Diffusion weighted imaging of nasopharyngeal adenoid hypertrophy.

BACKGROUND: Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) could be helpful for the differentiation of malignant and benign entities. Nasopharyngeal adenoid hypertrophy (NAH) is a typical benign lesion. DWI appearances of this lesion have not been reported previously. PURPOSE: To identify and to analyse DWI findings of NAH. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We analyzed 688 MR investigations of the head performed at our institution. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was obtained at a 1.5 T MRI device. Beside normal standard sequences DWI was obtained using a multislice single-shot echo-planar sequence. DWI was performe

Radiotherapeutic treatment of a fighter pilot with nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy is the standard and most effective treatment for nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) in its early stages. However, its application in fighter pilots returning to flying duties with NPC has not been previously reported, presumably due to post-radiotherapeutic complications. CASE REPORT: A 36-yr-old male fighter pilot had a painless mass in the left neck for 5 mo. Pathological diagnosis demonstrated nonkeratinizing squamous cell carcinoma in the left nasopharynx which had metastasized to lymph nodes in the left side of the neck. He was diagnosed and staged with NPC (T1N2M0)

FDG PET/CT in the management of nasopharyngeal carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: FDG PET/CT has a growing role in the diagnosis and management of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). FDG PET has greater efficacy for N and M staging than other modalities, which enables the treating oncologists to select the appropriate mode of treatment. FDG PET/CT helps in radiation therapy planning, provides valuable prognostic information, and is useful in the assessment of therapy response and in follow-up to detect recurrences. CONCLUSION: FDG PET/CT is a valuable imaging test in the management of NPC.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma incidence and mortality in China in 2010.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is common in South China. Although regional epidemiological data on NPC in China is available, national epidemiological data have been unavailable up to now. The goal of this study was to analyze the NPC incidence and mortality data in some domestic cancer registries, estimate these rates in China in 2010, and provide scientific information that can be harnessed for NPC control and prevention. To accomplish this goal, NPC incidence and mortality data for 2010 were collected from 145 Chinese cancer registries from which data were included in the 2013 National Canc

Extensive nasopharyngeal angiofibromas: the maxillary swing approach.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and outcome using the maxillary swing approach for the management of extensive nasopharyngeal angiofibromas. A retrospective analysis in a tertiary care center revealed five cases with extensive nasal angiofibromas operated using the maxillary swing approach between 2010 and 2012. All patients had tumor extension to the lateral-most portions of the infratemporal fossa with complete occupation and destruction of the lateral wall of the sphenoid sinus causing abutment to the cavernous sinus and complete involvement of the pterygopalatine f

Nasopharyngeal tonsils (adenoids) contain extrathymic corticothymocytes.

Adenoidal tissue (also known as nasopharyngeal tonsils) of 58% of humans in the pediatric age group contains immature T-lymphoid cells with the phenotype of thymocytes (TdT+, CD1abc+, cytoplasmic CD3+, coexpressing CD4 and CD8, lacking an Intraepithelial Lymphocyte-associated phenotype). The notable difference in comparison to palatine tonsils is the clustering in groups and sheets, comprising hundreds or thousands of cells (1.7%±0.2 of total T cells). The thymic epithelium is morphologically and phenotypically absent. Adenoids share with tonsils and lymph nodes the presence of immature B cell

Chordoma of skull base presenting as nasopharyngeal mass.

While the nasopharynx is most commonly regarded by the otolaryngologist as a primary site of neoplastic involvement, it is also an avenue of spread of base-of-the-skull tumors presenting as bulging nasopharyngeal masses. Chordoma is a relatively rare tumor of the skull base and sacrum thought to originate from embryonic remnants of the notochord. Chordomas arising from the skull base/clivus are typically locally aggressive with lytic bone destruction. The optimal treatment may be photon/proton radiotherapy alone or combined with a gross total resection, when feasible. We report a case of intra

The morphology of the nasopharyngeal inlet in obstructive sleep apnea.

Routine flexible optic laryngoscopy (FOL) can visualize the airway from the nasopharynx to the hypopharynx in obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). With the tip of a flexible endoscope at the nasopharyngeal inlet (NPI), we can visualize the morphology of this area. We evaluated the effect of NPI morphology on OSA severity. Videos were obtained during FOL examinations of the NPI in 83 patients (11 females, 72 males; mean age 42.1 ± 9.5 years) and NPI morphology was examined. Two main morphologies were seen: wide and narrow. The narrow NPI group (n = 45) was further subdivided into kidney-shaped (n = 3

Use of nasopharyngeal aspirate for diagnosis of pneumocystis pneumonia.

Quantitative PCR on nasopharyngeal aspirate (NPA) can achieve high sensitivity and specificity in diagnosing Pneumocystis pneumonia (PCP) compared to microscopic examination of bronchoscopic specimens in a population with low HIV prevalence. Since NPA is a minimally invasive procedure, it is ideal as a screening test for PCP.

Nasopharyngeal microbiota in infants with acute otitis media.

BACKGROUND: Interspecies interactions of the nasopharyngeal microbiota are likely to be involved in the pathogenesis of acute otitis media (AOM). Capturing the breadth of microbial interactions requires a detailed description of the microbiota during health and AOM. METHODS: The nasopharyngeal microbiota of 163 infants with (n = 153) or without (n = 10) AOM was characterized using nasopharyngeal swabs and multiplexed pyrosequencing of 16S rRNA. Nasopharyngeal swab specimens were collected during 4 winter seasons from 2004 through 2010 for infants with AOM and during 2010 for controls. RESULT

Nasopharyngeal disease in cats: 1. Diagnostic investigation.

PRACTICAL RELEVANCE: Nasal discharge, sneezing and upper respiratory noise are frequent presenting signs in feline practice. CLINICAL CHALLENGES: The small nasal cavity of the cat can make visualisation of lesions challenging. In addition, investigations may identify only secondary complications of a disease process, rather than the initial aetiological agent. GLOBAL IMPORTANCE: Nasopharyngeal disease is a worldwide problem. However, fungal disease shows regional variations in prevalence. AUDIENCE: This review, aimed at general practitioners as well as those undertaking more specialist inve

The impact of smoking on oral and nasopharyngeal bacterial flora.

Exposure to direct and passive tobacco smoking has significant impact on the gingival and oropharyngeal flora. The effects of exposure to smoking are evident in both children as well as adults. It increases the acquisition of periodontal pathogens and periodontal disease, colonization by respiratory pathogens, and the occurrence of upper respiratory tract infections, including otitis media. The flora of smokers contains fewer aerobic and anaerobic organisms with interfering activity against bacterial pathogens and harbors more potential pathogens as compared with the flora of non-smokers. The

Current treatment options for recurrent nasopharyngeal cancer.

Loco-regional control rate of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) has improved significantly in the past decade. However, local recurrence still represents a major cause of mortality and morbidity in advanced stages, and management of local failure remains a challenging issue in NPC. The best salvage treatment for local recurrent NPC remains to be determined. The options include brachytherapy, external radiotherapy, stereotactic radiosurgery, and nasopharyngectomy, either alone or in different combinations. In this article we will discuss the different options for salvage of locally recurrent NPC.
