and ultrastructural study from one case of orbitary myositis in a 35 years old male patient with asymmetrical localytation and clinical behaviour as a tumor. The morphological study shows a chronic inflammatory lesion which causes atrophy and necrosis of the muscular tissue. Myositis ossificans traumatica (MOT) is often encountered by young male athletes participating in contact sports. A patient presented with fever of undetermined cause for two months. On physical examination, bilateral calf tenderness was elicited, prompting a diagnostic muscle biopsy for polyarteritis. This limited form of polyarteritis is reviewed in the context of this case and previously reported cases. Polyarteritis limited to muscle seems to have a good prognosis and responds readily to steroids alone.

Myositis ossificans traumatica, although it is one of a number of heterotopic bone formation entities, is a specific lesion with a clearly recognized etiology and natural evolutionary pattern. Early conservative treatment with rest, elevation, and immobilization minimizes additional trauma and decreases the likelihood of incapacitating bone formation. Subsequently, active range of motion exercises progressing to resistive exercises usually effect a satisfactory recovery and return to full athletic participation. A man aged 59 years developed a rapidly progressive muscular weakness which within a few weeks involved almost the entire musculature. A carcinoma of the stomach was discovered at necropsy. The skeletal muscles showed widespread necrosis with minimal inflammatory reaction. The findings are compared with those in a woman of 51 with Hashimoto's thyroiditis who developed a slowly progressive weakness of her trunk muscles which after some months began to involve the limbs.
